The Labour Party has accepted a series of large payments originating from Labour-controlled council money, a BBC investigation reveals. The revelation came during an investigation by BBC One's Kenyon Confronts into unelected power and influence in the UK. The Labour Party has accepted a total of nearly £150,000 of Labour-controlled public money through payments handed over by the Manchester Airport Group (MAG), since 1997. MAG is a commercial company that is 100% owned by the 10 councils of Greater Manchester and the biggest shareholder of the group, Manchester City Council (55%), is Labour-run. The Labour Party has overall control, or a majority, in nine out of 10 of these councils. Since all profits from the airport group go back to the councils, this is money that could have been spent on local services. Out of the total handed over by MAG, £78,000 was given between 2001 and 2003 and is listed by the Electoral Commission under these latest rules as "cash donations". It took two years for MAG to realise this money would be defined as donations and eventually ask for the money back. MAG says this move was simply to outline its position as a company that does not make political donations and was not an admission of any wrongdoing. The amount has now been returned by the Labour Party with interest. The remainder - approximately £71,000 - has never been returned.
The cash-for-runways scandal
Manchester Airport plc has recently donated £60,000 in cash to the Labour Party. This is an especially dubious arrangement, as Manchester Airport plc is 55% owned by Manchester city council, which is run by the Labour Party. Labour runs the council, the council controls the airport, the airport funds Labour. The airport company’s cash donations would pay for Labour’s entire local election campaign in Manchester in 2003 three times over. The Manchester airport donations scandal2.1 Manchester Airport plc has made in-kind donations that would probably pay for Labour’s local election campaign throughout the North West region. Between February 2001 and October 2002 donations from Manchester airport to Labour totalled £271,723.02. Manchester airport is now Labour's 21st biggest donor. Of this, £60,000 were cash donations. This sum dwarfed British Airways’ donations to the Labour Party, and would fund the election campaign of all 34 Labour candidates in Manchester in the 1 May 2003 elections almost three times over. (The maximum sum those 34 candidates can legally spend in totals £23,446.32, but this is likely to be more than Labour actually spends.) What’s worse about the Manchester situation is that manchester Airport plc is publicly owned, being the property jointly of the ten boroughs in Greater Manchester. Manchester city council, which is Labour-run, owns 55% of the shares and thus has the controlling influence. In effect, an airport under the control of a Labour council has made in-kind donations to Labour of over £200,000, plus £60,000 in cash, from money that really belongs to the public. Around the time of these donations, Manchester airport bosses awarded themselves an 86% pay increase.

Ask Developments seem to have a VERY keen interest in the local Labour party too.
Look at St. Petersfield and Ashton Moss. It would hav brought in millions for them. No wonder they are in favour of Congestion Charging, they could loose a heck of a lot of money if they oppose Labour.
So let me get this straight - these corrupt Labour bastards are milking money from public assets such as the airport to finance their own party?
We need a revolution!
Correct and BAA are one of Labours biggest donors and the Tories and the the Lib Dems!
Obviously money *can* buy you anything.
Quite a lot of people working in the public sector are also supporters of Labour policy... it's where you have a caggle of unions and get this unionist mentality.
I *think* one of Labour's candidates for Ashton Hurst (Lives in Mossley) Paul Douthwaite used to be a director of Tameside Council or some other related position.
Look at the quangos involved with Tameside Council.
Look at New Charter - A lot of the directors are Labour party members.
Manchester Pride - Managers/Directors are members of the Labour party - explains why so much is put in yet little is returned to the community! £80k it raised this year.
Name and shame people!
Ex Para
Like Liam said - they should named and shamed. Have you got anything of interest Tony DJ?
Ex-Para
Nothing yet....but I'm working on it. Let's not forget TEL and Tameside Care Group
Well spotted TC. Now what we need are a few whistleblowers.
So what if public money is donated to Labour. The Labour party is the party of tolerance, fairness and justice for all.
It isn't fair at all. Could this be the REAL reason why Sean Parker-Perry doesn't want us to sell off the airport.
There is a lot of Labour councillors who pocket quite a bit for sitting on the board for Manchester Airport.
TEL = Tameside Enterprises Limited. Wasn't Kath Piddington knocking off Simon Walker or something at the time? Simon Walker resigned and Mr. and Mrs. Piddington are no more!
Wasn't Simon Walker a councillor along with Mr. Piddington?
How very incestuous the Tameside Labour group are!
Yes, both your memories are working well...I believe at the time "News of the World" hacks were hiding in the neighbouring gardens to watch!!
Part of the landscape..ha ha ha!
"So what if public money is donated to Labour. The Labour party is the party of tolerance, fairness and justice for all."
You are chatting bullshit.
I have heard more Labour sleaze from Tom Pendry, Roy Oldham and some other bloke who did windows or conservatories knocking around in some pub chatting up random women a while back.
The bloke who does the windows and conservatories was sent down for some sex related offence and I am sure that was something to do with underage sex.
Anyone heard of the phrase "tarred with the same brush"
Hmmmmmm...
News of the Screws were involved doesn't really tell you much. It is a low paper.
The thought of Kath Puddington and anything else is enough to put anyone off their evening tea!
Anonymous - PAUL DIGGETT does not do windows and conservatories, he does PR for a Web 2.0 Social Networking music website. Yes a man who was arrested for net child porn is now head of PR for a web based company! What a shit PR move that is! Don't believe me then read the article.
Granted - He maybe a nonse, but he did lead a successful campaign to get James Purnell as a MP. I am sure his short time in Purnell's office would of granted the much experience for spin and crap PR stunts.
Or is there more paedophiles in the Tameside Labour party? Hmmmmmm....
"The Labour party is the party of tolerance, fairness and justice for all." Whoever wrote this needs to get a new head.
The Labour party is the party of mass immigration and illegal wars in the Middle East.

Some of you may want to have a read of the above, but don't expect to find it in your local Tameside library.
Labour sleaze! We could do several volumes for Tameside alone!
While we are on about "Labour sleaze" check my earlier post about the new "Tameside Community Radio"

The managing Director of the station is a former Labour Councillor who had an affair with a current Senior Labour Councillor.
MMMMM.....can't see much impartiality from this station!
TEL anybody?

ASK donated £5000 to the Labour party in June 2004, the only donation the Electoral Commission have a record of that company making to any party.
