On Monday 16th Feb Roy West, British National Party candidate for the Dukinfield ward of Tameside MBC appeared before Tameside magistrates court and admitted to a racially aggravated public order offence. The judge is said to have commented that he “regretted” he had no power to impose a sentence other than a conditional discharge or a fine - a comment which lead witnesses to believe that Mr West was going to be found guilty regardless of evidence presented. Mr West was fined and in addition he was ordered to pay compensation to his victim and court costs. It is said a Tameside Advertiser reporter and a Labour Party official were in jubilant mood upon hearing the news which effectively eliminates Roy West from the political scene in Tameside. Any eye witness accounts of the days events and the exact nature of Mr West's crime would be greatly appreciated. TC

THE annual influx of migrant workers into the Westcountry has rocketed by 260 per cent in the last five years, sparking claims of an immigration system which is "out of control".
