Air pollution linked to higher risk of lung cancer and heart failure

Air pollution, chiefly from traffic exhaust fumes in cities, is having a serious and sometimes fatal effect on health, according to two studies that link it to lung cancer and heart failure. Air pollution increases the risk of lung cancer even at levels lower than those recommended by the European Union, which are also standard in the UK, says a paper in the Lancet Oncology journal. Although smoking is a far bigger cause of lung cancer, a significant number of people will get the disease because of where they live.

The study, codenamed Escape, combined data from 17 cohort studies in nine European countries covering a total of almost 313,000 people. The size of the research gives it greater authority than previous work.
It looked at the effect of long-term exposure to nitrogen oxides and particulate matter – PM2.5, which has a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres, and PM10, with a diameter less than 10 micrometres. Among the participants, 2,095 developed lung cancer during an average 13 years of follow-up.

The researchers, led by Ole Raaschou-Nielsen from the Danish Cancer Society Research Centre, found that for every increase of five micrograms per cubic metre of PM2.5 pollution, the risk of lung cancer rose by 18%, and for every increase of 10 micrograms per cubic metre in PM10 pollution the risk increased by 22%. They found no link between lung cancer and nitrogen oxides. Read more: The Guardian

I hope those who have previously attacked J Hall for warning of the dangers of air pollution read this article and then apologise to him. Mr Hall has been warning of the dangers of airborne pollutants for years. If it was not for the hard work put in by J Hall and others we would now have a hideous bypass funnelling lots more traffic into Tameside and as a direct consequence cancer causing pollutants into our lungs. Thank you for your efforts Mr Hall, not just in helping prevent the building of the bypass but also for bringing the facts about deadly airborne pollutants to the attention of the wider public. I appreciate the truth exposed on TC however TMBC have been totally suppressing deliberately for 15 years the amounts of these highly dangerous toxins you and your families are daily ingesting
They have gone much further
than ever thought, and created what is the vile ultimate deception perpetrated on 225,000 people concerning
where they sited their real time hidden air pollution monitoring equipment, thereby knowingly and deliberately falsifying the
reality air pollution toxins you are all ingesting daily.
This deception is huge in scale because by legislation demands you are entitled to daily know what toxins you, your children
are ingesting.
Who knows all these facts in Tameside ??? but have acted constantly in a devious, deceptive and extreme callous manner towards the Tameside Public, who reside in one of the most dangerously air polluted regions of the North of England
1. All Councillors have been aware of this action of hiding your pollution levels and are guilty therefore of abusing their Constituents by putting them at extreme risk of fatal diseases.
Your MP`s in particular Mr Gwynne has played a major part in this deplorable deception, through knowing for at least 12 years the full facts but continuing to bury the facts along with the dead and dying,
His latest unbelievable statement in the House of Commons clearly indicates his main health interest and its not yours quote:

Andrew Gwynne: It is a pleasure to see you in the Chair, Mr Bone. I
congratulate the hon. Member for Bosworth (David Tredinnick) on
securing the debate. As someone who, over the past few days, has been
suffering with quite bad hayfever, I would quite like a remedy, herbal
or otherwise, for my suffering. I am pleased that we have had a chance
in today's debate to discuss some very important issues.

No mention of Cancers.Heart/Lung,Strokes,
Dementia,Pulmonary diseases,Children s serious Health issues, and the toxins now affecting babies and fetus in his own Constituency, yet he is the Labour Shadow Government spokesperson on health matters, forgetting ??totally his 47,000 plus constituents have have become seriously pollution affected families, yet never
mentioned by this MP.
I contend that all Tameside Politicians have acted in a manner which has become crimes against humanity for at least 15 years by deliberately hiding the true facts of the terrible destructive toxins you have internally been ingesting.
and that Men and Women Politicians in Tameside have been complicit in this terrible cover up for years
I condemn them totally for such callous disgusting and
despicable actions taken against the 225,000 public and families.
As an Ex Labour supporter of many years I can only say the facts are clear and
substantiated and cannot be disputed by TMBC and its Tameside Politicians who have knowingly been hiding their abuse of children, babies and adults constantly without any interest at all whether you die or live whilst they hide the facts and fight to defend their style of administration.
I have had to fight long and hard under considerable deliberate onslaught from the TMBC Cartel of Politicians hoping to stop my exposures.
But I trust the decent folk of Tameside will accept the truth of what has occurred, and maybe with changes the health, welfare and well being of Tamesider`s will soon be no longer in the dangerous and soiled hands of those elected to improve our lives not secretly instigating the killing of people through their hiding the truth policy.

However much technology, awareness and regulation reduce pollution, the vast increases in population (400,000 from June 2011 - June 2012 alone) caused by mass immigration and the massively greater and exponentially growing immigrant breeding rate (in what was already virtually the most overcrowded country in the world) will eradicate improvements.
This also goes for the massive and ever worsening strain on our infrastructure, schools, NHS, public services etc, all caused by sheer weight of numbers.
Badgers, rats, foxes etc get culled when their numbers cause serious problems, people just go on breeding.

If building roads causes congestion, then why don't we just rip up 95% of the existing road network and then all roads will be completely free from congestion and all our problems solved. Honestly...

And I doubt any delay in the building of any by-pass is attributable to one jumped up armchair eco-toxicologist a couple of towns away. I'm sure the decision makers in any such matter will treat Dentonian views on Mottram road building the same way they would views coming from Gorton or Stockport.

To suggest that a bypass would increase pollution is totally missing the reality of whats actually causing most of it.

Gridlocked traffic is causing far more pollution simply based on the fact a car stuck in traffic moving 10 paces at a time uses far more fuel that one traveling at 56-60mph on a clear run.

I do agree with one commentator on saying we should rip up 95% of roads. They are absurdly expensive to maintain and most people have a pair of legs.

Anonymous said...

Also I think you will find that cars kill more people than smoking does. Health professionals know this but rarely admit it. Probably because most of them couldn't live without one.

I tell them you stop driving and I will stop smoking.

Two years ago i was going on holiday and was reading posts on TC by Mr Hall. Two years on i"m off on my holidays and guess what. Yes the same stuff that Mr Hall churns out and rants about. Two years on and no change. We all know that cars create pollution. We all know that pollution can have health effects. So does society give up on motorised travel. Manchester Airport where many people start their holidays is within easy reach of the vast majority of people living in Greater Manchester thanks to the M60. People in Tameside can get on the M60 thanks to a couple of junctions, one being at Denton. Mr Hall knows that life expectancy in his area of Denton near the M60 is greater then other parts of Tameside that are nowhere near a motorway or even a busy road. Thats because life expectancy is due to many factors and not just traffic pollution. My parents had a life expectancy of 71 and 73. Mine is currently over 80 and thats with all the traffic and all the pollution. Mr Hall's rants will not improve my life expectancy and i do not believe he deserves an apology from anyone.

Bottle necks will exist if we don't build big enough roads in the right places. When you leave most motorway junctions all you hit is traffic lights every few yards. Therein lies the problem. I'll pass you back the white stick i think you need it.

Anonymous said...

For too long now we have been trying to patch together and make do with roads that were never built with the amount of traffic using them in mind. The density of buildings that surround main roads makes increasing capacity inconvenient and prohibitively expensive. Only real way to solve the problem is to get the bulldozers out and start again. If I had my way I would bulldoze most of Tameside there isn't much worth keeping.

Anonymous said...

At the same time as rebuilding it all we could incorporate sensible planing that makes it safer to cycle. Something that would benefit public health immensely.

In this day and age we should be building all roads with an emphasis on cycling. Many people who would like to cycle more won't because its too dangerous.

I've written about this on my blog, the way the news media control the way we process news. They make stories "disappear" by relegating them from the headlines, then they simply stop reporting on them. A lot of people are so busy that they rarely get past the headlines, so their heads a being messed with. The jobs a good un huh?

Anonymous said...

I don't believe that so many people are too busy to find time to care. Most people if you talk to them care a lot about many issues. We all play our part in contributing to issues such as pollution but no one wants to give up the liberties they enjoy in creating it. Therefore it becomes a necessary evil. Blocking development of new roads is not the answer. Its making transport more environmentally friendly and incorporating ecologically sound planning. Sustainable communities and cooperative living is the way forward.

The Metrolink should be expanded as a way of cutting congestion. The new line from West Didsbury and Chorlton is very popular and many people now leave the car at home and get the tram into town.

Anonymous said...

Its looking like the Metrolink will be up and running very soon now. Test runs are about to begin. I would like to see it linked up to Stockport and beyond. It would make more job opportunities easier to access. Currently its either a long bus ride just to get to the town center or two train journeys that are expensive to make and overcrowded at peak times.

The metrolink is an expensive, inflexible, low capacity, outdated system that causes significant congestion, pollution and delay in its on road presence (Manchester city centre's traffic flow average speed has been decimated by it) and can only exist at all because cars carry 80% of the moving public with Manchester's 2000 buses alone doing ten times as much work as the tram.
A miniscule percentage shift from the private car to trams (or trains) would completely overload both systems.
With the ongoing immgrant led population explosion, mass, flexible, cheap forms of transportation are what's needed (promoting scooter or small capacity motorcycle use for example would have a signifcant effect on congestion and pollution yet the promotion of the bicycle is constantly pushed despite the obvious fact that the vast majority will never switch to it) not a return to a failed system from the past, when the population was massively lower and private cars much more scarce.
Apart from a few miles in Sheffield and Nottingham nowhere else in the country has implemented this outdated and failed system that costs massively more, in terms of financial outlay and congestion created than its relatively tiny carrying capacity can justify. Just over a hundred trams will make barely a dent in Greater Manchester's burgeoning population's travel requirements. It serves a purpose mainly for a small percentage of commuters whilst the vast majority of the moving public will never use it, despite massively funding its construction and having to suffer its obstructive presence.

'As for Bob the Builder, its only one of the many TMBC'

As I said in my post Mr Hall does not change. 2 years ago he accused me of being a TMBC hound or similar. And just to prove my point that he does not change he accuses me again. This is why you cannot have a serious debate on this site if Mr Hall gets involved. If he starts to lose the argument he resorts to abusive language or simply dismisses people as being MPs, Councillors or TMBC staff. He cannot accept that there are normal people who do not agree with his comments or at least agree's that the number of road vehicles have significantly increased since the 1960's. We all enjoy the benefits of modern life but Mr Hall wants to blame everything on Tameside MP's or councillors. I think if I was as concerned as Mr Hall about the traffic at the M60 interchange at Denton then I'd move house. But instead he uses this site for ranting on and on.

Anonymous said...

We need all forms of transport. Trams don't carry as many people as buses because there are many times more of them.

Think I give a toss about people wanting to drive in the city center... Not really... I would ban cars from most of the city. Anyone with half a brain uses public transport.

I think you will find Metrolink is a far cleaner form of transport than buses. Expensive abuse of money that could be spent somewhere else maybe I will agree as far as the Ashton line goes. I will not benefit because I will still get the train to go to Manchester. There is nothing between here and there I would want to see.

Anonymous said...

Also trasms don't stop at every street corner. I hate buses and avoid them like the plague. They don't let prams on trams so I don't have to listen to whining screaming babies that people can't control jumping all over the seat next to me. Which is the last experience I have of being on a bus.

If you want to bang on about cost and outlay. Many people don't own cars but we still pay taxes to fund roads. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean we don't need it. Nothing more obstructive than cars.

When they announced the metrolink first thing I said was it is a waste of money but since I have used it I have changed my mind. Its works well if you use train and tram to get to a lot of places and saves time. I can access more better paid jobs than I could before. The benefits that it brings to people makes the cost insignificant.

I would of built a monorail personally but that would have cost a lot more. It wouldn't need to travel on ground level and can be built in dense urban areas with little impact.

How heartedly I endorse this appreciation of John Hall - Air pollution reduction would increase life expectancy (if implemented) by up to 8 months, according to Dr, Julian Huppert who asked a question of the Prime Minister at Prime Minister's Questions this Wednesday 10th July. The PM is going to more fully answer Dr. Huppert's question by letter. Air pollution, according to Government data, already kills about 1 in 2 people today - why is so little done to address the cause? The totally unregulated nanotoxins that are too small to be regulated by current legislation - apparently?

How can Bob the Builder have a debate on this air pollution subject when he never refers to facts.
Well for his benefit I repeat these:
A Longdendale Bypass would as HA evidence stated create 45,000 more vehicles mainly HGV`s along the M67 towards the Junction 24 M60.(Fact)
TMBC MP`s and Councillors have stated in writing the present Junction 24 is the most polluted and traffic congested in the North (Fact)
TMBC its Councillors and MP`s have deceived for 15 years the 225,000 public by
using their main pollution
monitors in a field overlooking countryside with open views to the Pennines.(Fact)
TMBC refuse to offer real time air pollution monitoring anywhere near roads highways and Motorways (Fact as indicated in their documents)
Denton and Audenshaw AQMA Maps created by TMBC show a huge area of Air Pollution covering an area where 47,000 people live (Fact)
The propsed ByPass WAS RO CREATE A HGV/Cars MK11 M62 Highway from Yorks/Humberside to the M60 passing through Hyde.Denton /Audenshaw area`s.
TMBC was denoted on the Dept of Transport reports as having the No 1 spot in the UK for increased traffic with a much large percentage than anywhere else. (Fact)
TMBC have been making decisions for years to please their cosy linked Developers ?? with plans to create empty buildings all over the area hoping to attract more vehicles. (Fact)
Air Pollution in Tameside is one of the UK`s top spots for air toxins which exceed all declared acceptable levels which is well known to be extremely dangerous to humans (Fact)
I get bloody annoyed that people like BobBuilder never ever study the facts on Government Department documents.
Why has the HA and TMBC refused to put a "test ban" on HGVs across Longdendale
for 25 years.
The known intention made clear to all those giving evidence at the past Public Inquiries that the DfT/HA/TMBC want to open up a major route from European
Countries and documentation proved that it would help for a M62 MK11 to be built across the Peak District National Park to bring more HGV`s from the Humberside Ports (Fact and documents have proved that 100% to be true)
I produce 400 page dossiers at Public Inquiries which tell the full truth based on intense scrutiny of documents not known by the public and in giving evidence written, filmed, and verbal,Not One Person used as expert witnesses for the DfT.HA/TMBC plans could and still cannot dispute the facts I can substantiate and confirm when it comes to detailed and accurate facts on a variety of involved subject matters relating to Traffic volumes.Air pollution, the M62 Mk11 intended HGV corridor.
I cannot put 400 pages of facts in anyway on TC but do not accuse me of anything other than after 15 years of work exposing the truth.
Your suggestion of removing is a paltry attempt to stop me exposing TMBC for what it is,and my concerns are spread over many stunts pulled by TMBC over many years for which I have numerous pages of not rhetoric or rants.
If you enjoy seeing increasing levels of extremely serious toxins stuffed into the population of Tameside especially kids and infants then that denotes who I am dealing with whether it be those gobbing it with no facts or extensive research into the fine details of what is happening in Tameside.
Remove forget it,shut up forget it,stop reading the
diseases and deaths linked to PM2.5 Particulates forget it,naming the Councillors and MP`s who are absolute hypocrites.

77% of commuters and 60% commuting into the city centre use cars. It has been calculated that nationally if a mere 5% of car users tried to shift onto the rail network it would have to face a totally impossible 50% increase in passenger numbers, even an enormously extended network (totally impractical in terms of cost and space) could only cope with a tiny fraction of that. The same would apply if people tried to shift out of their cars onto other forms of railbound transport such as the tram. As always the vast majority of the donkey work is done by the car backed up in a small way by the bus.
The reason there are 2000 buses and only 100 trams is the massive cost of construction of tram networks and their fundamentally obstructive, inflexible nature, buses generally flow with traffic. The severely limited number of stops compared to buses also makes them unusable for many people.
This means trams can never carry more than a miniscule percentage of the load and are consequently unjustifiable in terms of their cost and the massive delay and obstruction they inflict on the vast majority of the moving public.
A monorail, providing it can be kept above and out of the way of other traffic would indeed provide a sensible NON-OBSTRUCTIVE and useful contribution, its sheer initial cost however would be a prohibitive factor.
Calling the metrolink clean ignores the vast amounts of pollution it creates by electricity consumption and also causing wholesale traffic congestion and delay.

You people attacking J Hall are probably councillors or council hirelings, but assuming you are not, you ought to be grateful that you have such a courageous civil rights champion fighting for the basic human rights if all Tamesiders because if it were not for regime opponents such as J Hall the corruption and deceit would be infinitely worse than it already us. The bent politicians who rubber stamp enormous supermarket developments on top of peoples homes and support major trunk routes through residential areas in return for shekels would have free reign were it not for the likes if J Hall and I say: Long live J Hall. Long live those who resist tyranny and long live freedom from authoritarian apparatchiks' and J Hall, I salute you as a hero of the people and a hero of the peoples resistance.

... the main benefit i would point out of the metrolink is for people to access jobs that would otherwise be difficult to get to. I find myself sitting on the fence when it cost to the question of was it worth the money spent on it. Some parts of the network I would say its worth it but find it hard to justify the cost and benefit of bringing it to Ashton when we have good train links to Manchester and anywhere inbetween a bus ride is easy to make.

His followers bang on about facts and being educated but when you read their comments they seem to be unable to say anything constructive and call you things like nutter and traitor.

If J Hall was council leader Tameside would cease to function.

You are all discovering what we discovered years ago and that is the man is impossible. He has been causing trouble for as long as I can remember and the best way to deal with him is challenge his ranting with facts or completely ignore him as there is no middle ground and it is impossible to enter into rational dialogue with him as he only sees things from his own point of view.

So what Mr Hall does not tell people is that the pollution monitoring station at Two Trees is part of a Greater Manchester initiative to look at pollution levels across all types of environment. The Two Trees site was chosen, not just by TMBC, to show ambient urban pollution levels. There are monitoring stations throughout Greater Manchester that will look at road side pollution levels like the one at Piccadilly Manchester. So far from being deceptive TMBC are working with Greater Manchester authorities to show overall pollution levels across the conurbation. Mr Hall is the deceptive one and rants because a station is not positioned near to his home. But he lives in an area that enjoys long life expectancy.

'TMBC are definately abusing all of us and our families by choosing a field facing open countryside land up Two Trees Lane to monitor our air.'

A post by Mr Hall in disguise. Bob the Builder is right. Mr Hall would have us believe this station is hidden away when actually it's meant to be measuring pollutant levels away from main highways. Come on Mr Hall come clean with everyone.

I am apparently a J Hall enemy. His facts a bout pollution are true. No doubt about that but his ideas of solving the problem are in no way ground breaking.

Mr Hall keep it coming, we look to you and others to stand up to the Labour Mafia. NEVER GIVE IN!

I don't have to be labour mafia to think J Hall has his head up his... I hate labour so stop using it as an excuse.

Keep what going exactly Mr. Coatholder?

Pretending to be other people to not only agree with his own posts, but to day what a jolly great fellow he is?

You may well also think that there are staff at TMBC etc paid to monitor Hall et al. Those of us who have visited TMBC HQ on business recently will testify that it is like the Marie Celeste in there.

NEVER GIVE IN (to common sense, honesty and reason, eh?)

If i worked for TMBC i would be out enjoying my fat pay cheque. Bollocks to what J hall has whine about.

@A Longdendale Bypass would as HA evidence stated create 45,000 more vehicles mainly HGV`s along the M67 towards the Junction 24 M60.(Fact)

.. so one in four Tamesiders are going to rush out to buy a HGV then. It might make it possible but don't mean it will happen. There is no economic appetite for it.

Blessed his he who is not ashamed of me.

If the highway agency decides to build the bypass I doubt J hall will stop them. If anything is holding it back its the cost.

The Longdendale bypass is one of the most sensible ideas I ever heard. Its one of the major arteries of the road network that has been there for many centuries. Why its not a bypass already beggers belief.I would go further and build a motorway through it. The future of our borough needs the ability to trade with places along that route and further into Europe. Its not about making more traffic its about making places accessible.

Keep Longdendale green thank you very much

Anonymous said...

Its not green its a gridlocked hell hole. If you want to live in a green area then move house.

Keep beautiful England green, stop the cars and heavy lorry's going through there.

Or stop buying the crap that comes in lorries.

Stop the planet because longdendale has a field? Get over it. You live in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its just a road. We here in the rest of tameside aren't going to turn down the chance of bringing investment into the area because of a couple of nimby residents that want to live like neanderthals.

You won't fond strength from Christ, the man was a five foot tall pacifist who cried for his daddy when the going got tough.
If you want strength pray to Thor, god of Thunder, god of the common man, the Germanic equivalent of Herakles. Simply ask him for aid in finding your own strength, honour him in word and deed, he will make you strong indeed.

As an advocate for the building of the bypass one thing I would argue is that it should be just a bypass. Planning permission for industry along the route should be banned.

A poster@12.43 asks: What happened to the indigenous population of Levenshulme?

I can tell you first hand, most have fled, many to Tameside, due to the nightmare of Levenshulme becoming a dumping ground for third world economic migrants. Life for native residents of Levenshulme is now unbearable and that's why most have voted with their feet and left.

Here is an interesting website showing what Levy was like pre-invasion.
