Industrial Landscape, Ashton-under-Lyne by L.S. Lowry

It seems likely that this wonderful Lowry painting will be sold off by cash strapped Bradford Council to fund front line services as the council struggles to deal with another round of deep spending cuts.

Bradford painter David Hockney is so angered about the possible sell-off that he is threatening to 'give up' on Bradford should the sale go ahead.

I wonder if Tameside Council would consider buying this painting if it does come onto the market? Surely there would be no better place for this picture to be housed considering the subject matter and the fact that L.S. Lowry spent much of his life living in Tameside? And seeing as Bradford council are struggling financially maybe they would be open to offers which could mean it is sold at a knock-down price.

Interesting choice of words from a senior elected politicians.

I like that fellow, he is prepared to take flak for what he believes in. What a shame that that is such a rare quality in politicians.

Lowry's Daisy Nook sold for 3.8 million in 2007, and others have sold for as much as 5.6 million. Whatever this one's worth I doubt TMBC will be able to afford it.

Anyone who likes Northern themed art should check out Hyde's Trevor Grimshaw who did some wonderful haunting paintings of local landscapes.

Others include Theodore Major, Robin Sharples, Dave Hartley, Helen Clapcott and Roger Hampson.

You know I never even heard of Trevor Grimshaw until I read this. What a talented man and what a sad ending.

Marc Grimshaw said...

Marc Grimshaw is my favourite northern painter. His pictures are a bit like colourised photos and (like Roger Hampson) have a warmer atmospheric feel than some of the more bleak images.

'Wonderful Lowry' that's a matter of opinion. A massively over-rated and chronically limited artist who benefitted from becoming fashionable at a time when few artists came from and painted that part of Britain.
I recommend John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893), (although he didn't paint exclusively northern/industrial scenes) from Leeds, painted some superb townscapes and landscapes of Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds, Yorkshire etc.

The Lowry Debate said...

Lowry wasn't everyone's cup of tea. He was talented AND distinctive in his style, whereas Atkinson Grimshaw was much more conventional though probably a greater talent.

Neanderthals eventually died out, they left behind bits of their genetic heritage because they occasionally interbred with modern humans. The research team estimates that between 1.5 and 2.1 percent of the genomes of modern non-Africans can be traced to Neanderthals.

Press banned from council 'Golliwog hearing' said...

A hearing into a councillor’s comments that golliwogs are not racist will take place behind closed doors.

Brighton and Hove city councillor Dawn Barnett, pictured, is to be hauled in front of the local authority’s standards board after a complaint from a member of the public.

It is alleged that the Conservative politician brought her office into disrepute when she made the statement.

No specific reason was given for the ban.

(brought her office into disrepute for stating an absolute fact - welcome to the Orwellian nightmare)

I've always preferred photography to painting. Check out the stunning northern England images of John Bulmer, capturing the tail end of a disappearing world in the 60s and 70s.

The report on 6pm BBC Radio 4 news about the conviction of the Lee Rigby killers can only be described as disgusting. They were almost justifying the event by the time the report had ended. What vile traitors infest that once great institution.

Sub-Saharan Africans seem to have a natural affinity for Islam (especially certain parts of it) judging by the rate of its spread in the lower half of the Dark Continent.

London's virtually f***ed and can only be saved by a thorough cleansing.
On Britain's current course we Brits will wake up to a nightmare in a few years, where the early 2000s will be looked upon as the good old days (which in many ways will be true compared to the scale and horror of what might be coming).
If things are turned round (and there are literally only a few years to do it) we must remember who the traitors in power are and show them not one scintilla of mercy.

@ 18:30

That would be because (unlike Christianity) Islam is not perceived as the white man's religion, despite the fact that it is of the Middle Est.

And it would also be because Islam is perceived as a masculine religion which extols such virtues as strength in battle. Christianity on the other hand is(fundamentally) a feminine religion which extols meekness and pacifism.

It offers salvation in return for spineless servility, and unlike its rivals that offer similar, it is neither picky about who it accepts (you dont have to be part of a "chosen people") nor expects its followers to renounce violence or suffer insults.

In a world of violence and poverty, I can see why the promise of paradise for mindless devotion and stimulation of impulses appeals.

One must note that, Christianity, Islam and Judaism all demand their followers to serve and follow the rules of one supposedly all powerful god, each of them demands of its followers to seize the entire world for this god, be it through proselytising, war or deception.
Law forbids me to express my true opinions on the matter, but the origin and spread of these artificial religions is something to be investigated thoroughly.
You will find a story of a megalomaniac god created by the hubris of a small megalomaniac tribe seeking to conquer its rivals.
Even Yahweh,or whatever his original name was, was one god amongst many worshipped in the middle east. If anthropomorphised you could well imagine him as the eponymous character of the film 'Scarface'

Link spamming is trying to get a backlink to your website from another site by using meaningless comments. Backlinks are one method to improve your sites position in the search engines but it takes time and plenty of them.

A genuine comment that makes sense is the accepted and proper way to gain a backlink.

@ 19:15, Islam also extols: killing, lots of it (read the Koran); the suppression of women; moronic, blind following of dogma (easier than thinking for yourself and takes away personal responsibility); fatalism; the suppression of reason and reasoning; the suppression of the desire for progress, technological and otherwise (if the answers are already written down in the 'manual' i.e.Koran, why bother doing all that hard thinking for yourself and coming up with 'outside the box' new ideas - this also applies in lesser ways to other religion's literature - ); suppression of dissent; suppression of independent thought.

These tenets are more attractive to some than others.

I'm really not interested in what Islam represents. It's for Arabs to decide what ways and religions to adopt, and if Africans or anyone else want to copy them then (as a native European) that's none of my affair either. If idiots within our kind wish to import such peoples and religions and the general populace is either supportive or too indifferent then nature demands that the price eventually be paid. Simple as that really.

My only concern is that in the fullness of time some of my own kind around the globe manage to resist the onslaught and survive. If in 500 years just a few thousand whites remain on this planet then all is well so long as they're a worthwhile bunch committed to long term survival. The job of saving the majority I leave to such dimwits as 'British Nationalists' who are still doggedly committed to fighting a losing battle.

Tory councillor, 72, ordered to undertake diversity training for claiming golliwogs are 'nostalgic not racist' said...

A Conservative councillor is to undergo diversity training after offending ethnic minorities with her claim that golliwogs are 'nostalgic, not racist'.

Cllr Dawn Barnett was found guilty of bringing Brighton and Hove City Council into disrepute with her remarks.

In August, Cllr Barnett said she thought golliwogs were 'nostalgic, not racist'.

And she dismissed complaints against a city homestore selling golliwog placemats as 'political correctness gone too far'.

However, a panel of three fellow councillors cleared the 72-year-old of failing to treat others with respect and breaching the Equalities Act.

The board - sitting in a closed hearing on Thursday - also recommended that all councillors should undergo diversity training in the future.

Her comments provoked four 'separate but similar' complaints from three people and the council's Black and Minority Ethnic Workers' Forum.
