Plans for Ashton Arcades

London-based Hark Group has been granted an extension to its planning permission for the proposed 180,000 sq ft retail development at Ashton Arcades shopping centre in Tameside.

The consent will allow Hark Group to progress with its plans to transform the centre and deliver a new integrated transport interchange, due for completion in 2013.

Rob Cossey, director of Hark Group, said: “This announcement shows that the council continues to support our ambition to develop the retail offer at Ashton Arcades.

“We have worked very closely with our public sector partners at Tameside MBC and GMPTE to design an integrated scheme which can be progressively developed to continue the regeneration of Ashton town centre.

“Significant investment such as this in the town centre will help boost the local economy and bring new jobs to the borough. Tameside MBC and GMPTE both have ambitious proposals for Ashton and with the progression of our own plans, Hark Group will continue to work to deliver an integrated scheme of which Ashton can be proud.”Crains Manchester Business

More shops: With 8 million and rising economically inactive, whose benefits will very shortly be slashed, rising unemployment and ever lower wages for those who do work who's going to be doing the spending? That doesn't mention the 2 trillion national debt that will be a massive millstone round our economic recovery. Thirteen years of Labour has left a devastating legacy.

Yes and I for one hope it gets worse. Those that voted for Labour especially getting the shit end of the stick. Good times ahead.

The headline should read: "More empty shops planned for Ashton"

Wow this is just what Ashton needs... yet more space for empty units and pound shops!
