More than 6 million persons, comprising around three-quarters of the Palestinian people, and nearly one-third of the global refugee population, remain without a durable solution to their plight. More than half of all Palestinian refugees lack basic day-to-day protection, such as physical security, freedom of movement, and access to employment.
It is estimated that there are more than 5.5 million Palestinian refugees. The Palestinian refugee Diaspora spreads around the world. The majority of Palestinian refugees, however, live within 100 miles of the borders of Israel in neighboring Arab host states. More than half the refugee population lives in Jordan. Approximately one-quarter of the refugee population lives in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Around 15 percent of the refugee population resides in almost equal numbers in Syria and Lebanon, with the remaining refugee population residing inside Israel (internally displaced persons), in the Arab Gulf and in Europe and the United States. Approximately one-third of those refugees displaced in 1948 live in refugee camps located in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria
According to international law, refugees have the right to return to their homes of origin, receive real property restitution, and compensation for losses and damages. There are three basic solutions to refugee problems: voluntary repatriation (or return), voluntary host country integration, and voluntary resettlement in a third country. Of these three solutions only repatriation or return is a right recognized under international law. Each of the three solutions mentioned above is guided by the principle of voluntaries or refugee choice.
On the other hand, the state of Israel refuses to allow Palestinian refugees to exercise their basic human rights to return to their ancestral homes based on several arguments:

One day after the Israel army declared that it had pulled out and completed Operation Autumn Clouds in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, 24 Palestinians were killed in Gaza and the West Bank, 19 people were killed and at least 45 were injured as a large number of shells were fired at the town. Another five Palestinians were killed in Jenin, northern West Bank by Israeli army fire.
The series of incidents began at 6 a.m., when eyewitness said that dozens of tank shells and missiles landed simultaneously in a small and limited area in Beit Hanoun. According to Palestinian sources, some of the shells landed on a house, killing 11 members of one family called Al-A'athamein, including a nine-year-old child and a 73-year-old woman. Israeli sources confirmed that artillery shells were fired Wednesday morning. Incredibly, they said it was not yet known whether the matter was a technical error or a human one.

Exactly how the “student” visa swindle works has been revealed with the deportation of a Ghanaian woman who came to the UK five years ago, first as a tourist and who then claimed to be a “student.” Ama Sumani (pictured) stayed on to sponge NHS treatment in Cardiff, despite that treatment being available in her home country.
Sumani, 39 years-old, was taken by immigration officers from a Cardiff hospital where she has been receiving dialysis for a year after cancer damaged her kidneys. Although she claimed she would not be able to get the care in Ghana, a spokesman for that country’s high commission in London said the country had two fully-equipped hospitals in Accra and further north in Kumasi. As a member of the Ghana national health insurance scheme she would still receive treatment, the spokesman added.
Sumani first came to the UK as a visitor in 2003, but then changed her status to student and attempted to enrol on a banking course at a city college, her solicitor explained. Her lack of English prevented her from pursuing the course and she went to find work which contravened her student visa.
In 2005 she returned to Ghana to attend a memorial service for her dead husband. But when she came back to the UK, her student visa was revoked and she was only given temporary admission which effectively meant she was given notice she would be removed, her solicitor said.
She did not keep in touch with immigration officials and was first taken ill in January 2006. She is being removed from the country rather than deported because of her expired visa which means she has no legal status in the UK. A removal means that in theory she could apply to return to the UK in the future.
