Cllr Dorothy Cartwright defects to Labour

Tamesides Labour group has been handed an early Christmas present with the news that Dukinfield/Stalybridge Conservative Councillor Dorothy Cartwright has joined their ranks.

This means Labour have all three councillors representing the Dukinfield/Stalybridge ward, increasing their seats on the council to 47 while reducing the Conservatives to eight. A move welcomed by fellow ward members David Sweeton and Eileen Shorrock.

In a written press statement, Cllr Cartwright said: The decision to leave the Conservative Party was taken after a lot of soul searching. All I have ever wanted was to fully represent the residents in my ward, however this has been made impossible by the actions of the Tameside Tories. I feel I have been stifled by continual back biting and bullying from the local Conservatives."

"There is a lot going on at the moment especially considering the impact in Tameside of the recent council settlement and I feel that the best way I can continue to represent the people of Stalybridge and Dukinfield is to join the Tameside Labour group. I have always worked closely with the Stalybridge and Dukinfield Labour councillors on the District Assembly and very much look forward to working even closer with them in the future as a member of the Labour team.

Executive Leader of the council and Labour group leader, Cllr Kieran Quinn said: Firstly can I welcome Dorothy to Tameside Labour. We have one of the strongest local Government groups and Dorothys decision to join us has made us even stronger.

It seems obvious to me that all is not well with the local Tories and we are starting to see cracks developing over how this government is handling the economic downturn.

The effects of their policy to cut 100Million pounds from our budget which will affect local services is creating tensions within the main opposition as more and more of their members begin to realise just how much of an impact it is going to have on our borough. It makes a mockery of a recent Tameside Conservative press release which claimed we had got off lightly with our enforced cuts and that their impact wouldnt be as bad as we were making out. Its now clear that the local Tories, somewhat embarrassingly, didnt agree with their leaders statement.

Speaking to Tameside Radio, Councillor John Bell, Leader of Tameside Conservatives said I am not surprised that Dorothy has left the Conservative Group, as she knows, we were about to commence our disciplinary processes following the concerns of fellow members about her input. This was a matter for the Conservative Group to deal with and I think she has jumped before being pushed. Tameside Radio

I must admit to having little time for back stabbers. I think Mrs Cartwright should resign her seat and let the electorate decide if they approve of her treachery in a by-election. Tameside Citizen

Lets hope that she can keep the high standards, now set by the Labour leadership here in tameside.

For Quinn to imply this has anything to do with National politics is an absolute joke.

I'm sure Cameron is quaking in his hand made brogues. "Tameside, where the f*uk is Tameside?"

Quinn has illusions of grandeur.

I think it is quite generous of the Tories to 'do their bit' to try to improve the diabolical standards of the existing Labour crowd!

I voted for her in 2008 and have written to her to say what I think of her appalling, disloyal bahaviour. She has cheated everyone who voted for her in good faith.
You are right TC, a by-election should be mandatory in cases like this.

Fuel Watch: Diesel, 128.9 = £5.85 per gallon, £4.02 is tax. This is legalised theft.
In the New Year VAT goes up 2.5% to 20% putting approximately 22p per gallon on the price, (as there is also VAT on Fuel Duty, i.e a tax on a tax) so approximately £6.07 per gallon.
The only thing that would stop and reverse this is mass protests by hauliers and other groups, like those in September 2000 when the Labour government totally bottled it and backed down on more proposed price increases. It needs all road users to get involved this time before ordinary people are priced off the road. For a start write to your MP. It's the same as everything else, if enough people act something will be done.

Spot on James. I have a super fuel efficient Audi. It is supposed to be so good on fuel the road tax is only £35 per year but guess what; it costs me as much to run as did my old 4x4 due to ever increasing fuel prices.

I also think she should step down as people voted for a Conservative candidate.

I find it disturbing that Dorothy Cartwright chose Christmas Eve to announce her defection, considering she is supposed to be such a good Christian. She has always been an opportunist and using the eve of Chritianity's most glorious celebration smacks of opportunism of the highest order. It seems her and the bedraggled Labour lot will be well suited.

I bet the Tories are cock-a-hoop at being rid of this 'me, me' chancer.

I'm not sure how this works legally. The electorate voted for her as 'the official Conservative party candidate' and when she won, it was announced as such. I'm not sure how much help she was given by the local Tories, but however much is was, it was still greater than zero.

It is a bit presumptuous of her therefore to just take her position and hand it to Labour. It will be interesting (even of there isn't a by-election) to see if she is backed by Labour. I'm sure they already had someone hoping to be selected to fight her in 2012.

She was a paper candidate. We did not think she would win but the first time intervention of Geoff Clayton took enough votes off Labour's Michael Ballagher to let Dorothy win by default. If we thought the ward was winnable we would have selected a better candidate like Stacey.

Anonymous said...

Labour should have easily retained Duki/Staly in 2008 but Ballagher was the sitting Labour councillor and had rubbed too many people up the wrong way.
How low do Tameside Tories have to sink before Bell gets the bullet? They must be one of the worst Conservative groups in the country.

Turncoat Caretwright said, "I feel I have been stifled by continual back biting and bullying from the local Conservatives."

This plainly dishonest woman was the very one responsible for the backbiting and bullying, ignoring her Tory colleagues and choosing to work with Labour councillors from day one as a councillor. She was so high up Shorrock and Sweeton's arses it was embarrassing. She was always right when she was plainly wrong, and whenever she spoke it was in the vaguest of terms that those listening to her found difficult to understand. She made things up on the hoof, and never campaigned or took part in any activism. In 18months as a councillor she distributed just ONE newsletter. A pathetic record that stands as testament of her lack of commitment to residents.

Her one supposed glory moment, the public meeting that stopped the expansion of Tesco in Stalybridge, had to be rearranged because Cartwright had made such a mess of the original arrangements. In the end it was an outstanding success because her Tory colleagues sorted out her mess and effectively sidelined her on the matter because she had proved a liability.

Her defection is truly great news for the Tory Group. She was originally only a candidate in StalyDuk because the Tories' original candidate had to pull out due to ill health, after all the hard work had been done. Cartwright merely sauntered in and took the glory. The Tories despised her so much that none went to the count to support her. Not even her own husband could be bothered to go.

'Turncoat' Cartwright's defection now means there will be no protracted expulsion. She's gone. Good riddance. Nobody likes a turncoat, and Cartwright has just sealed her own fate in 18 months time.

There was always a collective groan when she entered meetings, now all there will be will be the sound of cheering from the Tory ranks.

Labour shouldn't gloat, they really don't know what they have got themselves into. The woman is a real pain in the arse. She'll never be out of Quinn's office now. Poor bastard.

Shows the vast difference in two leaders.
Quinn thinks it's a christmas gift having Dorothy and will soon find out she is only interested in one party THE DOROTHY PARTY.
On the other hand and it was well known that Roy Oldham couldn't stand TURN COATES.
His description of people that changed political parties, said they could never be trusted and would not accept them.

These jabbering savages remind me of the footage I used to see of various tribes jogging along in pre-1994 South Africa, carrying short spears and whooping at the intrusion into their range by rivals. I'm not even shocked that this is occurring in the capital of a major Northern Hemisphere country, though the apparent indifference of those around them, and the presence of seemingly imperturbable Whites in such zones makes me wonder what sort of superficially-sophisticated people are drawn to such gratuitously-plural zones. No amount of vibrant night life would keep me in such a place without an organised self-aware group to belong to and defend against these aliens.

When you changs Political parties it is normally because you disagree with the party you normally vote for or another party offers policies to your liking. Cartwright hasn't got a political thought in her head( there is not much there at all to be honest)she hasn't given one political reason for defecting to Labour, which goes to show it is for her own reasons she has defected.
Cartwright would do well to remember who paid for all her election expenses and how much she still owes the party. All Tory Cllrs pay £20.00 a month towards election expenses, she has not paid a penny for 18 months.

Ed Miliband's poll ratings after 100 days in the job are at record lows with the public, on a par with Iain Duncan Smith's for the Tories from a few years ago.
The shadow cabinet is a pathetic bunch of same old same old cranks, failures and incompetents clinging on to their status as 'the opposition'. They're utterly unelectable and no individual or organisation remotely successful or ambitious who COULD start to galvanise them wants anything to do with what are obviously a clapped out ragbag of no-talents and losers.

Come to think of it, London Mayor Boris Johnson is more like a functioning opposition than Labour, albeit one that pushes the globalist neo-liberal agenda more explicitly than most of his party do.

KTR said...

8.6 million still voted Labour in 2010, down a massive 5 million on Blair's 1997 victory. Many of the former were people with their own agendas of political correctness, anti-Tory, anti-Britain (or anti nation state in general), some brainless diehard Labourites. A lot were 'new Britons', foreigners, many from Commonwealth countries disgracefully allowed to vote despite often having only just arrived and knowing or caring nothing about our country. Some of these hate us and our land and culture bitterly, and yet are still allowed to vote. The numbers of these latter are increasing exponentially and already swing many seats in favour of Labour in particular as it is a large and often crucial block vote. Low turnout from the indigenous people aids this. Labour have 185 English seats out of 532. A modest estimate of at least 50 were won by 'collecting' the votes of certain cultural groups, utterly corrupt postal votes and mass irregularities on the electoral roll were vital in this process.
After its near destruction when losing for the fourth consecutive time in 1992, Labour became an organisation that would do anything to regain power including selling its core principles to the conman Blair and selling its country to anyone who would vote for it.
