Conservationists have condemned plans that would allow buzzard nests to be destroyed and the birds of prey taken into captivity to protect pheasant shoots.
The Environment Department (Defra) is to spend up to £375,000 researching ways to keep buzzards from targeting captive-reared pheasants.
The RSPB said the idea of taking wild buzzards into captivity or destroying their nests was "totally unacceptable", and criticised Defra for spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on the project when money was tight for conservation measures.
In a document setting out plans for the research project, Defra said the 2011 National Gamekeepers Organisation survey found that three quarters of gamekeepers (76%) believed buzzards had a harmful effect on pheasant shoots.
Buzzards are thought to target pheasant release pens if they find there is a readily available source of food and the Government's conservation agency Natural England has received a number of requests to license the killing of the bird of prey, which is a protected species.
In one case it was claimed that 25% to 30% of young pheasants were lost to buzzards, making the shoot unsustainable.
Buzzards have seen numbers increase by 146% between 1995 and 2009, although the increase appears to have levelled off between 2009 and 2010, according to the British Breeding Bird Survey.

This is an issue which concerns me greatly. It just so happens I have been out filming local buzzards this afternoon (video below) and the thought of the authorities willfully destroying their nests makes me rage with anger. If the destruction was planned for legitimate reasons I would begrudgingly accept such a proposal but to destroy nests and imprison buzzards so Hooray Henries can take take to the moors and blast pheasants to death with shotguns is not a valid excuse in my opinion.
The Denton buzzards will be safe from this madness but the future of the Stalybridge buzzards will be perilous as their range does actually include a 'secret' pheasant breeding site hidden in the woods between Tintwistle and Crowden.
Should anyone spot anyone erecting the equipment needed to attack a buzzard nest, please do let me know as a matter of urgency.
While filming the buzzards today I also come across a Great Spotted Woodpecker ( I think so anyway? ) feeding chicks hidden in holes in a tree. The video can be viewed below.

Net migration to the UK is more than double the government's target of 100,000 a year according to new figures.
In the 12 months to last September net migration - the number arriving in the UK to stay for more than a year minus those leaving for good - was 252,000.
The figures from the Office For National Statistics show estimated long-term immigration to the UK in the year to September was 589,000, compared with 600,000 in the year to September 2010. Well that's one way of putting it Mr Hall. Another way of putting it is that the people of Mottram are not going to be dictated to by some upstart two towns away sticking his oar into their business.
It isn't just Mottram that is affected, it spans out into other areas too. Like for instance the horrendous daily rat run of HGVs along the narrow and winding Matley Lane in Hyde - a sight more hair-raising than anything encountered at the Denton interchange. That is how far and wide they are travelling to escape the congestion a bypass would ease.
I'm sorry but the Denton interchange wasn't constructed with a view to restricting future road building elsewhere in other towns within a several mile radius. If you thought it was then I'm afraid that was your error of judgement and no-one else's. That bypass is still years away, so if the prospect is so distressing to you then I have one simple piece of advice - sell up and move!
Like I've said - come clean as to how far and wide you consider yourself empowered to lecture people in other towns and boroughs on what roads they are allowed to build. Because in-so-doing you'll expose yourself to be the jumped-up interfering pain in the backside that you are.

I've visited Longdendale and I found it a wonderful break from the urban nightmare of my husk of an industrial town.
We can forget the overspill areas created by socialist meddling of course, but by and large I would say that Longdendale is the green jewel of an otherwise pretty rubbish borough.

If the trams, (which are fundamentally pointless as they'll only ever move a tiny fraction of the public, even at theoretical full capacity) can cause all this inconvenience and demolition why not a bypass/road improvement scheme that would significantly improve the lives of millions of road users a year and would provide a cosiderable boost for the local economy.

What you are effectively saying Mr Hall is that the development of the road network spanning a radius several miles from the centre of the universe (aka Denton) must now (for the first time in its history) stagnate indefinately. I frequently visit Denton, I know people who live in Denton, I worked in Denton until recently and my grandfather lived to a ripe old age in Denton. The insidious deadly miasma that has you in such a state seems to have passed me and everyone else I know by. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume the problems you relate are real. And I have to tell you that still doesn't change my view.
I'm afraid the answer to Denton's problems must ultimately lie in the design of Denton's road network, not in attempting to wreck road development all over the show outside of your own town. One feasible solution could be the reconstruction of the Denton Interchange. Whether that could take the form of a flyover from the M67 to the A57 and/or a slip road from the M60 to the M67 I couldn't possibly say (you know - not being myself an expert).
Anon@23.12, no, J Hall and Brenda are two different people but they do live fairly close to each other. One is a community champion and a tireless campaigner for good, the other is on the take via the public purse gravy train.
Between Two Points has the perfect solution. Instead of building a bypass, demolish everything on one side of the road starting at Hattersley roundabout and finishing where the Siege Committee envisage the bypass re-joining the A628. This way the road can be widened and the countryside can be preserved as the bypass will no longer be required. This will keep the Siege Committee happy too as they claim to want the bypass for the good of the region, so their small sacrifice shall be to the benefit of the region.

Perhaps so, but Hall's main gripe is that any easing of congestion in that area will encourage more traffic affecting him over in Denton. So his insane position is - Mottram better not ever dare to ease their congestion problems!
That is a good point but I have heard he has 24 lanes of motorway traffic on his doorstep so it is easy to see why he feels so strongly about the issue.
It's also quite easy to dismiss out of hand anything Hall has to say when he compares air pollution in Denton to Saddam Hussein's use of chemical weapons against the Kurds. Lets get down to basics and firstly what happens to the traffic at Denton with a flyover from the M67 to the A57.
Unbelievable and utter chaos,simply
because the A57 approaching Reddish Bridge becomes 2 lanes,then at the overhead rail bridge it becomes 1 lane as it carries on to Gorton.
So in a nutshell the M67 with its lanes of present queuing traffic then within a mile becomes 1 Lane.
Now that is fact to those who cannot think past where Motorway traffic ends up.Regardless of the insults from this poster such a scheme is absolutely bloody nuts.
The Highways Agency released its findings re the M67/M60/A57 i8nterchange clearly states nothing can done to assist this location which is one of the worst congested
areas in t5he region,those reports I already have numerous other official documents which always substantiate my postings.

No-one would disagree that traffic pollution call cause health problems. Experts can show that but we all live in a modern society and we have to accept that. With advancements in medical science we are all living longer. This is also a fact. And people living in the area where Mr Hall lives has a longer life expectancy than most despite living near a major motorway. This debate is about improving traffic flows through Longdendale and I don't live there but agree that Mr Hall should not condemn the people of Longdendale bacause he has a different agenda. He makes reference to NETA and yet Longdendale had nothing to do with NETA and never will but Mr Hall will throw it into the debate and make reference to some document that some other blog site may have found. He may make reference with others to adjustments to traffic lights and yet these are controlled by an Urban Traffic Unit and not TMBC. His theories are just that and are the opinions of one individual, who to be honest, resorts to offensive language for anyone who questions him. A very strange character.

Improve traffic flow at Denton by building that fly over to connect the M67 and M60 without the need for traffic lights. Less slowing down and less speeding up equals less pollution.
The M67 ramp is already mapped out and partially built.

Mr Hall is the undisputed winner in this debate. As he says; even if the bypass and flyover was built, all the traffic channelled down the A57 to Manchester would end up in the Reddish Lane/Hyde Road bottleneck which would mean traffic would still be queuing but this time on the motorway and proposed flyover.

Re the Reddish Lane/Hyde Rd bottleneck: Heading the other way (i.e. towards Denton) the lunatics in power have installed a cycle lane to CREATE congestion. At first it was signed for drivers to use when no cyclists were there. Then it was changed to a cycle lane with a broken line which means it can only be used when absolutely necessary.
The vast majority of drivers (i.e the ones with brains) simply ignore the cycle lane and drive in it as there is clearly enough width for two cars.

What will it prove? And then what can be done about it? Anyone concerned about large scale destruction of our remaining local countryside should go to the surrounding high ground above Mottram to see the scale and extent of the rural devastation that is being promoted by the pro-bypass lobby.
The problems are congestion, pollution and noise from stationary and accelerating traffic. The best solution would be to widen the existing road and demolish a few hundred properties with a generous compensation scheme for those affected.

Hands up who believes the propaganda of Tameside MBC & Longdendale Siege Committee that the Longdendale Bypass is meant to relieve the three villages of congestion? If there are any that read this weblog, then this post may make you think again. For those who already suspect it is lies, here is the evidence that seems to have lain buried, until now.
Readers of local newspapers may be familiar with one David Moore. A person of that name used to regularly write in to advocate pro bypass views, as well as launch vitriolic attacks on anti-bypass campaigners (to be fair, we could be said to be the 'anti David Moore' in that respect, as it's our style too). Some examples are here and here (notice the classic Chronicle/Daily Mail/Fascist headline for the latter - 'Minority views are not valid'). We're not sure whether or not he had any direct affiliation with the Longdendale Siege Committee, but given his views and willingness to write to the newspapers (and regularly get published) we'd be surprised if he didn't. The fact that he lives in Hollingworth makes it seem highly unlikely that he is a stranger to them.
But what can be revealed with certainty is that someone called David Moore (with the fizzog displayed above) used to work for Tameside MBC. His contact details are on this page of this website. Go on, take some time to read what the website is about.
Yes, he was the Project Manager for the North European Trade Axis (NETA), an organisation seemingly run by TMBC from their offices. He also clearly has affiliations with the North West Regional Assembly, given the alternate email address on the contact page.
So what is NETA about? Lots of things, full of awful public language, the new bourgeois coded speech. But looking at the website and the conference reports, there talk of Transpennine Corridors, and 'management of M62 traffic flows'. But next to David Moore's face on the 'welcome' page is this more intelligible blurb:
"The NETA project seeks to develop and promote a West-East Eurocorridor extending from Northern and Southern Ireland across the Irish Sea to the Transpennine Corridor of Northern England and thence via the Humber ports and North Sea to the Netherlands, North Germany, Poland and beyond"
Given that TMBC are the facilitators of this project, we can now clearly link them with a project to develop their leg of a 'braided' (their terminology) trans-european transport network: in this context 'management of M62 traffic flows' can only mean one thing - diversion of key (trade) traffic elsewhere. Clearly, leaving the M1 to avoid the M62 and thereby accessing the M60 to head to the Western ports for Ireland and vice versa.
So tell me all knowing Anon, why should TMBC be the nominated NETA administrator with its own office in TMBC Ashton Offices.
How strange that TMBC want the ByPass specifically for the three villages under seige when behind closed doors its organising meetings with scores of European

If you're that considered about Denton's air quality sweetheart then the best option would be leave Denton entirely. Because make no mistake about it a minor bypass two towns away really is not going to amount to the difference between Auschwitz and the Swiss Alps.

What is needed by the Government & TMBC is a Bypass to create an 'M62 mark 2' linking all these locations which include the M67/M60/M6/M5/M56 on what is called in Tameside Council's Documents the "West-East Eurocorridor" from Northern and Southern Ireland across the Irish Sea to the "Transpennine Corridor of Northen England" named NETA (North European Trade Axis) in Government and TMBC circles. A bypass would have a number of positive effects, including improving safety on one of the most dangerous roads in the country. And the fact that it would relieve one of the worst vehicle bottlenecks in the country.
What we must always bear in mind is that no significant piece of road is ever constructed in the UK without the usual motley crew of nay-sayers.

actually the case for a bypass was being made decades ago, long before new labour's mass immigration social engineering scheme kicked in. So don't come that.
also - arguing against a bypass because congestion "is everywhere" is a bit like arguing against a speed camera in a speeding hotspot because "speeding is everywhere". From foreigners, to a few beech trees, to an irrelevant interchange in a different town, to grand conspiracy theories, it's plainly obvious the anti-bypass brigade will attempt to throw in everything but the kitchen sink to justify their boo-hooing.

So why for decades has an A628 weight restriction not be tried for a 6 month period,because its been refused time after time which is very very fishy.
Many of us here in Longendale do not want a ByPass,we are not stupid because yes there is a hidden agenda linked and we know who is behind it.
There has never been for decades a case made for a bypass,because each time the issue has been raised
the evidence has been thrown out as it happened again recently.
Millions and millions and millions of pounds has been spent of Tax Payers money on a wasted case,and here we go again.
In fact you could pay everyone in Longendale a cash sum which could buy them somnewhere else and it still would not come to the amount of money already wasted over years

Do bear in mind that we recently had 13 years of strong Labour government that splashed out money left right and centre like none before or since. All the while TMBC was under strong Labour control, capable of pulling more than a few strings (Roy Oldham was one staunch bypass advocate). So do forgive me, but this icke-esque pro-bypass 'hidden agenda' has had ample time and chance to come to fruition, and its total failure on that score can only be attributed to another agenda by the antis.
Perhaps it is high time that the speculation, theories, fingerpointing, accusations, busybody interference from outside individuals who do not even reside in Mottram was put to bed by a real resolution being sought. That being the people whose sole business it is (namely the residents of Mottram / Longdendale) being given the full facts both for and against, and then comprehensively surveyed so we can all have done with it. Either those many thousands of daily HGVs are to continue through that village and horrendous bottleneck or they are to bypass it. Simple.

If that route is solid with static vehicles what the hell are all the speed signs,flashing speed indicators for along Mottram Moor.

I'm pretty sure that even with a 300M bypass, Mottram will have had little different out of the public pot than Denton for the building of roads, and let's not forget the amount of public money Denton had to turn itself into speedbump central.
Perhaps Johnboy Hall should draft some sort of contract, where from now on all future road building plans for Denton and its people will have to be approved by everyone residing in towns up to several miles away from Denton. Then (and only then!) should he consider himself qualified to lecture other people in other towns on what roads they are allowed to build.

The traffic volume in Denton did not jump dramatically in the space of a year or two from sleepy village status to spaghetti junction mark two. You've had ample time to upsticks and move, and you pensioners are never without a bob or two.
