Say no to AV poster in Hyde

I come across this eye-catching poster in Hyde today and thought it may be of interest to contributors to this blog. The colours and design leads me to suspect UKIP may be involved but when I took a look at the no2av website I noticed the Conservative Mayor of London - Boris Johnson seems to be involved - so I really don’t know who is behind the ‘Vote No’ campaign.

I must confess to knowing very little about the proposed electoral changes which are planned. My understanding is that true proportional representation as used in the European Elections is out of the question (due to the fact potentially controversial minor parties can make big breakthroughs?) and the proposed alternative vote system is some kind of compromise between true proportional representation and the current system of first past the post.

After looking at the no2av website I am currently inclined to vote no when the referendum is held on May 5th. I do not like the sound of ‘President Nick Clegg’ or some equally obnoxious Lib Dem being given a mandate to rule even though the majority of the electorate are opposed to his policies.

Does anyone have a convincing argument as to why I and the millions of other people who don’t really understand the proposed changes should vote yes?

AV is an old fashioned, very unrepresentative system only used by three countries, Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
One of the best systems is List Proportional Representation (List PR).
Each party or grouping presents a list of candidates for a multi-member electoral district, the voters vote for a party, and parties receive seats in proportion to their overall share of the vote. So if a party received 10% of the vote they would receive 10% of the seats in the legislature.
No system is perfect but List PR is fair and representative, utterly unlike the abomination of our current first past the post system and the only slightly less atrocious AV, to which I will be voting no in the hope we'll keep our current system and it will become untenable and we'll be offered a PROPER form of PR like List PR which currently operates in 69 countries.

I think you're being a bit modest TC and probably understand PR quite well. Nowadays this isn't the case (for this and a whole host of other important issues) for a massive and rapidly increasing proportion of Britain's chronically dumbed down and apathetic electorate.

Here is the most important point: whether we have the AV, PR or first past the post system, millions of third world people are still going to be entering this country; so in the end, what difference will it make?

I urge all our readers to click on the blue link above.

Exactly Chris, what difference will it make whether we have AV or PR or whatever? The country will still continue to slide downhill.

My question is: What can local UKIP offer to the voters?
John Cooke can't even be bothered to get of his Fat A*** and campaign when he stands in elections.
'Say no to AV poster in Hyde' big deal.
They've got loads of money from rich Tory backers coming in.
UKIP are known in Tameside, for having a child molester candidate.

UKIP in Tameside, are mainly known for paper candidates and having a child molester for a candidate.
A great deal to offer voters, not.

They'll never bring in List PR because they've got things sewn up to suit them.
With the proposed 600 seats UKIP and the BNP would have at least 4% of the vote each giving them a combined 50 seats and consequently a lot of influence.
The likelihood is if people voting KNEW every single vote counted (as it would under ListPR) the overall turout would rise significantly and ALL the smaller parties would benefit proportionately far more.
With massive national discontent about immigration in particular nationalist parties would benefit most. A combined 20% of the vote giving 120 seats is not an unreasonable estimate.

UKIP, with all those candidates appearing out of the blue at last year's council elections. I wonder how that happened.

I want to know from Mr John Cooke. Why does he point the finger of judgement at the BNP?
When his own leading candidate (Paul Kidd) was a child molester?

speaking of child molesters and pornographers.
Is it true that leading lights of the EDL are child molesters with good connections here in Tameside. And, is it true that regional organisers of the BNP with fabulous connections in Tameside are pornographers specialising in granny porn?

Labour - Councillor - Jailed Child Pornography said...

I'm not in the EDL.
But.
I know from being an ex member of the Labour, that it's full of child molesters.

A former mayor escaped jail today after being convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Stewart Brown, 60, admitted 21 offences of possessing indecent images of children and one of distributing pictures.

At Leeds Crown Court today he was given a nine-month prison sentence which was suspended for two years.

In 2006 he was mayor of Hebden Royd in West Yorkshire and was also a Labour councillor on Calderdale Council, the court heard.

At a hearing in July, Brown, of Nutclough, Hebden Bridge, admitted all the charges, some of which were said to relate to images of girls as young as three.

You see that list of Labour child molesters.
And how do you not know. you maybe voting for a Labour beast?

Just something to think about.
Oh! yes, we know how these Labour/UAF types don't want you to see all those Labour child molesters.

Last night's by-election in Barnsley Central is of great interest as the full result is analysed carefully. I will attempt to do so by listing each party's performance in turn:-

Labour
As expected Labour romped home, in what has always been a safe seat for them. The electorate of course is very fickle and has forgotten the legacy of the last administration and its responsibility for much of the mess the country is now in. Those who voted Labour last night were a mix of the party diehards, ideologically motivated socialists and people worried about and opposing the cuts that will affect them and their community. A satisfactory result for Labour

UKIP
An excellent, if not outstanding result for UKIP, and shows that a lack of manpower on the ground can also be countered by use of resources such as their billboards campaign and choice of candidate who was well briefed, personable and came across very well. Most of UKIP's voters will have been Tories protesting against the coalition government thus sending a warning shot across David Cameron's bows, but UKIP's ability to harbour this support, should both worry the Tories and give great hope to the broader anti-EU movement..

Tories
Never likely to do well here, but party strategists will be deeply concerned at the inroads made by UKIP at their expense. A big drop in their percentage vote mirrored by UKIP's rise.

BNP
Considering the turmoil in the party, not the dire result some expected in the circumstances to only drop from 8.9% to 6%, importantly saving their deposit. Nevertheless in what are ideal conditions the party should have broken through here as UKIP did. This also mirrors the stagnation, poor strategy and overall lacklustre performance in ostensibly ideal conditions for a radical nationalist party.

Independent
For an uknown independent to come from nowhere to garner 4.7% of the vote nearly saving his deposit was a very good effort, again showing the discontent (finally!) starting to grow for the old gang parties.

Liberal Democrat
A truly appalling result, showing just how much the LibDems miscalculated on entering the coalition. If I was Nick Clegg this morning I would be even more concerned than Nick Griffin! LibDem voters would have switched to Labour or possibly the Independent.

Overall
In the light of the current economic climate, Labour has affirmed its position as the main repository of opposition to the cuts and the current government. However, the combined vote of the three anti-EU parties UKIP/BNP and the EDP of well over 20% gives a positive message that finally the people are moving towards desiring real change and starting to see alternatives to the old gang parties. One can only wonder how this percentage could have been improved if the BNP, in what should be ideal territory, had shifted enough ex-Labour voters or those that didn't bother to vote at all into their camp. This is entirely down to the much documented unprofessionalism and faux pas on this forum and elsewhere. A case of "what could have been, but more importantly, what still could be". UKIP's excellent night shows that the voters will give an alternative party a large level of support in certain circumstances, and this very important factor remains one for the nationalist movement to consider. It has to release the baggage of extremist sentiments, past associations and too often a gutter level persona to move into the possible realms of success and impact on events. That is the challenge ahead. There is no time for dinosaurs or sentimentality, but there is for a driving force of electable, rational and professional nationalists to seize the opportunity like the reinvigorated Front National is doing in France. Can they rise to the challenge?

Labour's average result (1987 - 2005) in Barnsley, i.e before Illsley the sitting Labour MP was under suspicion and finally convicted for stealing his expenses, was 69%. So in the midst of the massive Tory cuts they got a well below average percentage. They couldn't even get their vote out - in 1992 and 1997, 27000 and 28000 respectively voted Labour.
Red Ed and his shambolic, tainted no-talent shadow cabinet had to rely on public ignorance, apathy and the residue of cretins, spongers and those who would vote for anything wearing a red rosette but couldn't explain why.
Well done to UKIP though on a very good result that will have surprised many.

Media indoctrinated votes from people who have very, very short memory spans.

If the voters new the reality of the situation and voted like such they'd make voting illegal.

If Home Counties type Tory voters ever give up self worship and start giving a shit about the country they might realize that Cameron isn't a Tory and start voting UKIP.
To be fair, enough of them did just that and deprived the Tories of at least thirty seats. As a result however we're saddled with the dreadful coalition whose only virtue is they aren't Labour.

ukip said...

The 'No to AV' posters are nothing to do with UKIP. We as a party actually support the yes side. Not because it is a good system, it's not. A no vote will allow the failed old parties to shut down debate on voting reform for another twenty years. A win for the yes camp will allow debate to continue on the merits of AV+ or PR.
I am suprised at TC for allowing the smears about Paul Kidd to remain on here. As I have said on previous occasions, If you cannot trust a royal Butler who do you trust? All parties have been afflicted by similar issues in the past.
