What ever happened to Staly Vegas?
Last time I visited Stalybridge town centre during the hours of darkness it was to pick my daughter up from a kids disco at a place called Pad. Back then visiting 'Stalyvegas' was like visiting the Tameside equivalent of Benidorm - all that was missing were the palm trees and Sticky Vicky.
Many local traders objected to the transformation of Stalybridge town centre from a fairly typical small town centre into a town centre dominated by bars and other establishments catering for the droves who descended upon the town centre to enjoy the night-life.
With the proliferation of pubs and bars the inevitable arrival of drunkenness and violence soon followed and soon the Stalybridge night-life scene was in the news for all the wrong kinds of reasons, but nevertheless I was shocked when I ventured into the town centre at 10pm last night to find it virtually deserted.
It appears that Staly Vegas is no more as the two images above seem to confirm - and they were taken just after 10pm on a Friday night, imagine what it must be like on a wet Tuesday night?
