Tameside heroes and villians

Compare these two photographs taken today. The one below is of yet more illegal fly-tipping in Denton and the one above, also taken in Denton, is of Brian, a true local hero who come rain, hail or shine is to be found in the woods clearing up rubbish, unblocking drains and generally keeping the place nice for those who care about the woodland environment. He does all this without any kind of financial reward and it is worth adding that Brian is 81 years of age. Well done Brian - you are a true local hero!

Now think of the contrast when you look at the picture below and you think of the people responsible for this illegal tipping. I was thinking to myself of the thought process that leads to such actions. Here is one scenario: Eh up love, the new carpet and sofa is coming tomorrow, but what are we going to do with the ones we already have? We will have to chuck them out, where? In the street or the park where we usually dump rubbish of course.

He's public spirited. He's also a mug. This is the council's job.
It's like donating money to the RNLI or similar - worthy causes but the government currently gives over 12 thousand million pounds a year to foreign, often corrupt, countries, yet can't fund our lifeboats or numerous other essential BRITISH ORGANISATIONS.

They've slashed funding to the Prison Service for example, massively reduced staff numbers and got rid of most of the experienced officers who had decent pay and conditions. Their replacements work longer, have worse pay and conditions and are undermanned in an extremely difficult job. But there's a vast sum of spare (borrowed) money to pour into The Third World - while our own essential infrastructure crumbles.

He's a great man is Brian. He does guided walks through the woods telling the history of the Denton coalfield.

We had the pleasure of meeting Brian today, a remarkable gentleman of 81 years, whilst out walking our dog. He was out picking up rubbish along the riverside pathways that had been thoughtlessly discarded by individuals who obviously nave no regards for the beauty of that area. It would be easy to just say, well done Brian there should be more people like you, when actually we should be saying STOP DROPPING LITTER YOU THOUGHTLESS IDIOTS!

I agree Jane and if the insensensitive person who called him a mug had any idea how untidy this place would be without Brian they would be in for a shock.
