Conforming To Stereotypes

If only some aspects of life were not so predictable and if only certain people would behave differently than you imagine them to do so, wouldn't that make a refreshing change?

I have no gripe with travelers/gypsies/pikies/tinkers or call them what you will. All I have ever heard about this group of nomadic people is negative so when I noticed travelers setting up camp on Cemetery Road in Denton I was not going to allow negative stereotypes to cloud my thinking in relation to this interesting new development in the locality.

Anyone who knows me will confirm I am very much my own man. How ever much the BBC tells me immigration has been good for Britain, this will not alter my opinion until I have researched the matter for myself and come to my own conclusion based on all the evidence around me. You could spend all day telling how Islam is a religion of peace or that Labour politicians are community minded beacons of integrity, but what you say will have little impact on me forming my final conclusion because as previously stated; evidence not opinions is what influences my thinking.

So with that in mind I was not going to prejudge the travelers who set up camp in Denton. Admittedly the location is far from ideal as it is in a densely populated residential location and the field in which the travelers are camped is a genuinely busy field used by kids and people exercising their dogs. The lady dog owners of the area in particular use this field not only to exercise their dogs but also to catch up on gossip. However, travelers are a fact of life. How ever much people may wish they did not exist the reality is that they do and that means from time to time they will stop and set up camp, but does this cause nightmares for locals or have these traveling people earned a reputation which they do not deserve? Other than the temporary inconvenience of having to share their communal field with strangers from outside the area will this travelers camp have any other detrimental impact upon the local community?

My immediate eye witness observations I am afraid to say are not positive. The permanent police presence (police by day independent security guards by night) may reassure some residents and unnerve others but that is of minor concern compared to the rubbish which is beginning to become very visible on the field and the stench from the woods which are being used as an outdoor toilet.

The authorities are really damned if they do and damned if they don't in relation to the toilets. They could do nothing and allow the woods to become polluted with human waste, or to prevent this they could provide temporary toilets on the campsite but then they would be accused of making the travelers too comfortable and not encouraging them to leave.

The situation on Cemetery Road itself is now becoming interesting because some of the travelers have set up camp there too. You will see on one of the photos that the cemetery fence is being used as temporary washing line to dry clothes.

I have no idea how long the travelers will remain at this spot but I do know that every single local person I have spoken with is extremely anxious about the situation. I will keep an eye on developments and keep my fingers crossed that this particular group of travelers do not conform to stereotypes and that when they do leave they don't leave a mountain of rubbish or a mini crime-wave as their lasting legacy.

Traffic police in a BMW have two stopped on our road. They have took one into the police car and and another officer speaking to the passenger of the 59 reg silver Vauxhall owned by the gypsies.

Far as I know every local council has to by laws introduced over the last few years provide a legitimate site for them to use.

It will take as long as it takes to get an eviction through the courts to move them but if they can't provide them with a site to go to then they could be there a while.

Hmmm.... ship in a load of third worlders from some lawless failed state and see how much anxiety you observe amongst the Labour voting Dentonian locals then. Manchester has been systematically colonised with truly alien peoples and how bothered is the average native about that? Then get a few cranks in caravans nearby who are set up temporarily (and probably native to these islands) and good old Tom Dick & harry has his dander up again. Doesn't it just sum everything up?

they came from Ireland do we have to house the World

They didn't come from Ireland they came from Europe. Gypsies were traders who traveled all over the continent and traded with the Celts. They bare no resemblance to the modern day tinkers.

If its an illegal gathering then they can be removed within either 24hr or 48hr notice i forget which. But they have to serve notice on the camp first which can be obtained through the courts quite easily.

it is bad when you are afraid to leave your home unattended just in case
the sooner they are gone the better

Scores of police cars parked on Cemetery Rd out of sight of the travellers. I think they are about to start the eviction.

Watch out for an aggressive little runt called Johnnie. He's about fourteen years old and well up for a fight. He come running up to me with fists clenched shouting "what's up with you, have you got a ffing problem" in a very strong Irish accent. He had a large set of white headphones on at the time but luckily his friends restrained him and he didn't attack.

Watched a programme about travellers on TV it said they are very clean, use separate bowls for washing etc.
SO WHY ARE THEY SHITTING IN OUR CEMETERY AND WOODS????

Another motorhome and a couple more caravans have arrived today. Why can't they just be forcibly moved?

drove past at 2pm approx, there were police vehicles and one of the offiers was on site talking to the travellers, large pile of rubbish pilled against the trees.the field is starting to deteriorate

Currently I can see twelve officers on site talking to them in two separate groups. If you think the rubbish is bad try going in the woods at the side of the cemetery where you will see human excrements and used toilet tissue everywhere.

Just been speaking to private security contractors who are cooperating with the police. They say the travellers are leaving at 6pm and they do appear to be hitching up their caravans. A load of their kids run over the bonnet and roof of the security guards van while I was talking to them.

There you go I said they wouldn't be there long. If it was a legal site they could stay as long as they like. As i said earlier the local council has to provide them with a site if they don't use it they can get an eviction served very fast.

Like all laws they introduce them to protect a certain community but when you look into the small print the council always get their man.

Just because they got Irish number plates don't mean they originate from there. Most if not ALL traveler communities originate from Europe.Don't blame the Irish.

Anonymous said...

..More likely they are Hungarian ancestrally than Irish.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if they have gone yet?

Anonymous said...

yes they went before 6 oclock

Any know which way they were heading.

I've heard nothing but bad about Irish travellers and far worse about the Roma. In my mind both confirm to me that the UK is a big landfill for the people all the other countries don't want.
We get buggers, terrorists, thieves, deserters, chancers, paedophiles, murderers, all shipped to our shores.
Can't we send our rubbish somewhere in exchange?

bin wagons and road cleaners were out last night

Yes, security guards were parked on Cemetery Rd all night too to make sure they didn't sneak back.
