Manchester set for congestion fee
Greater Manchester is set to be given the green light for a congestion charging scheme under which drivers could be required to pay up to £5 to enter busy town-centre areas. The Daily Telegraph said Transport Minister Rosie Winterton would give the go-ahead on Monday to the scheme, part of a joint bid submitted by 10 councils in the area for millions of pounds worth of Government support for transport improvements. The Department of Transport confirmed that a decision on the bid was expected "shortly" but declined to say whether it would be approved. A Department spokesman said: "Congestion is bad for businesses and people's quality of life. We are making £200 million a year available through the Transport Innovation Fund for councils who want to tackle local congestion by making improvements to public transport as well as managing the demands on their roads. "Greater Manchester has submitted a bid for this fund, which we will announce a decision on shortly. This decision will be communicated to Parliament first."If approved, the Manchester scheme would be the first large-scale congestion charging system outside London. The Press Association

It is interesting to not the Manchester Evening News hype up this stealth tax as if it is good news. This quote “Businesses and the public also appear to be split down the middle” is an absolute and total lie. The vast majority of ordinary people are against this anti-poor stealth tax. The biggest supporters of this scheme are the wealthy residents of the Cheshire stockbroker belt who commute into central Manchester on a daily basis. They support it not because it will mean more trains and busses for their daily commute but because their Range Rovers, Jaguars and BMW’s will be kings of the road when the ordinary citizens of Manchester are priced off the road.
This is a totally disgusting tax that will hurt the poorest most. If we tolerate this and take it lying down we will tolerate anything these filthy criminals throw at us in the future.

Every single person who voted Labour, did not vote or voted for the for the UKIP/BNP splitters are responsible for this. If you voted Conservative in large enough numbers we could have prevented this latest Labour tax.

During the council election LAST year (2007) I appeared on GMTV opposing the Congestion Charge. I also raised the issue at the Droylsden District Assembly earlier this year.
As a disabled person I will have to see great improvements in the area of PASSENGER SAFETY before I trust public transport.
Perhaps it is time for SABOTAGE!!
When we learn how the C C is to be enforced we take direct action...destroy cameras or paint over lenses. Spray our number plates with reflective varnish and above all else...boycott and ostracise those who enforce it!!
