The Rise of the Overzealous Traffic Warden
While fully appreciating the need for parking restrictions, today while in Ashton I noticed a lot of traffic wardens who seemed very eager to ticket vehicles - are they on a commission? The short term financial benefits from rigorously enforcing parking restrictions can easily result in a long term loss if motorists decide to shop out of town at places like the Trafford Centre where parking is free and where there is no chance of getting a ticket.
On a positive note; Ashton was bustling and it was good to see lots of activity. Last time I visited it had a depressing feel to it, however today the shops seemed busy and people seemed happy - except for the guy in the silver BMW X5 who got a parking ticket near the market and who was kicking off big time. I reckon the crane driver would have been less than impressed when he finished talking to the site foreman and discovered he had a parking ticket too.
