Tories trounce Labour in Crewe. Will ‘Jimmy’ Purnell be the man to revive Labour as their next leader?

David Cameron's Conservatives today won a spectacular victory in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election.They seized the formerly safe Labour seat by a margin of almost 8,000 votes. The result, overturning the 7,000 majority achieved by the late Gwyneth Dunwoody in the 2005 General Election, is another savage blow for Gordon Brown after Labour's drubbing at the local elections. It is the first Conservative gain in a by-election since 1983 and the 17.6 per cent swing to Tories would deliver Mr Cameron a large majority in the House of Commons if repeated in a General Election.

I am beginning to regret not taking the advice of the poster on this blog who goes by the name Tameside VIP. Months ago he was tipping James Purnell to become the next Labour leader. He advised blog viewers to place a bet on this happening while the odds were good. Did he have inside information? The Spectator magazine recently ran a story on James Purnell becoming Labour leader. Others also believe this could become a reality. Would James Purnell becoming Labour leader be a coup for the people of Tameside? It would certainly put Hyde & Stalybridge constituency in the spotlight!

James Purnell is the former Chairman of the Labour Friends of Israel(LFI) which was his stepping stone to ministerial office. He also has the backing of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

This Goy is going places.

Who says Purnells seat is safe?
He might not be there after the next General Election.
Hyde and Stalybridge has a near identical majority for Labour that Crewe and Nantwich did.

Yes New Labour Freak
I do "say what i see" and i see your party crumbling away.
The point is which i thought was quite obvious is that if Mr Purnell doesn't pull his finger out of his arse (or somebody elses) then he may lose his seat.
The Tories will be fighting Hyde and Stalybridge and with help from else where this time.

The facts are thus:

At the local elections of 1st May, in the eight wards that constitute Stalybridge & Hyde four were won by the Conservatives, three by Labour and one by the Mossley Independents.

The total number of votes polled by the Tories and labour in these eight wards was as follows:

CONSERVATIVES: 9,225
LABOUR: 8,347

I therefore conclude that if these figures were replicated at a General Election, the current Rt Hon Secretary of State for Works & Pensions would be out on his arse, and would no longer have any reason to make token visits to either Stalybridge or Hyde.
