The end of an era as Roy Oldham is ousted as leader

Britain's longest-serving council chief is expected to stand down after losing a leadership battle.

Coun Roy Oldham, head of Tameside Council since 1980, lost out to cabinet colleague Coun Kieran Quinn when the borough's Labour group held its annual general meeting to nominate a new leader.

The decision is expected to be rubber-stamped and the Droylsden councillor sworn in as new leader at Tameside's next full council meeting on May 25.

Coun Quinn, who first declared his intention to stand earlier this year, is thought to have won the support of 27 out of 46 councillors at Sunday's AGM.

He said he was 'honoured' to take over from Coun Oldham, 75, who said last year that he may stand down but later changed his mind.

Coun Quinn, who was elected to the council in 1994 and is currently the borough's economic chief, said: "This time last year Roy had indicated clearly to the Labour group that he was going to retire and I was approached by lots of people asking me to stand.

"I can only repeat what I said to the Labour group, that Tameside Council's record of excellence has been based on 30 years of dedicated public service by Roy Oldham and I have been honoured to take that baton from Roy."

Coun Oldham, who was re-elected as councillor for Longdendale at Tameside's recent local elections, declined to comment.

The councillor was awarded a CBE in 2000 for his services to local government.

Earlier this year his constituency party in Stalybridge and Hyde voted to back Coun Quinn in the leadership race - a decision he described as a 'slap in the face.'

This is a sad day for the people of Tameside. I give it five years max until Tameside ranks along the likes of Oldham and Rochdale as a failing borough brought down by Political Correctness and cronyism. Tameside Citizen

Interesting news. One is reminded of the situation facing Frederick the Great in 1762 when his implacable enemy Tsarina Elizabeth died, to be replaced by her incompetent son Paul.

Are we seeing the replacement of competent government in Tameside?

Oh yes...whistleblowers welcome!

TonyDJ, you have fantastic knowledge of history. It is so unfair that knuckle draggers are destined for high office in this borough and extremely capable people such as you are sidelined

Don't believe all the hype. Tameside is about 40% as good as they want us to believe. They are skilled at box ticking and ramming the resulting accolades down the throats of the Tories, but don't anyone believe that TMBC is some sort of Tesco's.

If the new leadership concentrates on actually doing 'good' rather than winning accolades to brag about, then Tameside will enjoy a brighter future.

Oldham was WELL past his sell by date. He was considered a joke by the other Council Leaders he had to negotiate with. The fact that he enjoyed such a great reputation in Tameside only shows what low expectation many Tamesiders have.

Bring on Quinn. Stop Political Stunts. Set some high aspirations for the schools. Get some real high skilled employment opportunities. The whole region of Tameside could be on the up, not just the profiles of a few politicians.

As for Taylor as deputy? Oh fu*k. Anyone want to buy my house, I'm off!

Bye Bye Roy, you're right about Roy Oldham being massively overrated, but there's a big difference between mediocrity and rank incompetence.
Labour's local election results were relatively good, thanks in part to certain individuals, but the methods employed stink and it's only a matter of time before the truth comes out.

I assume tonydj is Mr Jones of the BNP. A bit overdue, but congratulations on saving your £500 deposit at the general election. Men of principle are extremely rare in any level of British politics these days.

Lets get something straight about the local election results there are bigger turnouts for General Election than there is for locals. When the locals are done at the same time like the previous time 1979 you get a bigger increase in the locals for labour than there would if it was just a local. For Labour to claim that it was anything else is not only miss leading but a damn right lie. Getting on to Roy Oldham Roy like him or not kept a tight ship for 30 years Kieren will not have the same tight reigne as him he is too far to the left for most peoples liking and things will crumble under normal rules. Some people in the labour group owe Roy big time for things kept from public knowledge and they stab him in his back shame on them

Roy has helped a good number of the brainless Labour cretins keep their places at the trough and this is how they repay him. The good news is the Tories will soon be back to reclaim the ruins of Tameside MBC when the neanderthal wreckers have been proven unfit for office.

Hang them high, according to the government's own figures 92% of all gang rapes are committed by Afro-Caribbeans. This means black men, who make up 1% of the population, manage to commit virtually ALL of these horrendous offences. The police should be using ethnic profiling to stop this, but 'community relations' comes way before catching certain criminals.
Many of our rulers and Chief Constables are insane.

Whoever it is with the obsession about the Dukinfield councillor is ruining this blog. Lots of people make interesting points relevant to the Tameside political scene but the constant nonsense alleging a childhood criminal incident over 40 years ago is pathetic and frustrating as the useful information is being drowned out by the same repetitive poster. Would the blog admin not see it fitting to suspend or ban this person before they totally destroy this blog.

Anonymous said...

It's only repetitive to you because you have not been on the receiving end of Taylor's smears and allegations, now there's a posibilty that this Labour knuckle dragger is himself an ex criminal. Being a high ranking Labour Cllr with a possible criminal past is a big issue. So f*** off to another blog if yiou don't like it.

Jim Stewart said...

No more repetitive posts, the same allegations about the same councillor have been going around for a long time, and not just by the repeat poster on here. All Mr Taylor has to do is take legal action or deny it. As far as I'm aware he's done neither.
The possibility that one of our highest placed elected officials could have a criminal past as a juvenile and an adult is a serious matter.

May we return to the main story, Cllr Oldham's demise as council leader...he's not gone yet.

It is the full council who appoint the leader, not the ruling party. And as we know out of 57 councillors 46 are Labour, 2 Independant and 9 Tory.

It is believed that of the 46 Labour councillors 27 voted for Cllr Quinn and thus by implication 19 for Cllr Oldham.

Now what if, come Tuesday 25th next week, Cllr Oldham was to "get his ducks in a row" and get his 19 Labour supporters to vote for him with the 9 Tories and 2 Independants. That would be 30 for him and 27 for Cllr Quinn.

I know how I would spend next week-end if I were Cllr Oldham!

The Bell's gone said...

'9 Tory', that just sums up the Conservative's pathetic performances under John Bell.

You really think that Roy Oldham should betray everything he has stood for over the last 30 years to try and cling to power by whatever means?
I think that says more about you than him.

Tameside Eye said...

Indeed David. I have written to all councillors asking for someone to nominate Councillor Oldham to remain as executive leader next Tuesday. Whilst this would be breaking the party whip, it isn't beyond the realms of possibility!

TMBC has done a pre-emptive press release saying Roy is to "step down", yet there has been no word from Roy himself. I think Kieran has tapped one of the lackeys in Tameside's sycophantic press department to push that out. After all, Roy is still leader until Tuesday. Perhaps Kieran is worried that Roy may just put in a surprise bid on Tuesday.

All I can say for your 30 years of service Roy. may I say that this Appropriate for you as they all stab you in the back.

Oldham has gone and is not coming back. Even he wouldn't have the balls to mount a coalition of such losers.

Quinn has a chance to do great things. The bar is set very low. The only problem he may have is having budgets from Central Government slashed....which Oldham saw coming but carried on spending regardless, taking money from reserves for his political stunts.
