One of Tameside's longest serving and most distinguished councillors has died following a short illness. Councillor Martin Wareing MBE passed away on Wednesday night at Willow Wood Hospice after spending more than 50 years representing the Denton area. He was 89. For the last 30 years Councillor Wareing represented Denton North East on Tameside Council, but began representing the area in 1956 to 1965 on the Denton Urban District Council. The widower, who has one daughter, was one of the borough's most senior councillors - highlighted by his position as the Aide-de-Camp and his loyal years representing Tameside brought official recognition in 2003 when he was made Freeman of the Borough.

A sexist bigot.
and war hero, but the knob that wrote the above wont know that.
RIP Martin
Out with the pleasantries, it looks like Kieran Quinn is starting a "Newton" style campaign with the Labour for Denton North East blog.
Funny isn't it that Andrew Gwynne recently did a parliamentary newsletter for Denton North East.
You see if any other party had started campaigning we would be accused of acting in poor taste. Not for the Labour party it seems. And the funeral hasn't even taken place yet... Classic!
The PR from TMBC seems to signal a good sendoff like the last state funeral we had - it put Princess Di's to shame. Get the local press to report on it and fluff up a sob story to get the sympathy vote. Oh and Tory voters... vote Labour because those fascists could win.
Mind you, I wonder what tricks will happen over the selection for Labour's candidate? You can't hide behind sending out a call for a by-election at 6PM on Christmas Eve this time.
Any idea on the candidate? I am told Claire Francis has been selected for Denton South. Perhaps a switch is on the way?
Our mission is, win if possible, destroy Labour at all costs.
'Poor taste'? You don't need standards of behaviour when you're 'morally' superior. Disagreement means you're 'evil'.
Keir Hardie's right, a far better representative than the criminals, thieves and fraudsters you've got now.
A disgusting comment by the anonymous coward who made the first post! Martin was old school Labour. When he joined the Party he joined for the right reasons – true socialist values, and a belief that the working class should be entitled to a fair standard of living and a life free from Capitalist exploitation. This current rabble that have brought disgrace to the Labour movement and besmirched the memories of our founding fathers and are not fit to have tied the boot laces of someone like Martin.
The BNP have never stood in this ward before but I believe they will in the forthcoming by-election. They have no chance of winning, but they can certainly play the role of an effective stumbling block for the freeloaders who are making a mockery of the Labour Party. The BNP should remember the depths to which the charlatans posing as the Labour Party stooped in the recent Newton by-election. The Conservatives never once attacked the BNP, and they fought a fair campaign on their policies rather than a ‘New Labour’ style campaign of mudslinging and smears. The BNP are capable of producing highly effective election material, if they were to aim their campaign at exposing the true nature of the interlopers posing as Labour, as well as campaigning on traditional WC issues – which they are also good at, they could effectively gift the ward to the Conservatives. Not only would this be sweet payback for their underhand tactics in Newton, it would help the whole of Tameside insomuch as the ‘Labour Mafia’s’ grip on power would be weakened.
Mr Blatchford, I am a BNP activist who campaigned hard in HydeNewton and witnessed every dirty trick the NewLabour betrayers of the working class pulled in the February by-election, including bringing in left-wing thugs from outside to put out 27500 smear leaflets and manipulating the Press to spit lies and venom at us.
We'll be campaigning to win in Denton NorthEast but an extremely satisfying second prize will be to gift the Seat to the Conservatives thereby giving the Tameside Labour Mafia scum the kicking they deserve.
The Labour clique that run Tameside have built their powerbase by using whatever corrupt, unfair and dishonest methods they saw fit, seemingly unaware of how many committed enemies they've made along the way. Over the next few years they'll find out.
"A sexist bigot."
This comment is based on a remark made by Cllr Wareing that something was so easy "even a housewife could do it".
This was taken as being a slur on women.
HOWEVER..Cllr Wareing may well have been ironically quoting a comment made by Maggie Thatcher back at the Conservative group. In which case shame on those who did not recognise the irony.
is keran quinn a member of opus dai?
