Mugged teenager thrown into canal

Police in Tameside are appealing for witnesses after a 17-year-old boy was mugged and thrown into a canal. At about 11.50pm on Friday 12 October 2007, the victim left a local pub in Dukinfield and started to walk home towards Stalybridge along Caroline Street. He then walked onto the canal towpath, near a Texaco garage, and continued walking towards the centre of Stalybridge. He then saw a group of men in front of him, one of which asked him for a cigarette. He said he didn't have any and walked by them.He then felt a blow to the back of the head, turned round and was punched a number of times. The offenders then stole a number of items from him, including his wallet and mobile phone, while knocking him unconscious. They then threw him into the canal. Thankfully, he regained consciousness in the canal and managed to drag himself out of the water. He then walked to a nearby pub and raised the alarm. He was taken to Tameside General Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries and was later transferred to Manchester North General. The offender who asked for a cigarette is described as white, in his early to mid 20s, about 5ft 8in tall with short black hair and an oval shaped face. He was wearing a rugby-type top, black or blue jeans and black gloves. One of the other offenders was also white, 6ft tall, in his early 20s, with skinny build and wearing a white shirt sleeved T-shirt and dark track suit bottoms.Another offender, who was on a bike, was aged 14 or 15, with a skinny build and a baby face and wearing a black tracksuit.Anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anyone acting suspiciously around this time is asked to call the Ashton-under-Lyne Volume Crime Team on 0161 856 9262 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.

Dear Tameside Citizen

Why haven't you mentioned the ethnic profile of the third offender?

The descriptions of the offenders are the only ones available. Knowing the area though, I would say the third offender was almost certainly white. There is a real problem with feral youth right across the borough of Tameside and indeed the country as a whole. In my opinion, if these scrotes are caught, they should be charged with attempted murder because that is what it was.

Blimey! it's getting rough in Tameside. What with Anthony David Jones fighting Zulus, boys shooting at dogs in parks, rapists, muggers, and dangerous drivers running over pedestrians on motorways, I'm moving to somewhere safe. Taxi for Glodwick!

Call me the cynic, but I am sure there will be more to come out over this story.
