I am saddened to see the destruction of this famous Hyde landmark. I am sure we all have bitter memories of the betrayal of the Hyde workers when Gallagher’s were persuaded to re-locate to Ireland as a ‘sweetener’ during the Northern Ireland peace process. On a happier note I recall as a ‘yoof’ we used to sit in a car on our CB radios (when they were cool and not geeky) on the hill at Werneth Low looking out across Tameside and what was Tameside’s most outstanding night time landmark? The factory now being demolished which was totally un-missable because of the huge blue florescent lettering on top of the factory which read SENIOR SERVICE - very sad!

Is that to make way for a Mosque? you never know these days.
I always knew the holier than thou TC was a xenophobic enviro-racist and this proves it!
It must be true if it's in the Telegraph.
Goodnight.
No, it's almost certainly to make way for more housing, this in the middle of a recession and mega-slump in the housing market. This is caused by more people wanting to move to Tameside from the increasingly heavily 'enriched' and ever more overcrowded surrounding areas. Go to Gorton, large parts of Oldham, Longsight etc etc etc if you want to see the truth. White flight is a reality denied by cowards and the wilfully blind.
Just what we need, MORE houses/traffic/congestion (and of course Council Tax) in the Duki/Newton/Hyde area. It's only five minutes since that massive estate was built on ICI.
Gorton. Do you mean New Lagos?
Open your eyes to the benefits of diversity you blinkered morons. We have been in Rusholme tonight celebrating Eid. It was a vibrant fusion of diverse cultures uniting in a celebration of multicultural harmony. What an exciting change compared to this drab monocultural graveyard.
SAVE OUT HERITAGE
SAVE OUR HERITAGE
A life past gone why?

"I am left wondering whether this is a crude bribe by the Government to buy the Ulster Unionists' vote in its desperate attempts to cling on to power. I am struck by the coincidence that the news of this closure comes at the same time as the Government has given pounds 10m to Northern Ireland to help make this switch."

STD, If you're not Muslim why would you want to celebrate Eid? They don't celebrate Christianity and are becoming increasingly divorced from British values as their numbers swell exponentially, a pattern that has been repeated for thirteen centuries globally. The monoculturalism you profess to hate is exactly what this country is headed towards on present Islamic birthrates, which outstrip all other groups by ten to one.
The ones wearing blinkers are you and your ilk who use tolerance as a mask to disguise a combination of pure fascism that can brook no dissenting opinions, and fear of Islam. As a woman you should be utterly ashamed of promoting a culture that treats your sex as property and second class citizens. Domestic abuse is epidemic, daily and 'normal' for this alien, violent cult.
Good bye fag factory, lets have some good detached houses we can afford.
Roy Oldham was correct in his analysis. Tameside will lose when Roy retires.
Roof over my head, stupid c**t.
We are ordinary people who are tired of the Lib/Lab/Con-sensus being imposed upon us by the 3 old parties and their friends in the media. We believe that a vote for any of the big three parties is a vote for more of the same. Both nationally and in Tameside. All of them have the same views and policies and differ only in minor detail.
But I do a bit of work for Searchlight when the elections are in full swing.
Did anyone else see the Labour mob out in Dukinfield today, where do they get all those people from all over King street and the flats leafleting with the anti BNP leaflet.
I know some of them from the recent by- elections at least six of the are UAF members.
well done tameside another little bit of hydes heritage gone forever, all you need to do now is get rid of the football club and onward theatre like you did with the old baths and hyde lads club put car parks in their place build a bigger mosque then your job is done.
NewLabour/UAF/Islam, three forces gradually joining together to destroy Britain.
Labour sold out to Blair the conman in 1994 so selling our nation down the river to Islam and the EU is second nature. When a Party has no centre, identity or purpose, survival at any cost becomes the reason for its existence.
Good riddance. We want to promote a healthy borough and smoking doesn't play a part in it. It maybe fine for the likes of Oldham, Pendry and Warringon who receive backhanders from the tobacco industry to defend the trade in one way or another.
The site is now occupied by a large office for Findel Education which employs skilled staff.
Roy Oldham with his comment about the Conservative government doing anything to cling on to power isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? No one can deny what John Major did for the Northern Ireland peace process. I doubt he did it to win votes, but more on principle. That's more than what can be said for the likes of the Labour party with Cllr. Oldham and Gordon Brown.
TE makes a valid point about cigarettes being bad for you and hence this demolition is no big loss. This fine mill was an outstanding example of an early 20th century cotton mill. When it was built it was state of the art and as we can see from the photograph it stood the test of time and appeared to have been in excellent condition prior to the demolition work commencing.
The demolition of this manufacturing site, just like that which will be happening at the BAE site in Woodford soon is down to ludicrous policies which allow our manufacturing centres to be asset stripped so the land can be sold off to developers to build homes for the ‘white flight’ people escaping the cities from the never ending tidal wave of immigration.
Tory MEPs Vote for ex-Communist Party Man as EU Head.
The Conservative Party has once again betrayed all of its principles and supporters by voting for the re-election of José Manuel Durão Barroso as European Commission president — even though he was a card-carrying member of the Portuguese Communist Party as late as 1980.
Mr Barroso received a standing ovation from many Conservative MEPs when the result of the recent vote — which saw him elected by 382 of the 718 members of the EU parliament in Strasbourg — was announced.
It is idiotic to demolish this mill. It would have made an excelllent workhouse for those who will need such institutions in the very near future.
Cigarettes are a legal product and used to be an extremely profitable export product for the UK economy. British American Tobacco's last British factory closed in Southampton in 2006 with the loss of 600 jobs. This wasn't simply economics but a result of pressure from the anti-smoking zealots in Britain and Europe.
Gallahers, who owned the Hyde factory relocated all their production to N.Ireland where they still employ 1200 people in a highly automated factory. Ask the unemployed of Tameside if they'd like those jobs transferred back before indulging in moralising about the legal use of a legal product.
The workhouse should be brought back and the welfare witches and their genetically inferior offspring should be made to work for their money and the benefit of the country.
Tameside No Eyes, read the post about the Workfirst Initiative. People need jobs and demonising the production of cigarettes is infantile moralising typical of the NewFascist thinking so prevalent in the corridors of power.
I worked in the Hyde Factory my job was to oversee the loading of the machines, took me two days to learn how to do it.
My annual salary was £42,000 with overtime and that was ten years ago, skilled personnel on site earned even more, when I left I received a cheque for £52,000 I now earn £17,000 per year if I do overtime good job I paid my mortgage up.
Wish we still had it and I was still there, without a pay rise for ten years my income would still be fantastic for the work I did.
The BNP will repeal the smoking ban in pubs and replace it with a licensing system for smoking and non-smoking pubs so people will have FREEDOM OF CHOICE.
The BNP will never have power to do this so get use to smoke free pubs if we have any left.
There 42 pubs up for sale in Tameside many of them will never be sold, its last orders for many of them.
Don't blame the smoking ban or the price of a pint, peoples habits change and many younger people do not want the traditional pub life many older people have realised that drinking every day is not good for your health.
We had far to many pubs market forces are now in full swing the weak will fall down and disappear, the strong and imaginative landlords will prosper that's life get use to it.
People's habits do change but many pubs which would have survived have been killed off directly as a result of the smoking ban. Ask landlords how much their trade dropped off in the following few months.
The solution is fair, easy and obvious; pubs could be smoking or non-smoking as they are in many parts of Spain which, last time I looked was in the EU. Unfortunately NewLabour and Mr Blair's desire to appease the EU made it easy for the moralising, anti-smoking fascists to destroy the livelihoods of massive numbers of people who worked in the pub trade.
The sooner the British people are given the referendum on the European Constitution/Lisbon Treaty they were promised by our lying, thieving government the sooner we can pull out.
In Portugal you are allowed to smoke in bars that are less than 100sq m. If you don't want a smoky atmosphere you don't go in. Simple, fair and down to individual choice, one of the basic tenets of a free and fair society, i.e. the way Britain used to be.

Criminals first, then the traitors and lying, thieving scum that infest Westminster.
I'm sick and tired of hearing people say cigarettes are bad for you. My uncle smoked 100 a day and lived to the ripe old age of 31.
I asked three different GPs and they all said moderate smoking carries moderate risk. The real health timebomb in this country is obesity caused by sloth and unbridled gluttony. The anti-smoking fascists couldn't care less about people's health, it's just another form of control freakery.
Re passive smoking: 23 international studies established it carried no measurable risk as the smoke has to be inhaled deep into the lungs for there to be potential long term damage. 1 concluded that excessive exposure to smoky environments posed a minor risk. Guess which one the EU based its' decision on. This has nothing to do with health and everything to do with the State trying to increase its power over the individual. Cannabis and other drugs on the other hand are practically encouraged as they desrot the will.
