Reason for no death penalty, Knox was found guilty the first time, I wonder if you felt the need to trumpet that. Some of the handling of the DNA evidence wasn't done to textbook standard, and other minor details were, as is the usual tactic in such cases, blown out of all proportion by her very expensive defence team. This, plus the massive media interest, generated by her looks and the vile details of the case, have got her and Sollecito off at this second trial. No explanation of course from the 'Knox camp' as to why she implicated an innocent black man. Guede, the only person ever convicted, is also black. Or all the other inconsistencies in her original police interviews. Or why Sollecito said he was on his computer in his own flat at the time of the murder but it was unused all night. Most tellingly, there is strong evidence the break-in was fake, including the fact that nothing was stolen in the broken-in room. Why would the one person convicted, Rudy Guede, bother to fake a break-in and then go on the run when he knew his DNA was all over the murder scene, including inside Meredith Kercher. He pleaded guilty when apprehended. The only reason to fake a burglary would be to make it look as if an outsider, i.e not someone who lived in the flat or had access or keys to it, had broken in and attacked Meredith. Knox was her flatmate. In my view the culprit is the Italian justice system which convicted Rudy Guede but failed to convict the other people involved in the killing of Meredith Kercher. There is one more prosecution appeal pending, so still a chance that justice will be done. Unfortunately the death penalty is currently unavailable in Italy and Mr Guede, for one, will be walking the streets in less than ten years. You can celebrate that.

The last few comments remind me of a book I read back in 1999, Hanratty: The Final Verdict. After reading this huge tome by Bob Wolfinden I was absolutely convinced James Hanratty was innocent. I'd have staked my life on it. But the DNA evidence in 2002 proved he was guilty all along.
No witnesses (with the sole exception of Valerie Storie) were able to place Hanratty in the vicinity of Dorney Reach. Elsie Cobb said that around 14:30 on 21 August she saw a man passing her house who she described as aged 27 to 30, 5 foot 6 with dark hair brushed back and a thin nose. Her neighbour Frederick Newell added that the man had a sallow complexion. The gunman said "I've been in institutions since I was eight": Hanratty would not use words like "institutions". Mary Lanz, proprietor of the Old Station Inn, Taplow where Gregsten and Storie had last been before the cornfield was later able to identify Alphon as having also been there. Even if the Rhyl alibi is disregarded, Hanratty's meeting with Olive Dinwoodie would make his presence in Dorney Reach by 9 p.m. extremely implausible. On Thursday 24 August at 20:40 Hanratty sent a telegram from Lime Street, Liverpool in which he purported to be in London. In the first line up, Valerie Storie picked out with total certainty an innocent sailor instead of the police suspect Alphon. In the second line up, Hanratty stood out as his hair was bright orange and the police were so concerned about this they considered acquiring skullcaps. Although the cartridge cases were found in the Hotel Vienna, no one ever adequately explained how they came to be there the day before the murder.. Hanratty disposed of his suit jacket six weeks after the crime; Alphon disposed of his raincoat straight away Unlike the gunman's description of himself, Hanratty had never lived in a house with a cellar (let alone been locked in one and given only bread and water), was not coming up for PD, had not served five years for housebreaking and had already been in prison on the Isle of Wight. Valerie Storie had said that Jim was obviously not the gunman's real name despite what the gunman claimed. Juliana Galves said she saw Alphon with a pair of black gloves on his suitcase during his stay in the Vienna. Peter Alphon wrote to the Daily Express in 1962 saying he believed Hanratty was innocent and he supported a reprieve. Alphon wrote to the Home Secretary in 1962 saying "I killed Gregsten". In her original statement, Valerie Storie states the man who abducted her was in his 30s, whereas in her second statement she changed this to 'mid 20s'. James Hanratty was 25 but Peter Alphon was 31.
DNA evidence proved that Hanratty was guilty. It wasn't contaminated.
After some initial confusion (she'd been raped, paralysed and watched her boyfriend cold bloodedly gunned down) Valerie Storie picked out Hanratty with absolute certainty (she had good reason to remember his face). His guilt was nbever in doubt to anyone involved in the case. Alphon was an attention seeker with a long history of mental illness, seized upon by the anti-death penalty brigade. I suggest you save your sympathy for the hundreds of innocent murder victims (and many more victims of other crime) killed by released murderers on licence (about 11 years imprisonment on average) since the death penalty was abolished in 1965. Paul Foot's book, 'Who Killed Hanratty' started from the assumption that Hanratty was innocent and constructed a totally prejuduiced, ludicrous fairy tale. It's difficult to understand why, 50 years later, ANYONE would be bothered about the death of such a criminal, deviant murdering savage.
Re the Knox case: Knox and Sollecito supposedly found the broken window in the other flatmate's room, blood in the kitchen and Meredith Kercher's bedroom door locked with no answer, at about noon. At five past Knox telephoned the other flatmate, apparently concerned about Kercher. The emergency call to the police was not made for another FIFTY MINUTES. Put yourself in that position, you're innocent and find signs of a break-in in one room, blood in another and your flatmate, who was the only person sleeping in the apartment overnight, with a locked bedroom door and no answer. Would you wait fifty minutes to call the police? Especially after you'd just spoken to the other flatmate who was as mystified as you about events. It's absurd and inexplicable. I don't believe for one minute the Italian Police will be looking for other suspects.

You are wrong, it was Peter Alphon. the Hanratty DNA evidence was contaminated.

Elsie Cobb said that around 14:30 on 21 August she saw a man passing her house who she described as aged 27 to 30, 5 foot 6 with dark hair brushed back and a thin nose. Her neighbour Frederick Newell added that the man had a sallow complexion.
The gunman said "I've been in institutions since I was eight": Hanratty would not use words like "institutions".
Mary Lanz, proprietor of the Old Station Inn, Taplow where Gregsten and Storie had last been before the cornfield was later able to identify Alphon as having also been there.
Even if the Rhyl alibi is disregarded, Hanratty's meeting with Olive Dinwoodie would make his presence in Dorney Reach by 9 p.m. extremely implausible.
On Thursday 24 August at 20:40 Hanratty sent a telegram from Lime Street, Liverpool in which he purported to be in London.
In the first line up, Valerie Storie picked out with total certainty an innocent sailor instead of the police suspect Alphon.
In the second line up, Hanratty stood out as his hair was bright orange and the police were so concerned about this they considered acquiring skullcaps.

Unlike the gunman's description of himself, Hanratty had never lived in a house with a cellar (let alone been locked in one and given only bread and water), was not coming up for PD, had not served five years for housebreaking and had already been in prison on the Isle of Wight.
Valerie Storie had said that Jim was obviously not the gunman's real name despite what the gunman claimed.
Juliana Galves said she saw Alphon with a pair of black gloves on his suitcase during his stay in the Vienna.
Peter Alphon wrote to the Daily Express in 1962 saying he believed Hanratty was innocent and he supported a reprieve.
Alphon wrote to the Home Secretary in 1962 saying "I killed Gregsten".
In her original statement, Valerie Storie states the man who abducted her was in his 30s, whereas in her second statement she changed this to 'mid 20s'. James Hanratty was 25 but Peter Alphon was 31.
DNA evidence proved that Hanratty was guilty. It wasn't contaminated.
After some initial confusion (she'd been raped, paralysed and watched her boyfriend cold bloodedly gunned down) Valerie Storie picked out Hanratty with absolute certainty (she had good reason to remember his face). His guilt was nbever in doubt to anyone involved in the case. Alphon was an attention seeker with a long history of mental illness, seized upon by the anti-death penalty brigade.
I suggest you save your sympathy for the hundreds of innocent murder victims (and many more victims of other crime) killed by released murderers on licence (about 11 years imprisonment on average) since the death penalty was abolished in 1965.
Paul Foot's book, 'Who Killed Hanratty' started from the assumption that Hanratty was innocent and constructed a totally prejuduiced, ludicrous fairy tale.
It's difficult to understand why, 50 years later, ANYONE would be bothered about the death of such a criminal, deviant murdering savage.
Re the Knox case: Knox and Sollecito supposedly found the broken window in the other flatmate's room, blood in the kitchen and Meredith Kercher's bedroom door locked with no answer, at about noon. At five past Knox telephoned the other flatmate, apparently concerned about Kercher. The emergency call to the police was not made for another FIFTY MINUTES.
Put yourself in that position, you're innocent and find signs of a break-in in one room, blood in another and your flatmate, who was the only person sleeping in the apartment overnight, with a locked bedroom door and no answer. Would you wait fifty minutes to call the police? Especially after you'd just spoken to the other flatmate who was as mystified as you about events. It's absurd and inexplicable.
I don't believe for one minute the Italian Police will be looking for other suspects.

The anti-death penalty brigade, instead of making meaningless statements, construct arguments/counter-arguments to the specific points and specific cases. People who say violent, murdering rapists who leave women paralysed should NOT be executed can never say why apart from, 'It's immoral'. Morality, apart from absolutes, is a matter of opinion. You could just as well argue that it's 'immoral' to release such people, or NOT execute them.
The truth is people who commit such acts DESERVE death, no other punishment is proportionate to the crime. The victim's have posthumous rights, the perpetrator's have NONE.
Frank Castle you silly man. Can you not see that if we still lived in barbaric times where state murder was sanctioned innocent people such as Amanda Know, The Birmingham Six, The Guildford Four and countless others who have since been proven innocent would now be dead?
The death penalty must never be restored and thankfully never will.

Frank Castle and others are correct and most of Italy agree. Amanda Knox has got off on a technicality. End of. Let's hope the next appeal finds her guilty but I'm sure the US won't allow extradition!

And here we all are thinking, that labour don't use third party groups in elections to spread smear and allegations.
No to state sanctioned murder, DNA and new and vastly improved scientific tecniques have been discovered and improved beyond all recognition in the last thirty years, rendering miscarriages of justice a virtual impossibility. Name these 'countless other' victims of miscarriages of justice.
What's 'barbaric' about giving the perpetrators of horrendous crimes a lethal injection. Is it civilised to release them to walk the streets after ten or twenty tears to walk the streets whilst their victims are dead?
Since the abolition of hanging in 1965 several hundred people have been killed by released murderers on licence. These victims all had one thing in common, they WERE innocent.
