Councils which are slashing frontline services have used at least £35million of taxpayers’ money to pay the wages of full-time union officials.
Figures released under Freedom of Information laws show at least 132 councils have paid for hundreds of union representatives, who provide no public service. Some are on more than £50,000 a year.
Of the top ten spending councils, nine are Labour-led. The true bill to the taxpayer is likely to be higher still, since authorities have to plug the gap left by staff who become full-time union representatives with other employees.
Local government minister Grant Shapps said: ‘These figures reveal how over the past decade Labour stuffed town halls full of compliant union barons who would peddle their agenda.‘The trade unions are sucking money away from vital services while at the same time planning to spend millions on politically motivated propaganda against the spending cuts.‘At a time when councils need to make sensible savings to help pay off the budget deficit, local authorities will want to review the merits of union officials bankrolled by the taxpayer and the provision of council office facilities to trade unions.’

Let me get this straight. For 2010/2011 8.4 union staff earned £336,718. Last year, Tameside Citizen reported that the same number of staff earned £227,469 for 2009/2010. That's an increase of 48% in just one year!!! Or an average of £40,085 per union gob.
At least we are one down with Yvonne Cartey from the GMB taking voluntary redundancy. She's now standing for the St. Michael's ward. She's been boasting around Ashton that she's bought a new house with her redundancy pay saying that it is wrong for someone on her money to be living in a council house.
So do these union reps think they are worth every penny? Who elects them there? Shouldn't council staff be paying for this out of their subs to the unions?

You have all missed the point.
If Tameside MBC pay the Union Rep's wages, where will their loyalties lie? If I were a Tameside worker facing wage cuts or redundency it would worry me that my union rep was paid by my boss!
