Strangles outbreak in Denton

Strangles or equine distemper is a highly contagious upper respiratory tract infection which infects horses. If you have a horse or know anyone who does it is advisable to steer clear of the Hyde Hall farm area and Ross Lave Lane in Denton as this appears to be where the outbreak is centred.

Stop them idiots ridin them like ther cars they don't pay no bloody road tax an they don't pik ther crap up! Dog owners do..

They should pick the muck up, but pay road tax?
It doesn't even get spent on the roads, it gets fed right into the pockets of greedy bastards, no one should have to pay it.
In fact if we were cannier, whole segments of the population would boycott tax completely.

Anonymous said...

Yes because all riders should ride around carrying a shovel and sack, be made to get off there horses in any form of traffic when ignorant car drivers dont slow down as it is and get back on! Hmm yes please make all riders do that!

And comments about dog owners picking there crap up. Its a law since dog poo can cause diease and blindness and is more likened to human waste than horse poo which is biodegradable and basically mulched grass!

As for road tax what about cyclist althou there are more cyclist than riders? It just makes complete sense!

Anonymous said...

Not surprised this place has strangles again it's downright dirty

You don't pay road tax!! Road tax doesn't exist its an emissions tax, hencw horse riders and cyclist don't have to pay it

Yea brilliant idea to the genius ^^^ who thinks the poo should be picked up !!! Now all people need while riding an animal that weighs as much as a small car and whilst controlling that animal through bridle paths where chavs ride their bikes and the lovely dog walkers hand their shit that they have so kindly bagged up and then hung from the nearest tree or fence !!! ( thank you thoughtfull dog user ) is a massive shovel on your back and a wheeli bin liner big enough for the bio degradable !!!! Horse shit !! ^^^^^^ idiot .
And for the other fool ! Who says Hyde is is shit .. Bet u still walk through it for your leisurely Sunday walk ? Or to bring your dog down for a crap ! So your garden stays nice and clean ... Well done !!!

I am on hyde hall and have been for 2 years! not pointing a finger but its someone over the bridge who is buying horses from auctions all the time and bringing them on n off so Sheila who owns it needs to stop this person from bringing these infected horses on as its not fair on people who take care of their horses!!!

Anonymous said...

im also on hyde hall and have been for few years and I also heard about this women bringing on horses from auctions all the time! strangles is a very bad thing and can kill horses! people need to think rather than be buying to make a few quid!!! not fair on people who have horses on there

Anonymous said...

I to am on hyde hall farm and ill tell you all now its the best farm iv ever been on, this disease has been monitered and handled in an excellent manner. unfortunately its one of them things that happens in the horse world and if everyone abides by the rules it can be cleared and irradiated quickly.

Hyde Hall is in a poor state of repair but it is an absolute local historical gem and a constant hive of activity. The hall/farm is privately owned and is Grade II listed. I understand the family who own the building do not have the funds to restore the extensive buildings to their former glory and in my opinion there would be a strong case for council or lottery funding as it is used by many local people and it is an invaluable asset to the local community.

I attended a lecture by a Frank Brown who is part of the Tameside Local History Forum and he explained the history
of Hyde Hall and its connections to the now demolished Denton Hall. Denton Hall once stood on the site of what is now the brick factory on Windmill Lane. During the Reformation there was a priests escape tunnel linking the two halls, the remains of the tunnel are still visible if you know where to look. For anyone interested in the history of these halls I would highly recommend attending one of Mr Browns talks on the subject. He has created a highly detailed model of Denton Hall based on old photos and historical records and it is a work of pure genius. His talks on this subject are highly informative and also humorous.

With regards to horses and horse muck. Well horse manure is a gardeners friend. Spread it on flower beds and it is sure to turn it to bloom. Maybe there’s a business opportunity there for someone to go round collecting it and selling it door to door to local gardeners ;-) The horses themselves are very little trouble to road users. Most of the horses from Hyde Hall Farm are either ridden down Ross Lave Lane or through Denton woods. Most of the ladies who I see riding their horses are courteous and polite. The sight of horses are always something which children enjoy seeing plus they add to the rural feel of this urban green oasis.

Long may the horses and their riders reign in this area and I hope they quickly bring the strangles outbreak under control.

I agree with the person who made the comment at 11.47. Please show some respect. Strangles is not a joke, it is a serious issue for horses and their owners. The people trying to bring the outbreak under control should be applauded and I hope the problem is quickly eradicated.

some unintelligent people will use any forum to have a wine and moan, even though it is totally none relevant to the subject raised. Thank you Tameside Citizen for alerting people to Strangles. Its a serious matter.
As for the moaners... half of them are probably sat at home on the dole paying nothing but moaning about everyone else. If you want to moan about dog poo, horse poo or tax then go to a forum that raises that issue. This forum is related to Strangles.

Like abscesses with your lasagne then.

I agree, a lot of un educated comments on here and not related to the subject in hand. Maybe these people have a lot of time on their hands therefore they may be a little more helpful to society as a whole if they used their energy volunteering for a wothwhile cause.

Nice to see Hazel's brown nosed clients getting their knickers in a twist when they are no better than the rest, one minute theyre locked down in stables and the next their out in the field closer to the strangles and being allowed to ride as well ...but only to the green bridge ...yea im sure they all stop at the green bridge and dont go any further because they all do as they are told lol

Anonymous said...

Sad about the horses, and what's happening re the ongoing destruction of the nation.

Anonymous said...

They cannot cross the other fields due to the motorway. Derrrrr

Anonymous said...

The gyppos from brinnington buy horses everyweek from horse auctions, usually transport them in a transit van, and dump them straight onto the field across the motorway bridge, to mix with the existing herd. No quarantine whatsoever.

Ringworm, strangles, horse influenza, mites, are a weekly risk with each new influx of auction stock. Horses bought for £60-£200, sold on for £300-£800 a few weeks later. Shelia encourages it, Hazel can't stop her. The dole dossers love it at only £10 a week to keep a horse.

There's nothing "monitored" or "handled in an excellent" manner about this place. You only need to look at the number of people still riding out past the Strangles "contagion zone", and the sheer number of people moving off due to said outbreaks and constant behind the scenes dramas.

Anonymous said...

Hazel knows what needs to be done but it's a matter of dealing with it in a sensitive way to avoid a major confrontation with you know who. Those who have gone will soon be back when they know the £10 dossers have been given the boot.

Anonymous said...

Why are hazels clients still riding out then if ' hazel knows what she is doing ' as those horses are not in 24/7 . ??

To the idiot ^who said they can't cross the motorway ... Strangles can also be caught airborne """" der !

Strangles – the myths explained said...

Among horse owners, there is often a stigma attached to the disease and this can hinder quick diagnosis and effective control. However, strangles is NOT caused by poor horse husbandry or neglect – it is a respiratory infection.

Strangles is caused by a bacterium, Streptococcus equi, which is spread from horse to horse and via tools, equipment, tack, owners and their clothing. Shared water troughs are also a common source of infection. It is NOT an airborne disease.

Transmission of strangles requires fairly close contact between infected and susceptible horses. Spread can also occur through shared water troughs and/or mechanical spread through personnel and grooming kit etc.

The incubation period, that is, the period between infection and signs being evident varies from seven to 14 days, though up to 21 days has been reported.

The main source of infection is carrier animals, but the bacteria can survive for long periods (up to nine weeks) on wood if conditions of temperature and humidity are optimal.

After infection, most animals will eliminate the bacteria fairly quickly, however, a significant proportion, perhaps 5-10 per cent may not eliminate the infection fully and become carrier animals. The infection often remains dormant in the guttural pouches (recesses in the throat) of these horses.

Good nursing care is the mainstay of strangles treatment:

Keeping water buckets clean and free from mucus (this mucus runs down the horses nose as they lower their heads to drink);

Keeping the nostrils clean allows them to breathe easier and smell food;

Encouraging appetite with soft, easy to chew foods that the horse is known to like; Pain killer anti-inflammatory drugs (for example, ‘bute’) can be given to reduce throat inflammation;

Strangles is not a notifiable disease
Strangles is NOT associated with bad husbandry or management. Rapid identification and diagnosis with appropriate segregation leads to quicker recovery times and yard movement restrictions being lifted sooner. Horses appear quite ill, but the vast majority will make a complete recovery. 5 to 10 per cent of affected horses will remain carriers of the infection
When the costs of an outbreak are fully considered vaccination may be a worthwhile consideration. One of the main obstacles to effective control of a yard outbreak is owner resistance to following infection control procedures.

Someone going to admit they're wrong by claiming it is an airborne disease ????^^^^

I assume you think gravity just thinks 'oh...it's strangles, Ill stop the laws of physics and just drop it right here so it doesn't travel in the wind'...muggins

Anonymous said...

Hope a lot of the above people don't have horses because they don't know their arse from a hole in the ground .. !
Strangles IS airborne albeit is is harder to catch this way but it can be caught this way !
So when u r Wikipedia your disease because you know nothing .. Dig a little deeper !

You don't make jokes about Cancer so why make jokes about Strangles ???

Some people really need to wake up and realise how serious things like this are.

Horses have seen us through millenia untold, never complaining, never waivering in their service, they deserve our respect. Just because frivolous technology has sidelined them for a century, don't underestimate those brilliant creatures.

I don't have a problem with Hyde hall in fact I grew up on there and probably spent some of the best days of my child hood on there. Nor do I have a problem with the welfare of the vast majority of horses on there who are extremely well cared for and loved dearly but I do have a problem with the minority of delinquent owners who slated and abused a local farm last year for exercising horses when riders from Hyde hall are riding past my house on a daily basis. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black !!!!!! Lisa worrall x x

I have heard it is possible to rent horses on a short term basis for £10 per week. Who could I speak to about it if what I have heard is true?

The person calling ppl from brinny dole dossers the horses in question that are infected belong to ppl that have jobs and are insured and have vets and were not bought from horse auction but from a private farm in wales so keep your small minded opinion to yourself our have the balls to put your name and get your facts right and we dont live in brinnington if you have any problems come and see me ask for DAZ

Emission tax,not road tax. And if it is 'road tax' i would very much love to see where it gets spent so your point is invalid. And as i insure my horse,i have as much,if not more right to be on the road, considering horses were a mode of transport long before cars

I pay the exact same taxes as you, and horse insurance on top. In essence, us horse owners always pay more than the average driver does to keep their cars legal on the road.

Anonymous said...

Hahahahahahahhahha what a nob u are flower why don't u take the horse shit home to fertilise your flowers horse shit isn't toxic like dog shit is and actually we pay insurance we don't pay road tax as they don't cause pollution

Why should we slow down, it's a horse it doesn't belong a road!!!

Believe it or not horses were here millennia before polluting cars which are rapidly depleting the oil supplies on which most of our modern life relies, from pharmaceuticals to the clothes on the both riders and drivers' backs. In the 50s and 60s good gardeners would clear up horse muck which is good for the roses but nowadays would take their lives in their hands due to speeding motorists. Horse dropping are much less polluting than dog poop by the way.

Really good drivers slow down for horses and riders, don't sound their horns and once they are past don't rev their engines.

Unknown said...

pick the muck up?? bahahaha, yep ride with a ruddy great shovel and carry it home! It's a great fertilizer, get a life and find something worthwhile to moan about!!! They have a legal right to take as much room on the road as a car.

Anonymous said...

And why do you think we go onto the pavements. Because of the car drivers being dicks. It is safer for horse, rider and anyone around sometimes to ride on the pavement. It's only a bit of grass aswell get over yourself. I nearly step in dog shit everyday. I don't go calling dog owners ignorant because a lot of them aren't. As for the galloping/cantering, that is a bit rude however, you shouldn't have moved so late for it to cause you to jump you can see a rider quite far away unless they suddenly came round a corner
