Droylsden Metrolink public meeting

Hate to admit it but I agree with Kieran Quinn on this issue. Despite the nightmare roadworks the long suffering people of Droylsden have had to endure there is no doubt that when the Metrolink is up and running it will bring great benefits to the area. Here is me reason for making this statement:

The Metrolink helps attract inward investment.

In the early part of the19th century during in a period known as ‘the railway mania’ some towns and villages vigorously resisted when they heard of plans to connect their town/village to the burgeoning new railway network.

Some were successful in their efforts to stifle progress and as a consequence of their stubbornness which gained them a perceived victory but which they soon realised turned into a total defeat as they discovered that the world was passing them by as the Industrial Revolution boomed across the country.

Sadly for them, investors ignored their locality because it lacked good transport links. In near enough every case these Luddites eventually saw the light and ended up begging the railway companies to build a line to their town.

The key to success in the Victorian era was good transport links. The better the links - the more successful an area would become. We have now come full circle and again transport is an issue which can hold back economic development.

Due to chronic over population Britain’s road network is now grinding to a halt - in a very similar way that the canal network did nearly two hundred years ago. The solution in those days was rapid transport via the iron road (railway).

As often happens history repeats itself and now the rail renaissance is in full swing. The advantage Droylsden and other locations who are lucky enough to be on the route will have in comparison to say Denton which is isolated and traffic bound will become very apparent in the not too distant future.

The short term pain Droylsden has suffered will be massively outweighed by the long term gain - mark my words.

Come on Westy, give it up, lad. The BNP is over, pal. Time to move on and get your life back.

Why not make a few more gardening videos or film a few buzzards like TC? You're stressing yourself. Get yourself an allotment and chill out before you blow a gasket.

Fascism's finished, mate. Griffo killed it. It's Labour now.

Your obsession with him is making you ill. You look close to death in that video matey. Take my advice and move on.

I don't see how it will benefit Droylsden. All the shops are closing and being replaced with pound shops, pawn brokers and the like.

We already have 216 buses running through the town every five minutes at peak time. It will cost a lot to use at a time when people are getting poorer and poorer and won't even take us to anywhere we cannot already get to by bus (presuming the roadworks don't hold you up for a few hours)

Denton Blue said...

For what it's worth Roy this is how I see it playing out and there is very little you can do to alter the course of history.

I think the time to make politics is between now and 2025. The time between 2025 and 2030 is for preparation to fight, and the time from 2030 to 2035 for fighting. I've said this for the last several years, and nothing has happened to change my mind. The precise demographic situation is not a vital influence. The collapse of liberalism, the collapse of the Union, rejection of the party system, the advance of Islam, and, most especially, action in the rest of Europe will be the key influences.

I have amended the article above to give the reasons why I think the Metrolink is good for Droylsden.

Mr West, if you would like me to delete the link to that rather defeatist video you have posted I will be happy to oblige.

1 mile between stops said...

Sorry Tc you've gone off the rails, trains were at the forfront 160 years ago because there was nothing else. Also Britain's population was much lower so trains were useful. The 'good transport links' you refer to already exist, crucially the M60, which has transformed travel around Greater Manchester and moves massive numbers of people every day. The Metrolink in comparison can only ever transport a miniscule fraction of the moving public in a very inflexible manner that can never match roadbound transport such as the car and the bus. Traffic volumes actually peaked in Tameside (and many other parts of the country in 2005), only the M60 has increased. So areas being 'traffic bound' is virtually always caused by TMBC's obsession with installing unnecessary sets of traffic lights, speed bumps, signage and other obstructions and obstacles to traffic flow.
The huge expense of installing the Metrolink, the expensive fares, its miniscule carrying capacity, the delay and obstruction it will cause to other road users and its inherent inflexibility mean it is part of the problem not the solution.

SerpentSlayer said...

Cant agree enough with '1 mile between stops'

I also think the Luddites were right to smash the machinery of Capitalism, they cannot have known at the time but mass production has greatly furthered the cause of globalisation and endured mass unemployment for modern day western born people.

Personally I think the nation state would do better if it consisted of small healthy folk communities as suggested by men like Alfred Rosenberg.

It would be the exact opposite of the modern day where people have no loyalty to the town or nation they are born into, where they are scared to set foot outside of at night.

I would say the comforts of mass production and greater varieties of food do not outway the mental and physical heatlth benefits of rural communities.

Anonymous, tell us how trams, or anything railbound, are going to solve Britain's transport problems.
2.7 million people in Greater Manchester (not including te vast number of visitors, tourists etc) and the maximum carrying capacity upon completion'sabout 180,000.Temassive expense, delay, obstruction and inherent low capacity of the system plus the fact that many better, cheaper, and crucially, far more flexible forms of transport exist mean the Metrolink is not worth the trouble and is NOT the solution.

Dear 1MBS, I feel you are speaking from a point of ignorance with regards to the mass transportation of people and goods by rail. I sincerely believe you have never, or certainly not in the last ten years embarked upon a journey where rail is your method of transport. Am I right or wrong? I am near certain my presumption is correct or you would not persist with your negativity in relation to both light and heavy rail. Trains and trams have come on a long way in recent years. If you actually venture onto one of these fine vehicles you may actually realise they are quite good.

If you care to investigate I am sure you will discover that all the worlds leading countries are investing heavily in rail transport as a means of dealing with chronic congestion related to over reliance on road vehicles. Take for example the new high speed Shanghai to Beijing rail link or the hugely impressive French and German TGV lines. These are capital projects costing $billions to create but the aforementioned countries feel the investment is money well spent as they know they will have a reliable transport system ready to propel them forward in the 21st century. Surely you are not suggesting that these leading countries are wrong with regards to transport for the future policy and you are right?

Tameside Citizen said...

If you still are not convinced let me run this imaginary scenario by you. You and I both have a meeting to attend in central London. We are both travelling from Stalybridge and we intend to depart and return on the same day. I get to Stalybridge station at 6am and you set off on in your nice BMW 5 series executive saloon at the same time. As you reach the M67 I board my train taking me to Manchester Piccadilly. We are both making good progress and as my train pulls into Piccadilly you are on the M60 approaching the M56.

I quickly alight from the Stalybridge train and board a London bound Pendolino. As I plug in my laptop and order a coffee you see brake lights ahead - damn, the traffic jam up to J7 of the M56 has just begun.

Before I know it I have passed Stockport, Macclesfield, Crewe and am travelling at over 140mph as I finish my PowerPoint presentation for the meeting. Meanwhile you have finally reached the M6 but things are not looking good when you see the warning matrix signs forecasting long delays ahead at the A500 interchange near Stoke.

Exactly two hours after boarding the London bound train I and 500 other passengers arrive in the capital refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Meanwhile, having passed the nightmare roadworks after an hour delay you approach the M6 Toll - damn, another jam this time due to an accident.

It is now 11am, I attended my meeting which went well due to my PowerPoint presentation I prepared on the train and decide to take a trip to the West End to do a spot of shopping. You now are approaching the end of the M1 and are soon on the North Circular Road heading into central London, you then realise damn - the effin C-Charge, I forgot about that and you have to locate a store where you can buy a one day C-charge pass. By 12 noon you have reached your destination but unfortunately today there are no parking spaces. Half an hour later you find a free spot next to a parking meter. By this time I have finished my shopping and am on the way back to Euston to board my train home. I know I won’t have a long wait as Virgin operate a half hourly service…………………………need I continue?

Tameside Citizen said...

SS, come on now. You seriously cannot blame the Metrolink for the closure of shops in Droylsden? The sad phenomenon of independent shops closing and small towns like Droylsden becoming virtual ghost towns is occurring across the borough and nation.

Stalybridge does not have the Metrolink roadworks but it does have the sad sight of many empty shops like Droylsden. The real culprit is not the Metrolink but Tesco. You chart the decline of the small shops of Droylsden and you will probably find that the decline is closely linked to the opening of the Tesco store in Droylsden.

1 mile between stops said...

TC, your hypothesis is based upon a false premise. Rail travel accounts for a tiny fraction of the moving public, road travel a massive amount. The traffic jams you describe would be alleviated by proper investment in our roads infrastructure. Currently 3% of of road tax is spent on the roads. Rail takes 40% of the transport budget to move 6% of the moving public. The supposedly privatised rail companies are running on a network that is so phenomenally expensive to maintain the taxpayer has to fund it to the tune of billions every year, an entirely unjustifiable situation.
Now they're talking about £17 billion to build HS2 in the current dire economic circumstances. This businessman's express is nothing more than a train set for the wealthy to use at the already extremely hard pressed taxpayer's expense. It would also carve through some of our most outstanding areas of natural beauty and even the train worshipping rail lobby are against it.
As for other country's, that's their business, we should do what suits us, and whatever the solution to Britain's transport problems, the extremely poor return, capacity and value for money that railbound transport represents isn't it.

SerpentSlayer said...

We are arguning about the pointless metrolink extension through Droylsden and Ashton arent we?

The benefits of rail for mass haulage or inter-city journeys are a separate argument, we simply do not need a metrolink in Droylsden certainly not when people cannot afford to use it (beyond the lowlife scroungers on the lego set they built next to the canal)

Maybe I was rash with my assumption about Droylsdens business' but you can't deny how hard it is to get into Droylsden at the moment. When thinking of where to take your family at weekend, Droylsden is hard pressed at the best of time to get a look in.

Dig up all railways and turn them into high speed motorways with the inside lane reserved for high speed coaches allowed to travel at 90 mph, for those who don't want to drive themselves. No HGVs allowed.
The carrying capacity, and consequently usefulness, of these transport routes would be increased by thousands of times. It would pay for itself in two years as the taxpayer wouldn't have to provide billions of pounds in subsidies to the rail network.

By the way can someone in TMBC do something about the number of traffic lights in the borough. One set every 250 yards is clearly nothing like enough, we should be going for 50 yards. And it's essential they're all switched on 24/7 to piss off as many motorists as possible.

Notice how again the media describes Europeans as if they are one monolithic hive mind. The media does this all the time, they describe Europeans as if every single act some people did hundreds of years ago is somehow connected or related to Europeans living today. I was born in 1992...what exactly do I have to do with the conquering of the Americas? They speak as If we living today were there at the time.

Regarding the presence resulting in death, displacement and marginalization, isn't that exactly what's happening in Europe? Think of the thousands of Britons alone that would still be alive had the non-European invasion never happened, think of the thousands of Whites leaving areas their ancestors have lived in for centuries because of invaders moving in, think of the thousands of Whites emigrating from their homeland because they no longer see the country they grew up in. The liberals will say 'It serves you right, Karma is a bitch', but again I'd have to ask what is it any of us, the Whites living today, have done to deserve our ethnic cleansing? I never walked around the forests of North America with a musket, I never marched around the continent of Africa wearing khaki, I am just a simple indigenous Briton who wants his homeland preserved.

You couldn’t make this stuff up, but making stuff up is what Nick Griffin has resorted to doing. Mr Griffin promotes narcissism, heightened paranoia and the imagining of the most horrifying monsters when what he is actually seeing is his own shadow on the walls of a cave. The description above of Nick Griffin also applies to a tribe of people of whom Nick Griffin has always been obssesed. Perhaps in them he sees his own reflection. He is trying to bend our minds to his version of reality, but his mendacity is becoming more and more obvious as each day passes.

Oil and gas are finite resources, rapidly being depleted. Prices are going to continue to rise significantly and this will place a heavy burden on both industry and private consumers. Furthermore, as we are becoming increasingly dependent on energy from unstable and potentially unfriendly foreign powers we are becoming ever more vulnerable to economic blackmail or even harm. ‘Peak Oil’ is a clear and imminent danger to our economy and society, so Britain needs to invest in new technologies and be broadly self-sufficient in terms of energy.

Hi all,

I'm sure you are all aware of the very dramatic events that unfolded in the Europeon Parliament on Sunday which saw leading BNP figures clash with party Chairman Nick Griffin.

Andrew Brons MEP was addressing a delegation of some 50 BNP members in a commitee room within the Europeon Parliament. Ten minutes into Andrew's speech Nick Griffin burst into the room and sat at the top table. Mr Griffin's demeanour, posture and attitude were aggressive and confrontational. It was totally surreal.

The devastating drama was caught on camera by a member of the Tameside BNP branch.

The footage shows Nick Griffin completely losing his cool, abusing fellow members including the BNP's MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber Andrew Brons, screaming abuse at leading figures in the party and generally treating everyone present with utter contempt. Mr Griffin made a serious of allegations against leading lights in the BNP, but was unable to back up his outlandish claims and made himself look ridiculous and foolish.

In the opinion of everyone present if the footage were to be released it would spell the end of Nick Griffin's political life for good.

Does anyone know if the film will be released? This is a question being asked on many other blogs.
