Police provide a safe Christmas
Police in Tameside are clamping down on troublemakers to ensure that everybody has a safe time in the run up to Christmas. Operation Stand, a multi-agency operation, is running in Asthon and Stalybridge Town Centres and will focus on the night-time economy with police officers on hand to prevent alcohol-related incidents. Officers will be patrolling hotspot locations, visiting licensed premises with Trading Standards and working closely with Ashton Pub and Club Watch to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Revellers are also being urged to take on board some of the safety tips that the police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service will be offering at the start of each evening to ensure they have a safe and fun evening out. The safety tips will follow a different theme each week in the run up to Christmas. Chief Inspector Wayne Miller of Tameside Police said: “Operation Stand is about all partners working together to make sure everyone who wants to go out and enjoy themselves can do so safely. We want people to drink responsibly and act responsibly. “We are not there to spoil the fun but if anybody does misbehave we will respond positively and they could face arrest or £80-on-the-spot fines for offences such as being drunk and disorderly and urinating in the street. It’s all about creating an environment where people will feel safe”. The operation follows on from the successful campaign launched last winter and again during the summer.
