Tameside Reporter article on the Dorothy Catrwright defection

I must say the excuses given by Cllr Cartwright’s for defecting to Labour are extremely weak. She should have done the honourable thing and stepped down to force a by-election in which the electorate would then be given the opportunity to show of their approval or disapproval of her change of party allegiance. So Tameside Citizen has made it into the pages of the local press. Nice one! It shows that there is a role in Tameside for critical writing and journalism which does not toe the Liebour line.

For the record there is no obligation to resign your seat if you change parties, it being assumed that the electorate vote for the person and not the party. In fact I can remember when ballot forms did not carry the party affilliation of candidates, so strong was this policy of "candidate not party".

If I also recall correctly, I think that during General Elections the local Conservative Association used to dissolve itself so that strictly speaking it was not responcilbe for any campaigning, only the named individuals such as agent and candidate were.

"I was surprised I got in", astonished more like. So was everyone but no-one more than Messrs Ballagher, the Labour incumbent at that time, and John Bell the Tameside Tories leader of one of the worst Conservative groups in Britain.

“People don’t always vote for their politics, they vote for the person and I know lots of Labour people voted for me because I knew them.
Dorothy Cartwright.

Only a tiny percentage of the electorate vote for the candidate irrespective of party. This woman is deluded if she thinks she won her seat because SHE was the candidate.

The reason she managed to get elected was because the BNP's candidate, Jeff Clayton, took 300+ votes from Labour - allowing the Tory candidate to crawl to victory.

Ballagher wasnt the labour incumbent. That's an urban myth put about by the mentally challenged

Concerned Bloke said...

What is done is done. The only real debate is whether Labour will select her to stand when her 'Tory' term ends.

How many people voted for 'her' rather than the 'party' will be irrelevant if Labour don't select her.

Hoorah, Tony is back. One of the best posters on this blog.

Blue rinse said...

Ballagher WAS the Labour incumbent and his loser's speech was a long rant about the BNP because they'd cost him the seat.
Cartwright, 'had no choice', translation: 'I'm incapable of accepting responsibility for my actions.' With that attitude she should soar up the Labour ranks, remember Gordon 'not me guv' Brown and the rest of them who spent Britain up to the brink of the financial abyss but are totally incapable of accepting responsibility for it or apologising.

Ballagher WAS NOT the incumbant. Do your research properly or shut up. Saying he WAS in capitals doesn't change basic facts that he wasn't. Now go and check your facts, typical BNP, don't let the facts spoil a good story

Ballagher was the candidate not the incumbent councillor. Charlie Meredith was up for re-election and retired.

Nonetheless, this was a target ward for the Tories following the 2003 election when they came within 130 votes of winning it. They would have won it in 2007 had it not been for the UKIP paedophile. They would have won it in 2010 had it not been for the General Election dragging out all the Labour dregs to vote to keep their benefits.

Just look at Cartwright in the photo. She can't look her constituents in the eyes.

She knows jack said...

What is Cartwright talking about?!It's been Labour for 49 years? My arse! StalyDuk ward was only created in 1980! Prior to that, if she knows the place so ruddy well then she should remember Tory Ross Kirk, who was also Mayor of Dukinfield for a time.

Also, the Tories were just 30+ votes short in 2006.

The woman is clearly a political buffoon.

Dear "Waterloo ward" thanks for the comment.

Anonymous@13.00. what makes you think the poster you disagree with is BNP?

For the record Mike Ballagher was not the incumbent. (Incumbent = person in position ie sitting councillor) He was the candidate but not incumbent. He WAS, however, a former councillor in tameside

Pat Jones said...

No matter all the same, a few Tories still nationalist in their thinking. But all the same Lib/Lab/Con.

Blue rinse said...

Labour mentalist, sorry you're right, the retiring Labour incumbent was Meredith, but Ballagher's losing speech WAS pathetic and Cartwright was clearly amazed to win.

the man in the white coat said...

Jones - I don't need you to authenticate the facts. you are not sharing enlightenment with your "for the record" comment. Its actually quite funny that you assume the position of the "all knowledgeable one". You've had that opportunity to correct this on here for months yet haven't corrected your knuckle dragging mates.

and why do I assume its a BNP poster? cause its your knuckle dragging mates that have been going on and on about this for months. The village idiot being the main culprit.

Cllr Cartwright might not feel that she is 'political' but unfortunately for her the electorate of Dukinfield/Stalybridge elected a 'Conservative'. To defect to a wildly different party and then refuse to democratically mandate that defection smacks of opportunism.

Well said Tom. I'm no Tory but it's nice to see a young person getting involved.

Tom, Cartwright smacks of desperation.

look here you inbred tosers. Dorothey won but we let her win because i was to busy to take up the role as councillor because of work comitments. I did not lose...we let her win and we already knew she would come across to us as she has proven.Well done Dorothey.

She's already gossiping and backstabbing. This is a Christmas present Quinn will wish he never got.

aluman, it's because it's a high profile election and UAF, AKA Friends of Labour might draw a bit of the spotlight. Which is the last thing you want to do if you crawled out from under a stone.

She's a ruddy nightmare. It's impossible to get a straight answer out of her, and she talks as if she's away with the fairies. We can't wait to select Ky for 2012.

What's the difference between a woman's period and a TMBC black bin collection? Nothing, they both happen once a month.

Funny isn't it, an area nearly the size of western Europe is underwater, the good hard working people have lost everything, including lives! but no disaster appeal on the TV or anywhere else for our cousins down under! Its always a different story for any brown skinned country.

World faces overpopulation 'disaster' as number of people is set to rise by 75 million EACH YEAR . White people now account for less than 8% of the global population. The yellow, brown and black peoples are growing in number at unbelievable rates as all white countries are collapsing under waves of immigration.

The media clamour to send aid to Haiti was overwhelming.
The media clamour to send aid to Pakistan was overwhelming
The media clamour to send aid to Queensland is...nil.

The difference in attitudes from sufferers of natural disasters is remarkable; "Gimmee, gimmee, gimmee" combined with looting and atrocities from Haiti, Pakistan and New Orleans after Katrina. I'll make an exception of Indonesians after the tsunami, I believe they behaved very well. Can you think of one disaster though, where white people didn't react with stoic, even cheerful, resignation, get stuck in, help each other, and not stand there bawling out their demands to the world on telly?

I do feel huge sympathy for all caught up in one of these disasters and wish them well. But when I see people shouting and snarling that the world owes them, whilst standing around doing nothing to help themselves, then my sympathy evaporates and sorry, but I won't send any money.

There are Appeals for Queensland; the Premier of the state has set one up, but I think it's only for Aussies. Chatswood Mall near Sydney (I used to work there!) is receiving donations in person and by post. And the Salvation Army is taking online donations - you can specifically designate the Australian Flood Disaster and they'll honour that. I've sent my donation to them, hope others will too.
Over $30 million has been raised so far for poor Queensland. I think it should be far more, considering what other countries get. Britons have behaved in a splendid manner when faced with all the flood disasters we've had; Queenslanders are doing the same. That breaks my heart, it's like the Blitz Spirit, and that's what opens my purse.

tonydj said...

Well said Croc Dundee.

At the time of the terrible bush-fires near Sydney I sent a donation via the Aussie Red Cross.

It got there and I received an acknowledgement. They are not collecting for this disaster because there is already a fund set up by the Queensland premier, contactable HERE;-

I have an idea, but I'll keep it to myself.
