A council paid almost £900,000 to a private healthcare provider for beds it did not use, it has emerged.
Tameside Council signed a £50m deal with Meridian Healthcare in 2007, which guaranteed the use of 484 beds in its homes for five years.
In the past year there have been an average of 41 beds empty per week, which still had to be paid for.
The council said more beds were empty because of its policy of keeping people in their own homes for longer.
The cost of the beds was at least £16,000 a week, so over the past financial year nearly £900,000 has been spent on empty beds.
The Private Care Homes Association in Tameside, whose members are in competition with Meridian for residents, claim the council has wasted huge amounts of money on this deal. Read more here.

With the exception of the nomadic Bedouin and Tuareg tribes, most Libyan families possess a house and a car. There is free health care and education and not surprisingly Libya has a literacy rate of 82%. Last year Gadaffi distributed $500 to each man, woman and child (population 6.5 million).
Libya has a tolerable human rights record and stands at 61 on the International Incarceration Index, comparable with countries in central Europe (the lower the rating, the lower the standing – the USA occupies the no.1 spot!). There is hardly any crime and only rebels and traitors are dealt with harshly.

Riba (usury) is not permitted. The Central bank of Libya is a wholly-owned by the Libyan Government and is run as a state bank, issuing all government loans free of interest. This is in contrast to the exploitative fractional reserve banking system of the West.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that arrests of immigrants increased from 51,899 in 2008 to 91,324 in 2010, a 76% increase.
That's from only half of UK police forces, the others refused to release their figures.
The Metropolitan Police's figures increased from 24,364 in 2008 to a staggering 58,870, a 143% increase in two years.
Simultaneously the Immigration Service has closed the files on 500,000 illegal immigrants currently residing in Britain as staff are too busy to look for them. The UK Border Agency, which has suffered massive funding and manpower cuts, has been told to forget about them.
At least the BNP haven't given up, unlike you.

This story misses the real point. It is Tameside's lazy (or corrupt) PROCUREMENT practices that interests me. It seems they signed a £50million deal without going to tender, and they seemed to think that is OK.
Their 'defence' is that they "did not need to go to tender as no other care home provider in the borough had the amount of beds (484) it wanted to secure".
That frankly is not a defence.
In these circumstances it is standard procurement practice to split the requirement (484 beds) into several smaller lots, of say 100, or even 50 beds. This allows many other providers to compete for the business, and the price comes down as a result.
Tameside's stance is therefore either lazy, incompetent or corrupt!
Well I would say corrupt.

James, the current policy of Lib,Lab and Conservative parties are to allow unlimited immigration from the mainly White EU, whilst limiting immigration from other parts of the world. How is that not racist? Our policy is to treat people equally no matter what colour or country they come from. Is that racist? The fact we have 5 million British people out of paid work, whilst we have allowed 5 million to immigrate here is madness.
I had hoped for more mature debate rather than throwing the racism card at UKIP. As you know we have members from all races cultures and creeds.
Yes I want to protect and nurture the British people regardless of colour or relegion. People who have settled here are British as well. UKIP have a blanket ban on BNP and the English Democrats for one reason, public relations. They're terrified of being 'tainted' by association with the 'evil ones'. They must have many ex-members of parties like the National Front, BNP etc in their current membership but they won't expel them, and they'll be happy to take votes from people nationalistically inclined whoever they are.
Unless someone from UKIP is prepared to state they DON'T want to maintain a majority English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish population majority I'll assume their policies are fundametally racial.
I see that, only two out of the five candidates for that area actually live in Dukinfield.
Good point above, I've never seen so many candidates for wards they don't live in, from all parties.
Byrne, Gough, Jones and Lomas are extremely unhappy with Nick Griffin. They are desperate to see the back of him. They feel that Griffin is a huge millstone round the BNP's neck and that progress is impossible without new leadership. The candidates who are standing feel the same as well.
