Police In Tameside Out In Force Against Domestic Abuse
Victims of domestic abuse in Tameside are being urged to take up the extra support provided by GMP and make this Christmas a safe and happy one. As part of Operation Redberry, extra specially trained officers will be on duty to attend domestic incidents between 14 December and 1 January 2008. As well as providing support to the victims they will also be conducting visits to Tameside's most at risk families and repeat offenders. Digital cameras will be used to record vital evidence at scenes and officers will be compiling 'bad character' reports, building the best possible case against offenders to maximise the opportunities for charge and conviction. Last Christmas and New Year GMP attended nearly 6000 incidents of domestic abuse and this year looks set to be even higher. Since the start of December, police have already attended over 3000 incidents and the predicted total is going to be around 6500 across Greater Manchester. Detective Sergeant Amanda Dorchester of Tameside's Public Protection Unit said: "It is not unusual to see an increase in the number of domestic incidents at this time of year. The abuse tends to happen more frequently in the few days before Christmas and New Year. " As part of the Force wide operation Redberry, 50 reconditioned mobile phones, which have been donated by Virgin Mobile, will be handed to high-risk victims of abuse. The phones can only dial 999 and will act as a quick link to the police in an emergency. Lisa Cogdell-Brown, Community Officer at Virgin Mobile said: "Virgin Mobile is pleased to be able to provide GMP with free mobile phones to support their valuable work with victims of domestic abuse. It is an area that affects many people, from all walks of life, and is a practical and straightforward way for Virgin Mobile to help the local community." Detective Inspector Jane Little of GMP's Safeguarding Vulnerable Persons Unit said: "There is a lot of work going on across the Force this Christmas to keep people safe. The mobile phones are a welcome addition to our activity and will provide a lifeline to people in their times of need." DS Dorchester continues: "It is all too easy for perpetrators to make excuses for domestic abuse and at this time of year there may be certain contributory factors, such as the increase in alcohol consumption, higher spending and families being forced to spend more time together. However, there is no excuse for any form of abuse and I would urge anyone in an abusive relationship to get the help they need and make this Christmas safe and happy."

Wife beaters and benefit cheats are bad news.
Note the the above comment has not come from me...............I wonder who it could be?
What do you mean Roy? Men, and I speak from experience, suffer domestic abuse too. Don't just PRESUME that because the poster depicts a woman, that a man is responsible. She could be the victim of abuse in a civil marriage. Be against all forms of domestic violence Roy, although I don't see the correlation between wife beaters and benefit cheats.
I would like to immediately retract my last blog on the grounds there is some dispute as to the validity of the writer of the first blog on this page. The blog, my blog, was a reply to.
If you don't want people faking your name then sign up to a blogger account!
I am surprised I haven't heard the regular comment on here which is "perhaps she deserved it".
Look no further for domestic violence than Tameside Council
Which gets covered up a bit like her black eye
There is a certain elected official that posts comments on here..........in relation to myself being a wife beater and benefit cheat.......there have been a number of comments........
Who is that councillor posting comments on this blog hiding in the shadows?
Steve Smith... the police will be on to you this Christmas.
Someone told me in the street today that Councillor John Taylor is showing signs of impending mental illness. What do you think?
It doesn't surprise me at all. Anyone could of told you that years ago!
Don't worry Roy. I am looking into a benefit cheat currently standing on behalf of Labour in Mossley.
I don't know how Taylor can call anyone a benefit cheat, fraud, wife beater or paedophille as the Labour party is full of them.
Rest assured, the Mossley mob will stay in. Tameside doesn't need any more Labour councillors.
We need a political Party that will put all its efforts in giving The British people an alternative for real representation.........We see our local communities at a fragmented cross roads, with high crime and violence, no faith in the police or very little faith in the law.......politics is very important to the British way of life.......This is something worth fighting for and putting all your efforts into.
