Street star loses parking battle

Council parking chiefs are refusing to back down in a row with Corrie star Bill Tarmey.Bill, who plays Jack Duckworth, was handed a penalty notice when his driver parked in a bay outside Ashton under Lyne town hall marked `civic business only'.At the time, the 66-year-old actor was appearing in a World Diabetes Day event at the town hall, organised by Tameside Hospital. His driver assumed, as he was on `official' business, he could park in the bay. But a traffic warden slapped the car with a £30 fine.A letter to Tameside council's parking officials from Bill, who lives in Ashton, failed to move them. They said the public often claimed to be on town hall business to try to escape fines. A spokesman said: "He was at the town hall at the invitation of Tameside Hospital so we cannot waive his ticket on the grounds he was performing civic duties."

I will ask the council to waive the ticket on this occasion on compassionate grounds because hes just lost his wife.
Even though the signs are very clear civic parking only.

Traffic Wardens are SCUM. They are the kind of people who LOVE to wear uniform and order people about WITHOUT the risk associated with being a member of the armed forces or the emergency services.

It's the old story, "If you want to do that job there's something wrong with you!"

In my book Mr Tarmey was on Civic business.

Oh, what's the classic defence one of these people is BOUND to use...."We are only doing our job.".. Sounds like "We are only obeying orders". Get a life!!

Parking attendants are not 'scum' they do a job that is unpopular, and should be done by the police. They need to do a good job of enforcing laws that should not exist or else they will not hold their jobs for long, to the detriment of their families and the tax payer.
I doubt they have a uniform fetish, they do however need some type of authority to protect them from people like yourself.
I agree that Mr Tarmey should not have to pay a ticket for what happened.
You should not aim your abuse at people that need to earn a wage, doing a 'created' job. You should be aiming at TMBC and successive governments that have brought these rules into law.
I am unsure of the relevance of your last paragraph, as I have not spent as much time researching The events of 1933-45 as you obviously have.

I know Labour councillors are planning to spin this into a photo oportunity.

Seems about right, for the people that inhabit the council .
In my view Mr Tarmey thought he could use the layby, however he should be aware that civic use really means DO NOT use use our special ZIL lane.

I would have to disagree with TonyDJ on this one. It is a long time since I have received a parking ticket, and the reason it was a long time ago was because after getting a £30 penalty for staying two minutes longer than I should have at a pay and display car park, I pledged never to get caught like a sucker again. If you asked me if I thought traffic wardens were scum at the time I would undoubtedly have agreed, but now long after the event I can realise that they are there to do a necessary job. In areas such as Rusholme or the A6 passing through Longsight, places where for some odd reason traffic wardens are scarce, the results are there for all to see and the results are chaos caused through illegal parking.

"Odd" reason? You know, we all now, the reason for this. It's because The wardens can't or won't ticket the ethnics, but they ticket their fellow citizens.

We now have "decriminalised parking" which means the council get the cash, so the scum have an incentive to ticket us.

Oh, by the way, one of the newer wardens used to be a paper seller for the SWP (Socialist Workers Party)

I wouldn't spit on one if s/he were on fire!

We bank in Ashton at RBS. (corner of Stamford st central and Mill lane)The Mill lane portion is effectively a one way street and is wide enough to allow parking on both sides, It is however restricted by double yellows both sides.
This has never been a problem in the past, as the authorities are aware that people collect large amounts of cash during the day and they need to be parked close to the bank for security reasons.
It is now a very different situation with wardens materialising out of thin air brandishing tickets, and soon they will be able to fine you without wardens, tickets , just purely from CCTV pictures.
It is time these people realised that they do not own Tameside. their job is to manage the assets they have efficiently for the ratepayers. It is not a job creation program for their sordid socialist buddies. Do they not appreciate that parked cars are the best form of traffic calming, forget humps, ramps, and cushions. They wonder why there are so many 4x4s, it may have something to do with them constructing an assault course out of half of our roads.
Now their preferred weapon of choice are 20mph zones. Have you seen the stupidity of the road engineers WE employ. Katherine st 20mph, Stockport road 20 mph, the complete F*** up that is now Denton. It takes me 20 mins to get from Hyde to Ashton every morning, less than 3 miles (i used to be able to run a 6 minute mile, 18 mins?)Do these morons not understand if you reduce a cars journey time by 10% you have 10% less vehicles on the road at any one time? Do they not understand that frustrated motorists take stupid chances?. Why are these idiots still in charge? why would anybody who uses the roads vote for the main parties?.Rant over.

Ah yes, the 20mph zones. Have you also noticed the 'fake' speed cameras all over Tameside? I can spot them a mile off, but it is amazing how many people believe they are real. The latest one to appear is on the A57 just before Denton roundabout coming from the Manchester direction.

Most of these cameras are not fakes, they are part of the Watchman system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchman_camera
These are genuine. note the footage of a camera being blown up in Godley, this was filmed by the watchman being attacked.
Why they are not issuing letters/fines I have no idea, except to note that this was cutting edge when they bought it, and knowing our Council there is a better than evens chance they do not work.

UKIP- I loved your comment about 4x4s being needed because of the obsticle courses which UK roads have become. Have you seen the chicanes on St Albans Road? Deadly!

At the risk of being accused of being a conspiracy theorist--or worse--have you noticed how many of these schemes are in ethnic areas? Katherine St and Stockport Rd to mention two that UKIP also mentioned.

If you think I'm exagerating try driving around Burlington St. / Layard St. / Dean St. / Uxbridge St. Heaven alone knows how a fire engine will get on with all the bollards and no entries!

I hear that TMBC fuckwits want to make St. Albans a one way system. They think this will solve a problem in relation to traffic calming.

About Speed Cameras... Did anyone remember Alan Shiteheads comments in relation to a certain renegade Tory putting up posters in Hurst saying "Get Whitehead Out, He's done nout". He said the images was taken on a speed camera. Sorry, but someone was putting up pictures at 30 MPH??? Reminds me of that cuprinol/ronseal advert where the bloke is painting his fence and the GATSO is taking pictures.

No not really.
The Katherine/Burlington/layard st area is an area with a high proportion of Asians. The traffic planning is mad, and must slow response of emergency vehicles.
The Stockport/Ryecroft/Oxford Rd area is mainly poor white. I do not see a correlation.
I live in Hyde on a 20 mph residential st, the other side of Market st is mainly Bangla with very little traffic calming.
I have no problem with residential streets having a 20 limit, but please stop the obstacles. The aim of A and B roads is to move traffic quickly from A to B, Stupid speed limits, lights, and road markings slow the traffic. This will give the Council a perfect chance to extend congestion charging.

Re St Albans this will add another 5 minutes per journey. About an hour per week you cannot spend with your family or at your leisure.
What is an hours overtime worth to you. You have just had it stolen!!

Now we have mentioned congestion charges I was at Droylsden District Assembly last week and listened to an interestinng presentation from GMPTE regarding the Metrolink.

It was stated...correctly...that funding for the building of the Metrolink to Droylsden was assured but to Ashton depended on getting TIF funding. (transport Inititive funding)? from the Givernment.

I asked whether this was the funding "dependant on the congestion charge" and the rep from from GMPTE replied that it did indeed involve the Congestion charge,,,,remarkably honest I thought!

At this Cllr Ged Cooney erupted! He sraised his voice stating that he had "issues" with TIF, that "Droylsden had the got the metro link and that was all that mattered" and urged that we stop discussing the Congestion Charge

Hmmmm raw nerve touched!

Thanks for that UKIP. As far as I was aware the cameras are not calibrated so they cannot lead to a speeding conviction. I know the Truvelo cameras in Glossop work and are deadly accurate, as are the various Gatso’s dotted around Tameside. The Watchman cameras could maybe be one day activated for real; but all they seem to do now is flash occasionally. But surely until they have lines on the road close to them, there is now way of calculating your exact speed? Specs cameras don’t need lines to calculate your speed because they calculate your speed by timing you from one camera to another. But one thing the Watchman cameras do is create a deterrent, as well as a useful set of eyes for big brother.

Got a marvelous story for you all.

A car was clamped by the DVLA cowboys for being untaxed and "on the public highway" just off Victoria Street in Ashton's West End. Saw it myself earlier today.

Couple of hours later the cowboys came back and unclamped it since it wasn't on the public highway after all!(Saw it happen. Delighted to say they looked sick as parrots, ha, ha, ha!)

Despite what we are told the cowboys, employed by NCP, were NOT accompanied by council staff or police. These last named groups of people being the ones who can tell the difference between private land and public highway
