Sinkholes galore

One in Stalybridge and another in Abbey Hey. The Stalybridge sink-hole/road collapse happened around 8pm last night and at 8am the previous morning a large sink-hole opened in Abbey Hey, luckily there were no injuries at either incident. I have no idea what causes sink-holes but I wouldn't be surprised if heavy rain overwhelming the drains was a contributing factor. BBC News

Blame the people who carry out road works. If you look you will see there has been recent work done on that road. They never give any solid guarantee that they will leave the road in a fit state. That is why you can't get cable on my street I won't let them lay cables on my part that I own.

...If I remember rightly I was offered a 12 month guarantee. I'd be seriopusly out of pocket.

The TMBC lads will need a big bucket of tarmac to fill that hole.

The main problem in Tameside is that it is full of and run by sinkholes, it's a funny way of saying it but apt.

Being in town often and with summer dresses still featuring, I've been thinking about 'sinkholes' quite a bit.

You got it right TC. The flash floods of late will put certain lengths of sewer under pressure. In places joints may be defective and very quickly surrounding earth can be 'washed' into the sewer itself leading to a sudden collapse of the ground. Before the usual cronies blame the council the responsibility for the sewers lies with United Utilities. But no matter what you do you struggle to harness nature sometimes.

No, don't blame the council for this, blame them instead if they try to institute traveller sites in the borough. Any non-NIMBYs on this issue may get some new 'neighbours' and learn the hard way what many others already know.
