TAXPAYERS are handing over £28million a year to pay for kids in EASTERN EUROPE. A whopping £26million in child benefit is sent home by Polish fathers working here on building sites or as plumbers.
The rest goes to an assortment of Czechs, Estonians, Latvians, Romanians and Lithuanians, shock figures revealed last night.
And the total – sanctioned by the EU – will rise another £1million next month when child benefit rates go up.
At the same time 3.8million British kids are living BELOW the poverty breadline – up 100,000 on a year ago.
Shadow Treasury Minister Philip Hammond demanded that Prime Minister Gordon Brown “get a grip on this situation”.
He said: “We send £28million of taxpayers’ cash abroad every year because our benefits system is such a shambles.
“How on earth is the Government going to check on payments to children who aren’t even here?”
Figures, dug out in Commons questions, show 21,000 foreigners are claiming for a total of 34,000 children living outside Britain.
They get the higher amount of £18.10 per week for the first child and £12.10 for the others.

All EU citizens who live and work here and pay tax are eligible for child benefit.
But there are no checks on what they do with the hand-outs.
By far the bulk of the payments go to Poles, who collect £25.7million every year. Slovakians claim £1.4million.
Child benefit payments have soared since Britain opened its doors to EU workers.
Just six months ago only 14,000 migrant workers claimed the benefit.
But the number has gone up by 50 per cent since then.
The truth about the 'last of the big Mcspenders' will be revealed on Budget day when the total lack of flexibility left to a chronically profligate Government is made manifest. It will take decades for the financial chaos New Labour have created to be put right.
Immigration into Britain has added one million new voters to the electoral register in just two years, caused directly by immigration laws which allow newcomers to register without any checks as to their legality within a day of arriving here.
An analysis of the new electoral register just released shows the million strong jump in voters which has taken the total number to a record 46 million. A million votes is, as observers have pointed out, enough to swing an election.
The surge in new voters has come about because of the little-known law which gives non-British citizens full voting rights.
