Vandals put hundreds of lives at risk when they threw bricks at passing trains in Mossley. Two trains were attacked in the same area as they travelled to and from Manchester.
Both incidents happened in the afternoon and early evening of Sunday 30 May at Scout Tunnell near to Spring Bank Lane in Mossley and are now being investigated by British Transport Police.
The first train was struck by bricks at 4.02pm as it was travelling from Manchester Airport to Newcastle. Bricks were thrown from the bridge that runs over the rail line which then hit the train causing significant damage to the windscreen.
The second train, which was travelling from York to Manchester Piccadilly, was hit at around 7.40pm and again the bricks caused major damage to the windscreen.
It has been estimated that the repairs to both trains will cost in excess of £5,000.
Police Sergeant Mark Rowe, of British Transport Police, said: "I cannot emphasise strongly enough the dangers associated with this type of crime. Luckily no-one was injured on this occasion, but there is always potential for a serious incident or injury being caused by missiles colliding with trains.
"I am appealing to any members of the public who were on the train or in the Spring Bank Lane area, and may have information that could help with our enquiries to come forward."

What sort of nutters could throw a brick at a moving train? If caught they should be tarred and feathered.
