Tameside Council under fire following the tragic Death of David Askew

Caught on camera: The cruel taunts of teenagers that killed man with learning difficulties. These haunting pictures show the extent to which a man with learning difficulties suffered 17 years of torment at the hands of youths, before he collapsed and died in his garden. A film captured on a mobile phone shows how David Askew's agitators would stand inches from his garden fence and hurl abuse at him. On Wednesday the 64-year-old could take no more and, as he tried to protect his property, he suffered a suspected heart attack and died on the spot. During the short film taken during a recent confrontation, a clearly agitated Mr Askew can be seen biting his hand out of frustration as he is abused. He is then mocked and chased along the pavement outside his home in Hattersley, Greater Manchester. As the pictures emerged a chief constable whose force was criticised for failing to stop the yobs for his death blamed the local council for the tragedy. Peter Fahy, of Greater Manchester Police demanded to know why Mr Askew had not been re-housed, despite suffering 17 years of abuse from youngsters. Mr Askew died in his garden after confronting a group who had broken down his gate and were interfering with his mother's mobility scooter on Wednesday night. While Mr Askew's mother Rose, 89, has praised police for the steps they took to make them safer, neighbours have claimed officers and Tameside Council did little to solve the family's problems and said the bullying killed him. A very sad story. Shame on the authorities for allowing it to happen.

A couple I know had trouble with local youths some years back.

The couple tw*tt*d them.

Bugger legality, defend yourself!

If you are ever on a jury during the trial of a 'vigilante' find them "Not Guilty"

These scroates live somewhere, take the fight to their homes.

Too many 'experts', do-gooders and busybodies, not enough PUNISHMENT for the scum that did this.

Tameside Eye said...

Why should the council rehouse innocent people? If the police did its job in the first place and banged up offenders and actually provided an adequate response to calls rather than letting criminals off then maybe this tragic death may of never happened.

I am not one to defend the council, but I think the blame lies with the police here and I find it disgusting that they are shrugging it off and handing over the blame to TMBC.

Tameside Eye, the problem the local constabulary have is the fact that if they did arrest, charge and lock up the thugs who harass people in this way, then the CPS (Criminals Protection Agency)and soft wishy washy liberal members of the judiciary would let them all out again to go and do it again to someone else.

The do gooders who allow this sort of victimisation and criminality to go on are right at the heart of the system, the lawyers, the judges and the folks at the CPS all backed up with criminal justice legislation that simply does not work and protects the rights of the criminal rather than those of the victim and the public at large.

It's a case of the whole system is biased in favour of bleeding heart hand-wringing and ensuring that the criminals keep their rights, but everyone else would appear to have no righs whatsoever.

I do agree that it's unfair to blame the council though.

i have yet to hear a senior serving copper acknowledge this state of affairs and, even implicitly, call for change, let alone resign in protest. Until they do I will regard them as defacto collaboraters with the scumbags.

Reimer, I believe you have said what a good many think. I made the comments I did, as I believe that the whole criminal justice system favours the rights of the criminal over those of the law abiding public.

It is the fact that the constabulary do not appear to even be interested in dealing with this kind of criminality that sticks in the throat of many people. Even more worrying is that we have seen cases like this with increasing frequency in recent years.

I too find it deeply worrying that not a single senior serving law enforcement officer has had the courage to stand up and speak out about issues like this and the disastrous impact these issues have on public confidence.

I blame the parents said...

You should all calm down the facts are this tragic family receieved lots of help from variouse agencies, they have been offered several option to move over a long period of time.
The mother refused to move that is her right the police spent many hours inside the house trying to catch the scum who visited the house CCTV was used to try and catch them, the family have praised the police for their actions,
This family are not council house tennants their housing assosiation have tried everything to get them to move with no luck.
It is a tragedy what happened over many years now this community needs to take a good look at its self and the parents of the young people who hounded this man and his family should hang their heads in shame they must have known what they were up to.
Its easy to blame others the truth is we have young people in some areas out of control and its up to the parents and families to sort them out.

Police On The Beat, Community Policing said...

Yes blame the parents, but that does not mean they should be allowed to rule the Communities through fear and violence. Community policing all but gone from our streets. Police in fast cars when they should be on the beat. Blame the Community Safety Unit at the Council for not giving a shit. Blame the parents by all means but save our Communities fron their sporn of hell off-spring!

Anonymous said...

How can you expect the parents of these little scumbags to sort them out? They are mostly drug addict parents that don't give a dam what their kids get upto on the streets. Do you live in the real world? you are probably an out of touch Labour Councillor. Tell the parents to sort them out, when they are Carbon Copies of their own kids.

John Taylor said...

The solution to this and other anti social problems is a across the water their methods work the they only offend once, they should have listened to me and used my tried and trusted methods I can gaurantee this family would have been free from the little runts long ago.

Anonymous said...

But John old bean you are in charge of community safety already you dumb sod.

Anonymous said...

Blame the Parents - Yes, the parents of the perpetrators are to blame here, but when the attitude of many of those people is that as long as the kids are out of their way and not causing them trouble, that's the way they like it.

The reality is that many of the thugs who tormented Mr. Askew and his family have had no good influence whatsoever from their own parents.

Mr. Askew's mother didn't want to move from her home, well, she shouldn't have had to think about it. If the Askew family had moved out to somewhere else, then the bullies would have won and would have found themselves another target.

Most of the problems we have with delinquency can often be traced back a couple of generations, where little or no parental control was placed on young people. It's a sad fact, but some seem to be allowed to do what they want when they want, and it's that attitude from the families of these thugs which allows it to go on.

We need strong community policing and punishments that fit the crimes being committed, not cautions and clapped wrists. Lock them up, lock them all up.

Nationalist said...

Taylor you're so full of shit I can't believe it. Either change Parties to one that believes in and will ACT, as opposed to talk, on law and order and massively increasing punishment or shut it.

Eugenicist said...

These people, and in many cases their antecedents, should never have been born. The solution is to 'debirth' them. If they cease to exist thay can never cause any more trouble.

Then why did Cllr Taylor meet these thugs that forced my family out of our home on Werneth. (Follow the link on my name) This is just a short CCTV footage of the thug neighbours shouting outside my house, the police took most of the CCTV footage of them. These incidents took place every night.

the genuine JT honest it me said...

Your all to soft, a good twating then tie them to a lamp post with a board round their neck make it clear its the last warning then see if they offend again.

Mr Askew was killed because the police don't give a shit about reports of yobs causing trouble on the streets. We will no doubt see many more victims like Mr Askew, because the will to drive out these yobs from communities is not there.

ok no kidding its me now JT said...

String them up, the little shit who lead this gang will be an hero on the streets with the scum who live near this poor man and his family.
Its up to the community now to decide who runs the streets up there.

Tony Blair has earned “hundreds of thousands of pounds” from a lucrative contract with oil company UI Energy, one of the biggest investors in post-war Iraq’s oilfields.

Details of Mr Blair’s dealings have emerged after his frantic attempts to keep them secret ended after they were published by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACBA).

The news has dealt another blow to the British people’s confidence in the honesty of their public servants and institutions, as the ACBA had allowed Mr Blair to keep the deal secret for at least 20 months.

The ACBA, set up to vet the jobs of former ministers in order to ease public concerns about their use of contacts made in public service for financial gain, is packed with former politicians from all of the three Westminster political parties and their associates.

It is therefore not surprising that they have never prevented any former politicians from taking lucrative jobs in the private sector. Earlier this month, the Government rejected calls for the appointment of more committee members from outside the world of politics.

Mr Blair is known to have made in excess of £20 million since leaving Westminster in 2007, although many of his business dealings and other ventures are clouded in secrecy, so the true extent of his earnings can only be guessed at.

However, many of his lucrative deals can be traced directly to his actions in involving Britain in the illegal Iraqi war.

Not bad for the leader of a ’socialist’ political party of the champagne variety which managed to bankrupt Britain and ruin the prosperity of the British people

Cllr John Taylor/UAF said...

The extremist leftist UAF street thugs — who are officially endorsed by the Lib Dem, Labour and Tory parties — have been condemned by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as seeking “violent confrontation” with the “sole intention [of] creating disorder” after yesterday’s shocking scenes in Bolton.

UAF secretary Weyman Bennett, who is also a central committee member of the ultra-left extremist Socialist Workers’ Party, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to organise violent disorder after his UAF gangsters attacked police and passersby.

The UAF is officially endorsed by the leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron; Labour MP and long-time violent street activist Labour MP Peter Hain; Keith Vaz MP (head of the Labour Party’s “Black Socialist Society”); expenses swindler Harry Cohen MP; and Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies, amongst many other MPs from all three parliamentary parties.

All of these politicians are formally signed-up supporters of the UAF and their names appear prominently on that organisation’s founding charter.
