I’m with Edith on this one

I was walking along the disused railway from Stalybridge to Mossley, the route of which passes directly behind Staley Hall on Friday. It was sad to see how this part of the borough is being totally overwhelmed by new housing developments. Enough is enough - halt the proliferation of house building and protect the green spaces we still have!

If you know this area click on the images to enlarge and you will recognise places which were until relatively recently green pasture but which are now occupied by hundreds of shoebox style homes - and the building appears to be carrying on unabated.

Two words. White flight. An easy touch Council and the 'enrichment' of surrounding areas by the New Labour government has led to large parts of Tameside, an increasing number of them green space, being turned into housing estates. This should be stopped. Overpopulation is NOT economic prosperity.

'Council officers have recommended approval for the scheme'. Just like they do for virtually every other in the Borough. I wonder why.

Because the rights of the existing residents count for f**k all.

One Britain, when thinking about this vandalism to our countryside always remember the No1 master criminal behind the plot to erase the countryside and replace it with bricks, mortar and concrete. And yes, he is a disgusting oafish Labourite!

I'd love to see these beautiful buildings maintained as they were intended as single residences, but the state of the building shows how unrealistic that is (i) in today's market and (ii) in this part of the world.

If the building can be saved by converting it into (even small) apartments, then that is better than it being lost. I'm not well versed with the extent of the planned development around the hall, but the story just refers to developing the barns which sounds OK.

If Edith would like to see it kept as a single residence, she is (or was) free to put together a consortium to raise the funds and so the work. I imagine that would have been impractical hence the scheme to split it into many units.

The Grade II* listing SHOULD ensure the character of building is maintained. However, alot of this responsibility is shared with TMBC and their 'listing officer' and 'tree officer' who don't have a great track record in ensuring all the rules are complied with. Fingers crossed they do a better job here.

I never thought about it like that. What does Basil have to say on these proposals?

KY and the team pledge to restore the hall to its former glory and abandon plans to build homes on the site. A vote for KY means no more building on sites of historical or cultural importance.
