Britain's wildlife is being pushed to "the brink of a crisis" as sub-zero temperatures continue to grip the nation, according to conservationists.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is organising emergency feeding of several threatened species, including bitterns and cirl buntings.
The RSPB is also asking people to feed garden birds, which are struggling to find food in the freezing weather.
The harsh winter could hit bird numbers "for many years to come", they warn. BBC.
Garden birds are getting desperate for food, if you care for nature please put food out for them. I have had all manner of unusual garden visitors over the last 24 hours. The most unusual being a very aggressive Fieldfare. It is a stunning bird to look at - but it has a strong dislike for Blackbirds and is bullying my regular Blackbirds who are chased off the minute they land in the garden. Quite surprisingly Robin Redbreasts are also aggressive. I have a pair who dominate the feeder table and protect it from Sparrow’s like a pair of trained attack dogs. It is normally difficult to get close enough to take photographs like the ones above, but it is obvious the birds are prepared to compromise their safety and shyness in an effort to get food. If you put seed out for Robins and Sparrows, nuts for Blue Tits and apples and pears for Blackbirds and Thrushes and fat balls for Jackdaws and Magpies you will be amazed at the activity in your garden and you will feel better in yourself knowing you have helped your garden visitors survive these difficult times. As an RSPB member I endorse this. We should all do our bit to look after Britain's garden birds.
Thank you, I cannot believe how aggressive the Fieldfare is towards blackbirds. He appears to have set up home in the garden as he was there again on ‘guard duty’ all day today.
