Today I witnessed what had to be the worst traffic jam in many years on the A628. Thankfully I was travelling from the M67 towards Sheffield and avoided getting stuck. The queuing traffic tailed back as far as Woodhead and the amazing thing was - there was no obvious cause. I did not see any accidents or broken down vehicles. I sincerely hope the congestion was not caused by the traffic lights being programmed to create congestion as a way of fooling the gullible into believing a congestion charge is the key to solving the traffic nightmares on the roads. Red Ken famously had the traffic lights rigged in London as a way of highlighting that a congestion charge was necessary. When the charge was introduced the lights were put back to normal and - hey presto! The congestion eased and Red Ken’s tax was hailed a success.
A disturbing thing I noticed today was the amount of motorists risking their own lives and more importantly innocent road users lives by recklessly doing three point turns on lethal parts of the A628. Many moons ago when I passed my driving test the rule regarding double white lines was no overtaking and no stopping. The A628 quite rightly has lots of double white lines because it is a treacherous road with many sharp bends. I could not believe the lunacy of some of the people doing totally illegal manoeuvres, regardless of the double white lines and risking major pile ups with traffic travelling in the opposite direction. It was one of those days when I would have loved to have been a police officer.
