Nokia Lumia 800 first opinion

Well it’s that time of the year again; upgrade time and I am now the proud owner of a new Nokia Lumia 800 and I must say I am hugely impressed.

On paper the Nokia Lumia 800 with its single core processor looks under powered when compared to the dual and quad core smart phones currently on the market but the simple fact is; it isn't. Compared to my now demoted dual core Android phone this Nokia is a lightning performer.

The new Windows 7.5 operating system using the Metro interface takes a little getting used to when coming over from an Android based systems but once you get to grips with it, it is absolutely brilliant. It is very intuitive and slick to use plus it looks good too.

Battery life on the Lumia 800 is acceptable for a smart phone. With average usage you can expect the battery to last for about 18 hours.

Included with the Lumia 800 is Nokia's fantastic free satellite navigation package called Nokia Drive. Having this on your phone truly does make the need for a dedicated sat nav unit superfluous. For those who don't drive, Nokia's other GPS based apps are excellent too. If you need to know where the nearest ATM, restaurant or coffee shop is just press the local scout tab and all be revealed, including walking directions.

The camera sports a Carl Zeiss tessar lens and has an 8m pixel resolution. The camera is quite good, but not as good as the camera on the king of all smart phones, the Apple iPhone4s.

Call quality is superb and the talk to text feature for composing text messages works remarkably well.

Synchronising email, Facebook, Twitter etc into one usable tab is a doddle.

The cut down version of Microsoft Office which contains Word, and Excel etc could come in useful at times.

On the downside there are a few quirky annoyances which I am sure will be ironed out when Windows 7.5 gets the Windows 7.8 upgrade. Firstly the alarm only works when the phone is switched on. This is not good for someone who values their sleep and does not want to be disturbed in the middle of the night by the now ubiquitous spam text messages informing you of a non-existent accident or PPI claim for which you are entitled to compensation. Secondly there is no removable media so the 16gb internal memory is what you are stuck with and finally, the Bluetooth is limited in its ability to communicate with other devices, again I am sure this is  an oversight which will be resolved when Windows 8.0 is released.

Nokia as a company are in dire trouble. Just yesterday the company announced 10,000 job losses. Nokia are still a giant global player but they catastrophically misjudged the growth of the smart phone market which allowed Apple, Samsung and HTC to take a commanding lead. As a last throw of the dice Nokia has now entered into a Faustian Pact with Microsoft. Maybe Nokia's deal with the devil will pay off, if it doesn't they are doomed but one thing is for sure: The Nokia Lumia 800 is a fantastic phone and I strongly recommend it.

The de-evolution of man said...

The spread of internet phones has resulted in the spread of: 'Head down, neck locked forward, intent self-absorbed stare' syndrome. These products are probably the biggest killers of human verbal communication ever invented. The canteen where I work is full of people with this syndrome, usually under 30 year olds. Most of the time no doubt they're involved in important 'work' such as posting/reading inane drivel on Facebook or Twitter.

not a racist attack say police said...

A TEENAGE boy was knocked unconscious with a house brick, stabbed with a screwdriver and left for dead in a vicious race attack.

Joseph Haigh, 14, was savagely beaten by the gang of up to 15 Asian youths in Thornhill, Dewsbury, on Friday, 2nd June 2012.

The gang hurled racist abuse at him, constantly referring to the colour of his skin, yet police refused to classify the attack as racially-motivated.

Joseph's dad Jonathan, 42, of Thornhill, said: It was a racist attack. They were calling him 'white trash' and white this, that and the other. This is why people are angry about what is happening in this country. If it had been an attack by whites on an Asian lad it would have been a definite race attack. When it's the other way round they don't want to know.

Joseph was out with his friends at around 9pm on Friday near Thornhill's Rectory Park when the gang of Asians, said to be aged 18-20, came at them.Joseph's friends scattered and Joseph tried to make off on his bike, only to be confronted by one of the thugs who smashed him in the head with half a brick.Mr Haigh, a lorry driver, told how that blow knocked his son unconscious and he instinctively put his hands over his face to protect himself. Another youth lunged at him with a screwdriver while others kicked and punched him about the head. Mr Haigh said: They went to stab him in the face and it was only because he had his hands up that they missed. He was stabbed in one hand, his other hand was broken and a cut on his forehead was down to the bone.If they had hit him a bit harder with the house brick they could have killed him. They just left him for dead.

Joseph's teeth were also badly damaged and he may lose a tooth. His teeth were wired and he needed specialist treatment at the trauma unit at Leeds General Infirmary. One of Joseph's friends raised the alarm and when Mr Haigh arrived his son was laid out in a bus shelter covered in blood.Joseph's bike was also missing and was believed to have been stolen by the gang.

Joseph was off school all week and tensions were said to be running high at Thornhill Community Science College. "It's shocking what's happened," said Mr Haigh. "I have lived in Thornhill all my life and there were fights between whites and Asians 20 years ago. But this wasn't braying someone and giving them a black eye, it was a vicious attack. You don't go out with a house brick and a screwdriver if you're not going to seriously hurt someone." Mr Haigh, who has a wife Stacey, 40, and another son James, 19, said he wanted out of Dewsbury. "It used to be a good, thriving town but Dewsbury has got nothing to offer us anymore."

A police spokesman said the initial police report had not classified the attack as racially-motivated but inquiries were continuing. Insp Jenny Thompson, of Dewsbury police, said: "This was a vicious, unprovoked attack on a young boy which left him with some serious injuries. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated within Dewsbury and we will be focusing extra patrols around the area as part of on-going work.

Sadly the case of Joseph Haigh is only the tip of the iceberg.

Regarding Britain's survival, if relatively peaceful action isn't taken in the next few years the only two possible outcomes will be our destruction or an extremely bloody civil war.

All Great Britain is on course to end up like Dewsbury.

Civil unrest will become rampant before long, the wrong parties will be blamed and will be attacked.

I tried Windows Phone and wasn't too keen. I've stuck to Android.

It doesn’t come with games pre-installed Trevor. You download games from Nokia Marketplace.

Anon@07:38, Windows does take some getting used to after years of using Android but once I got the hang of the operating system I really rate it. If it is too little too late to save Nokia as an independent company only time will tell but I maintain the Lumia 800 is an excellent phone and a worthy alternative to Apple and Android based smart phones.
