Balfour Beatty PLC said that its specialist healthcare concession company Consort Healthcare, in conjunction with HSBC Infrastructure Fund Management, has reached financial close on the 77 mln stg Tameside and Glossop Acute Services PFI project in Greater Manchester. The engineering, construction and services group said the project is part of the 'Northern Batch' scheme, which comprises both Tameside and the 136 mln stg project for the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, which reached financial close last week. In Tameside, Consort will procure the design, construction, operation and maintenance of new buildings on the existing hospital site, under a 34-year PFI concession contract. Facilities will provide both in-patient and out-patient accommodation, theatres, children's facilities, an acute hospital development, a new facility for older people with mental health problems and other facilities. The company said the works, to be carried out by Balfour Beatty Construction, are due to start immediately with overall completion planned for 2011.

What a great idea (for multinational building conglomerates) this PFI scam is. Correct me if I am wrong, but from my understanding of PFI, are we not giving away NHS properties on long term leases, only to have them taken over by large building contractors. The contractors then revamp and modernise these properties and lease them back to the NHS for a massive profit? Which if I am correct, yet again proves the total betrayal of the electorate by Labour because it is a 'stealth' privatisation of the NHS. At least the Tories were honest about their privatisation

Makes a change, I remember when only Roland Bardsley was the only company "allowed" to build in Tameside.
According to the conditions of membership of (if that is the right expression) the WTO (World Trade Organisation) member countries are not "allowed" a free NHS. (Except at the most basic level like the USA, ie just enough to stop bodies rotting in the street).
Thus this assault on the NHS is not random, it is sanctioned at the highest level
