Roy Oldham 1934 - 2010

The death was announced earlier today of Councillor Roy Oldham, the longest serving local government leader in Britain.

Our Condolences go to his family and friends.

Although this blog often disagreed with his views he was respected as a gentleman and a professional

Agreed with your comments TC
Cancer is a fucking awfull disease and can hit any of us. I am just greatfull he is out of any pain.
No doubt we will see crocodile tears from some of those people who ousted him as leader only a month ago to feather their own nest. Loyalty is a trait very much missing today something non of them showed towards their leader Roy. For as much as we disagreed with him over the years you can't help but admire his grit and determination towards the cause. RIP Roy

its so tragic what hes had to put up with recently.he had cancer his wife died his sister and brother in law died then too cap it all the vultures in the council turned gangster on him and being 2 faced deposed him. Now look what we have, a wanna be Derek Hatton as leader and a backstabbing ex con with tatoos on both hands as deputy. fuck knows who will respect us as a council.at least roy had a brain, and that was told too me many years ago,by a former Tory council leader R I P cuncillor and give all my love to my friend margeret xxx when you see her

In politics, they say all careers end in tragedy. Roy Oldham's was no different.

He was evidently a committed public servant and a man who was extremely loyal to his party. It is indeed tragic that his last great political memory was to see himself stabbed in the back by his very own party.

I disagreed with Roy Oldham on most things but I respected his loyalty, dedication, grit and determination. My condolences to his family.

RIP Roy - you were one of the best.

The Tories will now take Roy’s old seat - it is there for the taking and if it was not for Roy’s personal following the seat would already be Conservative.

I am filled with anger and disgust at the traitors who plotted against and then ousted Roy even though they knew full well he was in the final stages of a terminal illness. Why could the greedy opportunistic b@stards not have waited a few months longer and allowed his life to end while he was still in the top job with his head held high? Roy was a winner and we should remember him for all the great things he did for Tameside and curse the traitors who brought unhappiness to him in his last weeks on this earth.

As T.C. said, we may have disagreed over politics but he was a professional and a gentleman.

We will increase the majority in Longdendale ,funny how people become more popular when they have died isn't it.

Crawl back under your stone 'anon'. You are guilty of sending an hounourable Party member to his grave after your treachery.

Anonymous said...

As a politician he was obviously formidable, and what he did for Tameside may only be realised in the course of time, when the benefits we now take for granted gradually (or not so gradually) disappear under the new leadership. But as a human being, from personal experience he was a complete twat (moderator, substitute synonym of your choice).

RIP Roy said...

He was authoritarian. He had to keep a tight ship for the good of the Party and the good of the borough. Roy was firm but fair and the way he was betrayed is unforgivable.

John Roberts said...

The only thing that can stop the Tories winning in Longdendale is if UKIP and/or the Lib Dems are thick enough to stand.

Neutral said...

If UKIP and the LD's have any principles they will stand aside and let the Tories wipe out Labour in Longendale.

I don't know a lot about Roy Oldham - I'm not into politics, but I do know he was well respected and my elderly parents, who live in Tameside, but are not Labour supporters, thought he did a great job in the area. How else could someone become the longest serving council leader (ever - I think)?
Give him the respect he deserves. He devoted his life to Tameside.

With the benefit of hindsight, it was a tragic breakdown of communication (between him / Quinn / the doctors) that he couldn't have stayed in office until the end.

Roy and I crossed swords many times over the years and with hindsight on nearly every occasion he stuck to his guns and he was right. H

He and Margaret are now reunited. Goodnight and god bless.

It's funny how people say how much they respected someone when they are dead, yet not so keen to make that know when they are still alive.

Ok RIP Roy, They say that you should never talk ill of the dead. Yes! Roy may have been a nice man, a family man. But Roy was not Mr Clean. Mr Oldham was a self-interest politician, he was a greedy ambitions politician like the whole lot of them. The vast majority of the population never vote in elections because they know that to be true. Politics can never save Britain now! because of the foul Stence of Sleaze and corruption that Hangs Around Lib/Lab/Con.

The right decision said...

Replacing Mr Oldham was the correct thing to do he was very ill and could not have continued to run the council.
Looks like someone had to do the right thing politics can be cruel and time waits for no man or woman.

Mark Lord said...

What do you make of the dross who've replaced him?

Most tameside residents were glas enough to see him out in May. Don't be hypocritical ablout him now. We didn't like him. He made our borough a laughing stock everywhere.

Red Flag said...

Those who took part in the ousting of Roy did so to feather their own nests and squinty-eyed Quinn gave them well paid posts they could never hold in the real world of employment - most of them are wooden tops. Roy held together a motley crew of Labour councillors and created an outstanding Council out of a a load of parochial areas. An outstanding politician is now gone and has left a void in Tameside. RIP Roy and thoughts to your friends and family

Tameside is a wonderful place to live compared to many other areas thanks to the good work of lots of Labour councillors, just take a look at the crime figures out today Tameside is one of the safest places in the country.
Tory cuts will put an end to all the good work we will need another strong leader and a good team once again to deliver for us, put your trust in experienced Labour councillors again.
Dont live in the past celebrate Roy's achievements even though many had a go at him on here, he leaves an excellent team to carry on the good work.

I cannot argue against the person saying Tameside is a great place to live. I used to live in Longsight and believe me when I say it is living hell when you belong to the minority community. The racism against British people is something most people would not believe unless they witnessed it themselves.

Ex Tory voter, the government's crime 'reductions' have been achieved by clever statistical manipulation. Do you feel safe walking the streets wherever and whenever you want? Many areas of Britain are no-go areas at certain times of day. The only reason car theft, for example, has gone down is manufacturers fitting immobilisers. The perpetrators have simply changed their pattern and type of offending.
The aim should be to get back to the crime levels of 60 years ago which were miniscule compared to now. Then, the criminal justice system was punishment based with much longer sentences and at the core was the ultimate sanction, the death penalty.

Goodbye Mr. Tameside said...

I wish that Roy rests in peace. He has had so much hurt over the past two years and hopefully he will be in a better place.

I must say that I blame Councillor Oldham's swift deterioration on the stresses placed on him by the Quinn thugs. Being council leader for Roy, gave him something to do and took his mind off the daily torment of his life troubles. Kieran took Roy's hope away from him. He should hang his head in shame.

Roy wasn't in it for the money, but for the good of the people. He put people before politics and it's one of the reasons he and the Labour Party remained in power for so long.

Good bye and God bless my friend.

Those that post on here pretending to be friends of Roy Oldham really do give yourselves away with your terminology. I guess that the intention is to try and create some division but it is rather transparent and will therefore fail.
You need to be cleverer than that.
RIP my friend

Mellor Road Mincer is quoted on the Tameside Advertiser website as saying, "An extremely sad loss. Councillor Oldham will always be remembered in Tameside for his hard work and tireless dedication for Tameside and his constituents in Longdendale. May he rest in peace."

It's a shame he didn't have the same type of respect when he was writing his nasty and vindictive garbage on his blog. Is that why he's taken it down, so we can't see what a two-faced individual he is?

Praise be to Thatcher said...

I remember Thatcher. She dragged this country back from the brink of a unionised hell.

Oh yes, I recall the days before Thatcher: the Winter of Discontent, the unburied dead, the uncollected rubbish, greedy workshy unions who striked more than they worked.

Oh yes, the glory days of the socialist movement - experts at picketlines, lighting fires in the snow, and dropping concrete blocks from motorway bridges.

If they had put as much effort into working as they did striking then maybe our cars wouldn't now be made abroad or the coalmines may have made a profit every year instead of just the one year out of 40+ post war years.

I am glad Thatcher crushed the unions. They are an archaic relic of the 19th century and belong in the pages of history.

Keep to the true facts I think your right.
One of the spiteful actions of Mr John Taylor, was to meet the thug in this video. The sole intention being to secure information from the head of a well known criminal family in Hyde, in order to try and smear Mr West's name in the local elections. Mr Taylor stated on the internet that he would be prepared to meet this thug again. You see! John Charles Taylor is a corrupt individual he will stop at nothing to smear someone's name, even if it means using a well known criminal family to do just that.

He was a man. Many say a great man, and many others say otherwise.

He was a person though and still deserves the respect that any other person deserves when they pass.

RIP - Roy

Yes indeed. Mr Oldham may have been a decent man looking after his family. But don't tell me that he was not a self-interest politician because he was.

You can't get away from the fact that Roy Oldham was not good for Tameside. Known all over the country and for the wrong reasons. The man who talked about public buildings as 'my town hall', and was often too drunk to stand up when he had to appear in public. I have been ashamed for years to think that this was the man whom represented decent people in the public arena.
