After a long walk from Hadfield I arrived at the Woodhead tunnel entrance well before the scheduled 1pm start of the protest. I was a bit disappointed by the relatively small turnout, but I thought this was due to the fact it was only 12.15. Sadly, by 1pm the crowd had not swelled to the numbers I was expecting. I would estimate about eighty people in total turned up. I would guess that about 30 of the total were Green/environmental campaigners, about 20 seemed to be railway enthusiasts, and the remainder seemed to be a mix of supportive well wishers and journalists. Shortly after 1pm, the gentleman in the photograph above, wearing the orange trousers opened proceedings. He gave a brief introduction as to the reason why we were all gathered and introduced the first speaker, who was, Chris Davies M.E.P. Mr Davies talked about how he was on the final train through the Woodhead Tunnel in 1970, he echoed the sentiments of most there when he said the line should be reopened.
A number of other speakers followed ranging from Green Party spokesmen to railway enthusiasts. One railway enthusiast had a large pair of horns that apparently were taken from one of the locomotives that used to work the Woodhead route. All in all it was an excellent event and credit must go to the organisers. The turnout was small, but the atmosphere was great. I got to speak to some very interesting people, some of them at the complete opposite end of the political spectrum from I. The only downside to the whole event was the Stazi, sorry, police surveillance. Why on earth they feel the need to come to such an event and start intimidating people by filming them is beyond me.
My only regret is that I did not bring my video camera to film so I could share it with Tameside Citizen Viewers. There were plenty of video cameras there and undoubtedly some of the footage taken will make it to Youtube, and when it does I will post the clips here.

The police were filming a peaceful protest to intimidate law-abiding Brits. What a disgrace!
They want to make us feel that we're doing something wrong by protesting.

Billington is quite vocal about the bypass, yet I did not see him at this demonstration. Oh dear, perhaps he doesn't care at all.
I have been working from home this weekend sorry. Unfortunately I can't afford to take much time away from my work duties unlike some people...
Its a shame I didnt buy shares in a rail manufacturing company coz looking at the cut of those on the photos.............................................................................
Mr NCB don't forget without postal voting the BNP would have easily won down in Leicester.
What shares do you have Sean?
Do Labour really cheat when it comes to postal voting or is that just an urban myth?
No myth very widespread and will become worse. labour and the lib dums are the worst for it.

Is it true that a box of votes for Ashton Hurst were dropped on the way to the count?
Nope it was Longdendale, the police helped with picking up the papers. The box had fallen and the flexible plastic seal had not apparently been strong enough to withstand the impact. All very dodgy , but outside of the 30 day appeal. We will be videoing the counts from now on
You will be working from inside a cell shortly Liam do they have broadband inside the big house.
Get ready for an arrest this week for a local guy who thinks we are kidding then we will see whats on the blogs. take note it will happen.
If Councillor John Taylor is all for the victims of crime, then why did he have a meeting with the thug that directed a 4 year campaign of violence against that family from Hyde, its a fair question to ask John?
John, it is called opposition. You need to take a reality check. Changes are happening. Or is opposition not welcome within your communist party?
Must try harder than that John. Your scare tactics do not wash with me. I have the power of freedom of speech. Everything is all backed up.
CLLR Taylor get ready for a serious complaint into YOUR CONDUCT certain people have been watching what you have been doing for a while now.

Those complaints are a black mark against your name Taylor and that is whats getting to you."If you can"t stand the heat then keep out of the kicthen"
"IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT THEN KEEP OUT OF THE KITCHEN"
I wonder who's thrown out the complaints hey CLLR Taylor it wouldn't be an independent enquiry would it.
The Labour Party are good at these just ask Dr Kelly who was murdered
I have to agree with David. Why are police filming this peaceful demonstration. Do they really think Save Swallows Wood and Save the Woodhead Tunnel is connected to Al Qaeda?
In a way I am sorta glad I didn't go. God knows what they would want to pin you down for...
Liam do you think it will be safe for you to be at the council meeting on Tuesday,I understand some people may want to talk to you.
Thats a cracking new job you have John home by 16.01. Unless, no you would not be using a works computer on your first day to post vitriol would you?
What am I in for a fight John. That is so Labour like of you to do so. I have heard about Cath Piddingtons and Anne Holland's bust up. Are you going to release the Piddster on me?
I am shitting bricks.
