When walking through the deep cutting between Stalybridge and Mottram this afternoon I noticed a number of small a-boards like the one pictured above. Soon after I encountered four or five young men all resplendent in yellow high-viz vests. They appeared have been given a task to pick weeds from the cutting wall close to the famous frog in the wall. They had no ladders or any kind of hydraulic platform and could only get the weeds which they could reach by standing on their tiptoes. At first I thought it was some kind of community service but when I looked online I discovered it was part of Tameside Councils Workfirst initiative. I was not aware of this project until today but it seems like a good idea providing the jobs created and secured are worthwhile jobs.

Just what we need in Tameside maybe he will take him along to his home where there is a disabled person.

TC, Israel, while far from perfect is at least a democracy in a part of the world where they are virtually non-existent. Israel destroyed an Iranian reactor project in the 1980's and a site in Syria 'disappeard' overnight off satellite images two years ago.
Israel's possession of nuclear weapons is therefore defensive and necessary given their unique situation. The prospect of an Islamic religious dictatorship, run by a man who appears to be insane, in possession of such destructive power is a totally different matter. The American led western reaction, has been so strong as much because they fear what Iran might do in the name of Islam as because they KNOW what Israel will do if threatened or if the Iranians are not stopped.

When I worked for this Jewish guy in Ancoats Manchester in the early 80's, he had the whole of his work force working for Thatcher's £23 pound 50p a week. The private sector should be allowed to sustain itself without public intervention. If the banks were allowed to fall for making stupid decisions as they did, smaller building societies which make sound decisions would now be flourishing and the greedy bankers awarding themselves large bonuses would be drawing JSA.
