199 years ago today....the anniversary of Waterloo."UP GUARDS AND AT 'EM"
Today is the anniversary of the last time the French tried to lock horns with the British. Sunday 18th June 1815. The Battle of Waterloo. The little Corsican corporal watched in horror as the 1st Foot guards and the 52nd Regiment of foot stopped , staggered and then turned back his elite Old Guard.
The victory placed Britain in a leading position in the world. Taken together with the Industrial Revolution and Nelson's victory ten years earlier at Trafalgar, Britain was the world's first super power.
Two centuries on the strange noise you can hear is that made by the 'Iron Duke' turning in his grave.
