So you think we will have a genuine, binding referendum on Europe?? Cue Professor David Marquand!
I was a mature student at Salford University from 1985 to 1990. Studying there in the evening twice a week and at home the rest of the time. The lectures were in the evening, enabling the students to carry on working in the day. This arrangement had two very useful results. The students avoided money problems and also had a life outside of university, keeping in touch with the "real world" outside of the academic world.
One evening the department we were in, Politics and Contemporary History, hosted a special lecture by the head of the department and former Labour MP Professor David Marquand. He had been a member of Roy Jenkins' European staff when Jenkins had been a European Commissioner. He was a member of THE Establishment.
The lecture had not been started for very long when the Professor said something which stopped us taking notes and caused us to look at each other in disbelief. He quietly informed us that the big debate since the ending of WW2 was not "Should there be a united Europe" but was "We are having a united Europe. Do we have it overnight, unification in a short space of time? Or do we do it gradually, integrating the institutions and organisations so that it 'creeps up' on the electorate?" The answer that the higher powers gave was "gradually"!
So there it was. The consultations, talks, referenda etc etc were all show. It was already planned by the powers-that-be, the Bilderburgers / Illuminati / New World Order , choose your own description, that Europe would be a united super-state irrespective of the will or wishes of the people.
This was a private university lecture given to undergraduates. Such was the arrogance and self assured attitude of this representative of the ruling elite that it never occurred to him that he might have had objectors to his vision in the audience. So he provided us with "unwitting testimony " of the finest quality.
I have never forgotten this story, neither should you.
