James Purnell - Blair's true heir?

These are dark times for the government, but one man seems to be enjoying himself. Work and pensions secretary James Purnell believes he can succeed where all others have failed, and get single mothers and the long-term sick back to work. He talks to Jackie Ashley.................Who's up? Who's down? Often at Westminster, as in the old Kremlin, it is the small signs that give you clues to bigger stories. So take the question, "Who was chosen to open the budget debate against the Tories' current star, the shadow chancellor George Osborne?" By juggling announcements it could have been any one of a range of senior ministers. But the hot spot went to James Purnell, secretary of state for work and pensions. Another question: At a time when cabinet ministers are dodging the TV and radio studios, seemingly with nothing left to say, who comes forward again and again? James Purnell. Whose name appears atop newspaper articles attacking the Tories over a wide range of issues? His. These are dark times for the government. There is a jittery atmosphere. Purnell is one of the very few members who really seems to be enjoying himself. Other, older ministers are withdrawing into their shells. He is exuberantly using the opportunity to shine. His stock is rising faster than the price of gold. Is this man really the heir to Blair? The full item can be read at The Guardian online by clicking here.
The poster who occasionally uses this blog and goes by the name Tameside VIP was urging people to put money on James Purnell becoming a future PM. Does he know something we don’t?

Is it fuck.

Anyways on topic... I have seen none of these headlines from Purnell being critical of the Tories. Now I am a Daily Moral reader which to some would automatically class me as being racist. Perhaps they are all in the Guadian which no one reads... or the Observer... ahem lol.

I am surprised he allowed this article to be honest. I think Purnell would be wise to keep a low profile and not piss off Brown like the Millipede has done. The Broonites are too focused on bringing David Miliband back to Earth. Purnell is playing a dangerous game. He should not be too loud with his ambitions as it will piss people off like Miliband has done. Not a way to please the members. Look at Vaginal Smears and her deputy leadership campaign.

Brown doesn't like dissent in his cabinet. The Blairites are a dieing race. I think Labour are really regretting putting the pressure on Blair to go, just like the Tories with Thatcher. I was surprised to see Purnell in as a cabinet minister. Although at times I think that Purnell isn't a Blairite or Brownite, he is a yes man. Just so he can snake his way to the top. The problem is with “yes men” is when they do reach the pinnacle of their career, they have no one to say yes to and that is where their leadership skills will crack and then they will fall from a very great height.

Purnell is smart and he knows how to play the game. Purnell has lots of controversy flowing around him and yet it doesn't get picked up by the press or when it does, he spins it around. Look at the Photoshop – Enough to finish a cabinet ministers career especially one who made contradictory statements the week before. Look at Mike Doherty - Nothing to do with Purnell - Yeah and I would like to see the date and time of the emails sent. You telling me a SpAd would post a letter to the local rag? You must be havin a giraffe. Then you have Claire Francis, to which he was like flies near shit. That NI scandal had nothing to do with him, yet it was HIS letterhead which under election rules and blah blah means he endorses what is said on that letter. Notice that he has been quiet with Francis and Tameside Mafia said that Doherty had “resigned”. Purnell doesn't want anymore shit in his area. He can't deal with it and he doesn't have the time for it either. He just does a magical disappearing act. Purnell is the new Blair. Someone who is good with spin, but can't handle a situation properly. I think Purnell would be good for Labour, but bad for Britain

I hope the people can see that we have an MP who is more focused on upping his career and climbing the political ladder rather than serving his constituents. Purnell bought a home in Broadbottom for £50,000 only a few years back – You telling me this Yuppie twat would class a £50,000 as his primary household? Something odd is going on there. He avoided the CGT on his primary property in London. Yes, London born and privately educated Purnell, classes his main residence in London. He didn't even live in Tameside when he was running in 2001. He was parachuted in from London. It is a shame that Stalybridge and Hyde isn't represented by someone who fully understands the area. He is totally out of touch with the people he was elected to represent. TIME TO GET HIM OUT!

I have something which will shock Labour at the next council meeting and Purnell gets a mention. See you all there.

A brilliant analysis by TE. You are right on the ball kid and not afraid to say what needs to be said.

Yes Liam, and the good people of Stalybridge and Hyde voted us in. Live with it Tory boy. There is nothing someone as insignificant as you can do about it. Purnell is here for years to come and with a bit of luck he will be the prime minister of England.

Yes Mr. Anonymous he will just be the same as the Labour cunts before him.

Prime Minister of England or Britain? A Freudian slip by SPP maybe?

James Purnell is going to be Prime Minister ha,ha don't make me laugh who says you will be in power after the next election.
Polls and the bookies point towards the Tories with a 14% lead
The sooner we get these clowns out the better before they destroy the UK.
Ohh SPP or what ever you are called keep taking the medication

Visionary - Either way, Purnell could be the next leader of the Labour party. He could make a shadow opposition. As soon as Broon is given the boot, they will go through a cycle of many leaders all of which will fail just like the Tories did with after Major and the Lib Dems now. Is Purnell confident enough to go first and risk it?

Purnell as Prime Minister? Ha ha ha

He is cold, smug and has all the charisma of a dead sheep which is why his colleagues hate him.

Milliband? Not sure. The master race tribe don't usually seek the top job, prefering instead to bribe and/or blackmail the man at the top.

Those are rather big feet. Does Purnell have clown shoes?

The calibre of modern day politicians is very concerning. We are close to days of Rent-a-Government. Maybe Mr. Purnell could play the part of Mr. Claypole? Who'd be Miss Popov?

You are giving your age away there Mr Disco. I used to love Rentaghost too.

Well, up to a point, Lord Copper.

'Every follower of Tony Blair should have a catchy slogan and here is James Purnell's. "Work makes you happy," he keeps saying. Of course, this would not be connected in any way with the old Nazi slogan, displayed in wrought-iron above the concentration camp gates "Arbeit macht Frei" or "Work sets you free".'
