Sponsored walk raises £21,000

Fundraisers Daksha and Delip Mistry were stopped in their tracks after a charity walk raised more than treble the amount expected. It was hoped the 10-mile sponsored walk would raise about £6000, but everyone involved was stunned to learn it raised £21,000 for the Meningitis Trust.
The community event was organised by the Dukinfield couple, Uma Measuria and the Young Asian Recreation Club. The couple, who have three boys, lost their 11-month-old daughter Bhavini, to meningitis in 1988. More than 250 people, of all ages from across the country, took part in the event in Ashton under Lyne. Daksha, a senior human resources advisor, described the support as `phenomenal'. She said: "It went fantastically well and was supported by the entire community. "The money raised will go towards helping rebuild lives that have been shattered by meningitis. People can be affected in many ways such as losing limbs or hearing, and this is where the Meningitis Trust provides vital support." The Meningitis Trust, the country's longest established meningitis charity, is dedicated to providing lifelong emotional, practical and financial support to anyone affected by the devastating disease. Chief executive Sue Davies said: "The team behind this walk have been exceptional - they have put a huge amount of time and effort into making it a really special event for young and old alike, it shows true community spirit all for a great cause." Daksha and Delip Mistry are hosting a charity ball for the Meningitis Trust at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oldham on March 29. The Asian News
